Stevie put his foot down, asserted himself as a serious artist and broke away from the Motown sound, which had dominated the pop charts throughout the 60's. Many child stars struggle to find their footing as they mature. Stevie didn't miss a beat. To this day the cat sounds incredible. His talent that can not be measured.

Motown brought out a lot of great talented artists. Berry Gordon needed convincing at times, but he eventually let those truly talented artists do them, and got out of their way. Some of Stevie's most innovative albums were put out on Motown records.

I will always regret not going to see that tour. I had only really listened to Stevie's radio hits at that time. A couple years ago I realized that I had Songs In The Key Of Life in my vinyl collection, and I became obsessed. I must have grabbed that record at some point and never spun it. Pretty much every track is terrific.

Exactly. I went to the same concert in SF during 1972. I was so giddy and excited to see the Stones, but Stevie absolutely blew them out of the water. His set was so joyous and musical, while the Stones performed a cold perfunctory 45 minute set. After that concert I never bought or intentionally listened to a Rolling Stones album again, but I wore out the grooves of every Stevie Wonder album I could get my hands on.

Pure brilliance! Play the jam at the end (ooh la la la la la) back to back with Sly Stone's Thank you for talking to me Africa. Same groove and guitar rif. Not sure if Stevie or Sly did it first but I can listen to both all day
