  • TLDR Tui says that dragons rapidly mature until they become an adult at the age of seven. However, even that appears to not be true in the wacky world of Wings of Fire, as I will go over in this analysis video.

And about mink and anemone. Anemone was nearly stitched to her mother since the monent she hatched, she was on every governmental meeting with the queen and all of that important dragons discussing important things, she had to behave, she was taught manners. She was the only heir at the moment and, as i remember, she taken some classes about political stuff. And she surely never had friends and probably never played with anyone but her mother at really young age. Meanwhile, mink was just a dragonet. Princess, but never-to-be queen. So she having her normal dragonet life by this day, she has friends (polar bear), she's playing, and just have no real responsibilities. And the same things can be said about clearsight. She was always at her room, no friends, no society, but she'd *already* seen the life, just how it is, just how it works, how terrible things might happen, how can you be childish with that? I mean, this is just the same things happening in our world, some of my friends really responsible and serious at their 15, thinking about their future and working hard, while my main goal for now is to collect cool charms for my friendship bracelet and i'm 22. This is just depends solely from the life that surrounds us, some people just have to grew up early and some doesn't need too

This. Anemone and Clearsight big had anything but normal childhoods, and were forced by their respective circumstances to grow up way too fast, leading to their seeming maturity at such a young age (as well as their other issues, which, at least in Anemone's case, are made abundantly clear once she reenters the story in Book 6.

But there’s one thing you’re leaving out: the possibility that different tribes age at different rates. It’s entirely possible that tribes age as differently as they look, and tribes like ice wings mentally age slower, and rain wings mentally age faster, but their lifestyle left them stunted in some regards, but glory was not raised like that, so she mentally ages faster than everyone else. It’s entirely possible.
Edit: I just realized that this would make sense with how rain wings and ice wings would have lived when they evolved long ago. Rain wings would have to mentally be more prepared because their environment likely has many dangers, and other rain wings seem to not have as many parental instincts, making it so that rain wings would have to be more alert at a young age because they would have many predators and would not have parents watching their every move and keeping them safe.
Ice wings on the other hand live in an ordered society and have harsh environmental conditions, so it is likely that the dragonets would stay inside under the watch of their parents for many years. They would end up staying inside caves or other buildings for a majority of their time, so they would not have opportunities to learn to hunt and survive outside, so they would likely spend most of their young years sleeping and resting, with no need to develop mentally until much later. ( there are probably other tribes that have good reasons to mentally age differently, but ice wings and rain wings are just good examples and need to most explaining)

For me personally dragons age phsically fast between those ages as stated by Tui BUT mentally can age slower or faster then other dragons, also if 3 is teenage hood and 8 adulthood then, dragons spend more time in adulthood and teenhood then childhood this can possibly effect (some of) them mentally as they try and find themselves in the world, like what most human teens do. Also, Anemone was being trained to be Queen since she hatched effecting her greatly making her act more like an adult which she has always been surrounded by and being able to see the outside world but always being watched by her mother with some freedom every now and then, while the dragonets of destiny acted like teens until after the war because of the little freedom they've always had living under a rock all the time not really knowign how the world worked expect for what they were told by the adults.

I always figured Darkstalker's bracer was something akin to wrapped wire.
Essentially rather than being a solid piece, it 'unraveled' in part but didn't slip off because of this.
I would say I think Clearsight is a special case. She is a dragon who, quite literally, has experienced entire lifetimes. Her maturity is rather broken as a consequence, as she can quite literally see the effects her actions have on the future. Makes a bit of a more cautious and careful in a very long-term view fare.
This said, Anemone still causes issues, as you say. Especially as she's likely even more insulated and babied than Mink was.

    • @theriveracis5172
      @theriveracis5172 Год назад

For myself, as a general rule, I don't really fuss about dragon ages.
They have a radically different culture and biology to humans, and so I don't think it's applicable, by large.
Though I tend to also assume dragons live far longer than it's suggested, with the 'average' being brought heavily down by outside factors, namely draconic lifestyles and violent natures.
Way I tend to look at it, dragons catapult into maturity, but will slow to a crawl after. It's why Deathbringer never really bothered me, for example.
I'm much more inclined to go by the characters and how they act, than the ascribed number and what we assume to be the case from them. Glory's had the relationship pretty firmly in her control from the start, and if anything's to be problematic there, it's the fact she's his queen as far as I see it.
I'd have issues with, as an example here, Mink dating Anemone, or Kinkajou, despite their ages being far closer, and that's primarily due to the maturity they exhibit.
Mink is distinctively shown to act, think, and generally be, a child. Kinkajou, while young and immature to an extent, certainly is not on that level. Anemone is rather past either of them, and seems more comparable to Tsunami during the first series, than a super young child.
As another said; There's also question of if cultures of the tribes, their raising of their dragonets, and the biologies between them, have anything to do with it all.
Icewing culture is ridgid and orderly, but consequently structured, and so youth can be maintained and even encouraged. Not only that, their icy lifestyle may well encourage a slower growth, as ice isn't exactly known for its high metabolism.
Mudwings, as another example, may well mature very quickly, due to their sibling relationship. They have no parents, and instead, rely on one another immediately after birth. While they're doubtless provided for to an extent for the first years by those around them, it can be assumed they must seek their own meals earlier than most any dragon. So I would expect, and I'd dare to say Clay shows this at least in his book, they're much more inclined to maturity from an early age than others.
Nightwings are one that is very interesting, as their abilities may well supercede youth in many cases. Though I imagine they treat the young as young, given those with powers are exceptions, rather than the rule, and those powers aren't always so powerful as to give access to far greater experience and knowledge than would be typical for their age.

Some animals grow very quickly before reaching sexual maturity (the same as adulthood), and then growing slows down after they reach that age. Therefore, I think it would be somewhat reasonable to believe that dragons grow/mature quicker up to age 7, then the growth rate slows. A dragon's maturity also depends on the environment they grew up in, as sometimes they are forced to mature quicker than they should (ex: royalty). It could also vary between species/tribes. I think 150 is a reasonable life expectancy.
With this information, here is how I interpret the ages (1-7)
    1 - 3 h. years
    2 - 6 h. years
    3 - 9 h. years
    4 - 12 h. years
    5 - 15 h. years
    6 - 18 h. years
    7 - 21 h. years
They don't reach the human conversion right away, it's more throughout the year until their next hatching day. Once they reach adulthood, I think they would age only about 1 human year per dragon year. (ex: 8 = 22, 9 = 23, etc)

Imo I think it's like people. People mature at differant ages and I think that's what tui was going for here. Some people are forced to mature early, like Anemone and Clearsight, while some mature at the normal level, like Minx and Cliff. But one thing I'm not so sure about is Glory x Deathbringer. I like their dynamic but If you think about their ages it gets weird. Glory is supposed to be around 6,7 the human age for a 16 year old. Deathbringer is 11,12 (cant remember which) which is the same as a person in their mid thirties. I dont think Tui meant to do that as the winglet Deathbringer was in was written before Book 3. My final point is I think the DoD are mature enough to run a school. The entirety of Arc 1 shows what they have been through. They had to escape abusive guardians, be held captive, forced to murder others for entertainment, escape, get caught again, escape once more and succeed, face the dragon that wants them dead and flee from an attack on the summer palace. And that's only two books. Consider the fact that Glory is only 7 and ruling TWO tribes and doing a pretty well job. So yeah I think they are mature enough given what they've been through.

i think its probably one of the most rushed aspects of the WoF universe, like with another user Anemone was practically made to mature faster due to her effectively being helicoptered by her mother attending every meeting, and expected to behave. forced to grow up mentally way too fast which unfortunately happens irl which psychology stuff happens and its usually the worse ends of the stick.
i guess it can all come up with how the dragon was raised- letting them be a kid may lead them still being considered "immature", forced to grow up would lead them to act more adult, etc. of course it doesnt excuse anything, esp when it comes to shipping. a dragonet who is young but acts mature is still a child, and vice verse.
with the DoD making the school? its a good idea and they are the main front on that but i like to believe over time they hired more adult faculty members to teach, and eventually split dragons in age. anyone within reason can attend a university afterall in Moon Rising the academy was in its early days so if a fourth arc ever comes and IF a timeskip is present we may see something about any pressing issues.
still. an overlooked aspect that should have been kept in the oven a little longer. at the moment i rely on the more headcanon age theory.

Also, a dragon's paretning style and stuff affect a dragon's growth significantly, so since Glacier was loose with Mink and let her play around alot, whereas Anemone was around an adult 24/7 and went to political meetings from a very young age. Moon hearing thoughts from many dragons, even those significantly older than her, would have affected her growth. Clearsight seeing every path of the future and stuff would have affected her alot too. Anyway. Just my opinion, great video as always :D

Maybe it's because I'm also a fan of star wars and basically everyone in that fandom just picks and chooses what they like and what they think makes sense I just go with my own ageing system and I've always just seen deathbringer as an 8-9 year old instead of 13 because I don't mind looking past these mistakes my ageing is pretty simple
If a dragon is 2 then they're 12 or if they're 7 there 17 and if they're 19 there like 29 idk it just makes it less confusing for me

About schoolrunning: in my country there is a thing, the self-government day. It happens every year, obviously. It's the day when students of 10 and 11 grades must teach grades from 5 to 9 (or even from 1 to 9, idr??) and it's going okay, students are listen and doing their tasks, the only difference is that students and "teachers" can make jokes between each other. So if DoD are responsible enough, why not?

I also thought that the wings of fire dragon aging made zero sense but I kind of found a way for me to make it make sense:
    1 human year=6 dragon years
2 human years=8 dragon years 3 human years=10 dragon years
    4 human years=12 dragon years
    5 human years=14 dragon years
    6 human years=16 dragon years
    7 human years=18 dragon years
Every year after that= +1 year
I think that it makes sense that an 8 year old can act like Mink and if born with pressure and magic like Clearsight and Anemone an 8 year old can also act like that and with the dod and Umber an 18 year old is still a teen but it’s also considered an adult so I does make sense that Umber can act like a teenager and that the dod can act like and adult, and a 19 year old is also still a teenager and I it doesn’t make zero sense that Sky acts like that.
English is my second language so I apologize if some of the words or sentence look wierd or is written wrong.
    Great video as always 4rcrane!

Idk, I just imagine some dragons' ages as my hc and just stick to it (for example, DoD are at least 10+ in my head, because I can't imagine running a whole school with "dragonets" that are older than you?)
Also, the whole thing about all students of JMA being the "hope for the future of Pyrrhia" and "probably not have killed anyone in their lives" (quotes from Peril's book) is kinda confusing. Most of these "dragonets" were a part of the war, likely taking active part in it. We know most, if not all, MudWings were forced to fight, IceWing's who were Icicle and Winter's age would also fight (unless you were a main protagonist like Winter, who wasn't forced to fight, unlike his sister for some reason), SkyWings, even if they weren't supporting of Scarlet's rule, were most possibly also trained and used as warriors (since I can't believe Scarlet would find any other "use" for them).
Basically JMA is a mountain full of traumatized, teenage/young-adult/full-grown adult soldiers or war victims in dire need of therapy, looked after by dragonets who are at best 2 years older than them (whatever that means in the dragon world, it still can't be enough. Especially since I'm pretty sure a dragon is considered a fully grown adult at 7 years old and the DoDs are 6... Yeah). Not to mention that the school would definitely need some guards/security, because dragonets are disappearing left and right, wars are being started, dragons are dying. I'm either baffled by hoe idotic the queens are to still alow students to stay there, or amazed at the DoDs amazing persuasion skills to make the queens trust them enough to take care of everything even after all that's happened.
I love wof, but some inconsistencies or just some... confusing writing choices make me go mad.

Without dedicated mapping this out, this likely creates more issues than it solves, except for maybe mudwings. If the first to hatch is always the biggest, Part of me feels like the way mudwings work is that egg cells are released in the body one at a time year by year and when a bunch of eggs come out together the egs themselves are slightly different ages. I know that that biologically makes lits sense for many reasons, but they also breath fire so I think that’s ok.

  • @Tao_7891
    @Tao_7891 Год назад +1

this is a really good collection of all the age issues and is really interesting.
My plausible headcanon is that while dragons are intellectually based on age and environment similar to humans, the environment affects them to a much greater degree in their progression than ours. Since having a slower development is advantageous to the social intelligence of species, but having a faster development is advantageous to the reproduction rate of a species, dragons could do both, so would often forgo the slower human-like development in poor conditions to survive better (as species, not as individuals). Pyrrhia seems like it has often been in near-constant conflict, much more so than human history, (the bloodiness of human history is overexaggerated as we always focus on the wars and not the peacetimes) so it would make sense for dragons to have the ability to "grow up" incredibly fast in certain conditions.
If this was all true, it would make sense that the dragons don't see age the same as us, and situations like much older students alongside much younger might be normal.
This does not excuse all the massive age differences tho, as there are still often extreme social power dynamics in some relationships.

1: darkstalker and clear sight were 3 and 4, not 2 and 3.
2: anemone was basically hatched to be educated so her reading makes sense. While mink may be on the lower side of 2, after just turned 2 and closer to 3 are both 2 but with around a year of difference. Mink could also have developmental differences like Whiteout.
3: while dragons mature at 7, nightwings legally don't consider you adult until 10. In our world it would be like if one country had a different legal age than 18, so even if we considered a 19 year old an adult a country with a higher legal age would not, leaving them legally a child despite maturity and knowledge, sort of how we treat 17yearolds here. So that's not an age descrempancy, just a cultural difference.
4: peril is immature because of her circumstances, like sky.
5: the DoD saved the world at 6, they have the respect of the queens. No one is challenging their capabilities. Also clay specifically wanted his siblings. And 7 or not, education is lacking in the war, especially for mudwings who have no mention of schools like the the other tribes. And it's clearly shown that umber is... Less mature than his sibs, likely due to trauma or developmental difference.
6: onyx is there to spy, not get an education. Even if she was there for school it would make sense because palm kept her isolated so who knows what her education quality was like. And JMA was about social exposure first and education second. It was a peace experiment way more than it was a school. The school part was an excuse, an afterthought the barely had it worked out before they started. Webs was the only teacher with any kind of actual lesson plan.

I see it as a problem of new information that doesn’t fully take into account what has already been established. It’s a problem with many series, you write a story and have an idea where to wanna take and or multiple ideas that you don’t know how to quite put together in a story.
You may end up going off course with story beats as filler and or having tunnel vision with cartoon characters. This can lead to plot holes, inconsistencies in character, unresolved story beats, rushed endings, absence of foreshadowing, deus ex machima, missing characters, etc…
Word of advice from someone who is writing out an AU where Carnelian survived the library explosion while keeping the core story of each book. Think about your story beats and how they fit together. The order you have them in now may not be the best order to write them in.
Take my carnelian AU for example. Originally it was just if Carnelian survived as well as well as a rework of animus magic to not make it so broken. But has escalated to each book having 5 parts with 2 POV’s, The order of books shuffling around, Kinkajou not being knocked out by Chameleon, Umber and Sora returning into the story, Hailstorm regaining his memory but being stuck in the body of Pyrite, Ruby turning back into Tourmaline but not regaining her memories, Darkstalker awakening earlier than normal, Kinkajou goes to the Ice kingdom disguised as an Icewing named Soweasel and pulls it off well enough, Chameleon is turned into an amalgamation of his forms by Darkstalker who ends up destroying his own mind. As for the new order of books it’s.
Book 1 Moon Rising POV: Moonwatcher, Carnelian
Book 2 Escaping Peril POV: Peril, Umber
Book 3 Winter Turning POV: Winter, Hailstorm
Book 4 Darkness of Dragons POV: Qibli, Onyx
Book 5 Talons of Power POV: Turtle, Anemone
That’s not even going into Plantala and Arc 3 of this AU. Much darker than the original, that’s for sure.

In terms of Dragons being included in the school I always assumed that it was due to the school being dragon in origin combined with the chaos of the world after the war of the queens. The school being dragon in origin specifically mattering due to differing social norms and rules, which would make age far less important in education as compared to education received - as in if you don't have the education any dragon can apply and mostly younger dragons were chosen to attend due to the older dragons wanting the younger ones to learn to be better than they were due to the war. In terms of dragons being more or less mature I assumed that had more directly to do with genetics combined with experience.

Honestly, what's the worst for the plot has been animus magic. It's a cool concept, of course I can't deny it, but animus magic made Tui write herself into a corner. I can't seriously believe how stupid other characters were about it. Like they did mistakes that felt like common sense? Like for example: Turtle in talons of power could have stopped Darkstalker if he made a ring that couldn't be taken off and was made to stop all of Darkstalkers magic. Put that enchanted item on Darkstalker, he dies, arc done. Or why did turtle at the end of book 9 get himself captured by Darkstalker. Couldn't he have split his stick and given pieces to Anemone and Kinkajou? I'm glad Tui made animus magic not work for arc 3.

Aging has always left me dumbfounded. My first theory was, 1 DY = 1.5 DY. But 18 is not a multiple of 7. So then I ran a calculation. During the first 7 years the age equivalent is 1 HY = 2.57 DY. I remember mentioning this in one of JMA’s videos specifically this one ruclips.net/video/HfQ6rP1wLPM/видео.html (from what I can remember) He said that there was a ratio: Dragons grow faster early on than people, but then it takes them longer to progress through adult hood.
Here’s the chat from the video’s comments.
Me: I am no professional (But I am a good Dracologist) The human-Dragon year thing always puzzled me 🤔. My first conclusion was that 1 H year is 1.5 D year. My next conclusion was that dragons took more time to mentally develop because 18 a nearly fully developed H adult was only seven for a D. My current conclusion is that H take more time to develop because at just seven years dragons are a full grown adult. But now thinking about it that would not make sense. Bc H years are real D years are not . That means that it would take 18 years just for a dragon to reach 7 years. But & years is seen as adult hood. I just ran the calculator and apparently both 18/7 and 27/12 clocked at 2 years. But because 18 is not a multiple of seven, it would be more like 2.5 years. Mentally it would take 18 years (H time is real D time is not) for both dragons and humans to reach (young) adult hood. Dragons would celebrate their “hatching day” every 2.5 years. It’s complex.
JMA: Complex indeed. I think what may make it even more complex (but perhaps also more simple to understand) is that the relationship between human years and dragon years likely isn't linear. What I mean by that is that the relationship between them changes as they get older. So, for the first two or three years, it might be a 3:1 ratio, then the next couple of years it's a 2:1 ratio, then a 1:1 for a little bit, and then something like a 1:4 after they've reached adulthood. So, basically, dragons reach adulthood faster than humans but then progress through adulthood more slowly than humans. Does that make sense?
    Me: Not at all.
And if you think this is fake, I got screenshots.

    • @General_Belu
      @General_Belu Год назад

So anyways, it’s not easy to tell the age ratio.

  • @pupville1055
    @pupville1055 Год назад

Personally, I don't really see it as *that* confusing. Dragons age rapidly for the first decade of life, both psychologically and physically. Once this milestone of '7' is reached, I assumed they'd just age normally, year by year, like a human would? Since I see a dragon of 7 years being the equivalent to an 18-21-year-old person.
By that logic, characters like Deathbringer or Peril would only be in their early twenties. Or, say, Queen Thorn who'd be in her early thirties if she's around 20-years-old.
Keep in mind, too, that people can age differently based on not only their background, but experiences and personalities. Anemone and Mink both seem like realistic depictions of a 6-8-year-old kid. Just... y'know, different. They're not the same character.
Besides, it's like what Sutherland said. It's not meant to be a 1 to 1 conversion. It's only an *approximation* of ages.
