One Pocket Break

  • A collection of different one pocket breaks. With the traditional break, the idea is to strike the first and second balls evenly with inside english and leave the cue ball on the rail close to the second or third diamond. Depending on the table, breaking with your hand on the rail or on the table may be preferred. Typically, the closer the cue ball moves to the center of the table, the less chance of scratching or the corner ball leaking out (since there is more of a glancing impact).

    I always thought if you pocketed a ball in break you have to re rack , and at least 2 balls ( not cueball included) has to touch the cushion ?
    great break tutorial and soundtrack

      Most tournaments have definitely gone the route of rack your own, and a ball on the break doesn't count. It used to be a lot more common to play that a ball on the break counts, and I still see it played that way in some gambling matches.
      It's just 1 ball that has to contact a rail on the break, and it can be the cue ball or the object ball.
      From the BCA rules: "On the break, the cue ball may contact either a cushion or any ball in the rack first, but in either case, after contacting at least one ball, an object ball must be pocketed, or the cue ball or at least one object ball must contact a rail, otherwise it is a one foul penalty"

    Looks like the scratch break is caused by hitting the front ball to thin but not sure?

    • @PoolMonsters
      @PoolMonsters  Год назад +2

      Yep, too too thin on the front ball / too thick on the second ball. Whenever I start scratching a lot, I just move the cue ball away from the rail and break with my hand on the table. Doing so causes more of a glancing blow on the rack, which causes less ball movement and the cue ball wont kiss off the corner ball and scratch.

    Question what makes the corner ball pop out towards the opponent's corner when braking?

    • @PoolMonsters
      @PoolMonsters  3 года назад +3

      I think it tends to happen more often when the rack is not tight and when hitting the front ball too thick. To remedy the corner ball popping out, you can move the cue ball closer to the center of the table, which creates more of a glancing blow on the rack. Here is a pretty good thread on the topic: forums.azbilliards.com/threads/troule-with-one-pocket-break.82979/

    A more conservative break where the balls don’t open up as much can be executed by moving the cue ball away from the rail a few inches.. there are times and players that you don’t wanna open the balls up against..

      Just hit it slow and hope it doesn't roll off I guess. It's not a break I have ever used in a match. When I was younger a lot of the old guys would use it on me to try and slow the game down and pick me off one ball at a time.

    Ball on break, where’s the sweet spot and I’m assuming slightly more speed?

    • @PoolMonsters
      @PoolMonsters  3 года назад +1

      I've always felt like when I make a ball on the break, it's because the cue ball struck the second ball thicker than intended. It's not really something you are trying to do, but on some tables and conditions, the corner ball can go pretty often. I made it 3 times in a row in a tournament that was using the re-rack rule, then sold out on the 4th break. Pretty frustrating.
      Here is a really good forum thread discussing a ball on the break: forums.azbilliards.com/threads/one-pocket-break-secrets.424749/

    One ball and cue ball to rail for legal break?

    • @PoolMonsters
      @PoolMonsters  3 года назад +1

      I've always played that 1 ball (either the cue ball or an object ball) must hit a rail after the rack is contacted. That's what is listed under the BCA rules as well:
      "On the break, the cue ball may contact either a cushion or any ball in the rack first, but in either case, after contacting at least one ball, an object ball must be pocketed, or the cue ball or at least one object ball must contact a rail, otherwise it is a one foul penalty."

      @@PoolMonsters what’s your thoughts on the dreaded corner ball popping out on opponents side? I’ve always read the first two balls you contact and the 4th and 5th balls on opponents side frozen to try and prevent. Interested to hear other opinions?

    • @PoolMonsters
      @PoolMonsters  3 года назад

      @@scottbacci8933 I definitely agree with that. I try to ensure that all 5 balls on the same side I am breaking from are frozen (i.e., the line on the opponent's side).

    • @PoolMonsters
      @PoolMonsters  3 года назад

      You can also move the cue ball more towards the center of the table, which will create more of a glancing blow off the rack.
