Yeah! Allegedly he used a regular bass to record it, but there has to be at least a bit of bass VI on it, for those lead lines and higher open strings.
It’s a P-Bass on the recording. "I added the six-string bass on the Faith album. I think [producer] Mike Hedges stole it. I'm not sure from whom, but he said they'd never miss it. He worked with a lot of big-name artists and he felt it was his duty as a socialist to relieve them of some of their worldly possessions. So he gave me that at the end of 17 Seconds. I actually wrote "Primary" on it and incorporated it into a few other things. But to record the actual take of "Primary," I had to use a Fender Precision bass instead. The six-string bass was pretty iffy down at the bottom of the neck of the sixth string. It buzzed and you couldn't hear what you were playing. " - Robert Smith
@@pocojoyo Yes, everything except the C - D ("ooh remember") and the outro (G - A etc "so they close together…" has open strings droning… and the lead has the high E open droning.
I used it here because I think it might be what they used on the recording. I know that at some point of the 17 Seconds tour he was using it, so I just guessed it could be the one used on Faith too.
The song was actually recorded on two Fender P Basses. It was written for the Bass VI - but they couldn't stop the strings from flubbing out - so they used a second P Bass for the lead.
@@TC1982-4 this is 100% true. Robert Smith has confirmed this in interviews. The Bass VI was too muddy, so they used two precision basses. They tried to record it with the Bass VI, but it didn't work out.

If you want to hear an album using the Bass VI as the sole bass - The Church recorded Priest=Aura with only the Bass VI as the main bass - and it sounds fantastic.
Now I can hear the song with four basses.
5 if you play along!
Years ago I used to copy your videos obsessively. Before I learned to work the songs out by myself. Thanks for that! Happy you're still going.
So, it is a bass VI. Now I understand. Thanks! Great video.

Sonido Brillante, simplemente Perfección, Felicidades!
Gracias!
Best cover. I notice that in the intro and at prechorus the bass plays E - D - E - A, instead of E - A - E - D, right ?
Right Sir.
Yes, on the intro and verses.
the mystery bass guitar string. great playing.
You've got it !!!
Thanks :)
Amazing job, sounds identical to my ears
Thank you! Putting the flanger after the distortion was a real surprise, I usually put it before.
Sounds great! I've got a Schecter Hellcat VI and use to have that Hot Tubes too... great blend.
Thanks! I agree, the Hot Tubes works very well with a VI.
Superb!! (1poser1 Bandhub!) pretty sure you are on some of my earlier videos!
perfect ! would you share tabs or tips to play it on a Bass VI ?
Thanks! I don't have tabs yet… Robert's part is fairly simple, mostly E, A, E, D with the little riff. Simon's line has more variations.
@@Guedzilla but is he droning open strings ?

@@Guedzilla Regular tuning ?
@@pocojoyo Yup
Great transcription and cover.
Makes sense 'why' this song is near impossible to get right on a standard guitar.
Thanks. I wonder why they stopped playing with a VI live.
Awesome 👍👍
Thanks!
This was AWESOME! Great job. Perfect tone, too. This is one of my favorite Cure songs.
Thanks Mitch! :) I'm surprised at how it turned out, to be honest… putting a drive before the flanger for the leads really glued it together.
@@Guedzilla No problem! Yeah, it sounded spot-on. The flanger setting was perfect. 👌🏻
@@Guedzilla I’ve still got to get me an MXR Flanger! I don’t have one yet. (I know - surprising!)

Huh, I thought the Boss BF2 was only released later but I just checked, it was 1980, so it could have been already it.
You nailed it! this is one of my favourite Cure songs and I always wondered how they got that bass sound. Thanks for sharing!

You still got it man, you should try upstairs room next.
Nailed that tone.
Great job,love it👏👍👍
Muito bom, Gued!
Valeu! :D
Incredible!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Great job man!!
Are there octaves or harmonies on Simon’s part? The Robert part looks like it has some weird 7ths and octaves during the verses.
I don't think so... but Robert's part goes E A E D, while SImon's goes E D E A.
What effects pedals are used to get that sound? Would love to know.
Great job! I need more practice on this.
Thanks! It's a bit heavy on the right hand if you want to go for that particular way (I think) it was played.
Good
Pô cara, ficou bem massa.
Perfeito !!!
Opa, valeu! :D
I don't understand how you can play so fast with the right hand while giving all the strokes downwards
I uh... you have to move the wrist I guess, not the whole arm.
Ficou massa, hein?!
Que honra o sr por aqui!
