Wow, that's so cool! I've been listening to that music for so many years and I never realized that it was a Bass VI. I have been obsessing about it for a few days now, and planning to get one, but this video of what Robert is actually doing on the Bass VI is amazing to see! I will have to come back here after I get mine and learn all these parts!!
A fender or squier bass vi can have the sound changed even more due to the 4th selector switch switching it from treble bass and middle and the first 3 each can change each pickup from bass to guitar toned individually

Seriously. I cannot put enough enthusiasm into clicking that Like button. I really can't. So, take this as a hundred thousand million LIKES! This (and your Wish video) brought me so much joy. You nailed every nuance and your playing is genius. Thank you for sharing your talent! Yours is one of the purest and closest sounds of Robert's guitar, my mind is blown. My milestone birthday is in seven days, and as a gift to myself, I was looking for a good guitar that will help me achieve this sound. Disintegration truly is the best album ever. The serendipity of all the steps of my research led me to ebay, and led to putting the Bass VI on my watchlist while I pondered, and then to your channel-and you 100% helped solidify my decision. And THANK YOU for being kind enough to share your equipment list as well. I've had songs rolling around inside of me for years and they live in that world framed by Robert's sound. I am so excited that this is one large step closer to making that real. Truly, thank you for making my day. Please keep it up. Great stuff all around! High-fives!
This album for me is The Cure and Robert Smith's best. Like other masterpieces of the pop/rock genres it envelops the listener and pulls them into the body of the music. For me it's up there with Animals & Dark Side of the Moon, Born to Run, Meat is Murder, Appetite for Destruction. The kind of album that stays with you through a lifetime. I just listened to the originals on Tidal and these cover versions side by side, and they are so close it's quite remarkable considering that some of the gear although similar, is not actually the same as what Robert Smith used. Well done and thanks :-)))
This is awesome mate, so many bass vi videos online are just folk playing basslines on them. Great to hear these epic cure lead lines played on it, and you've nailed the tone on each one.
thank you for this, made me very happy, well done & great to get a better understanding of this instrument in relation to an album i THOUGHT i new inside & out
Hey thanks for doing this video. It's my fav Cure album and Robert's playing made me want to get a Fender VI but there doesn't seem to be any left handed ones around 😑 love the sound he does with it 9:25
I just got a Squier Bass Vi a few weeks ago and its been a blast. You'll love it. Its made me realize how extensively it was used by Robert Smith. Its sounds is part of what makes The Cure.
Hey there! first - congrats, I'm sure you'll have a great time with it. I have in my VI the Seymour Duncan SJAG-1 Jaguar pickups, which came stock with the guitar. I think Robert also has them in his signature VI
Thank you! I've used mostly chorus, delay and amp spring reverb, plus a lil' bit of added reverb later in the post production. you can read about all the gear used here in the description!
Well!!! Being a big fan of the Cure (especially for Disintegration, best album ever) after your videos I had definitely to get a Schecter Hellcat VI.. but I'm a bass player and I do not use/have too many pedals. I saw in your description that you have been using a lot of stuff: Vox AC15cc (blueback) Boss GE7 equalizer EHX Small Clone Chorus Boss DD7 delay Shure SM57 Steinberg CI2 Cubase 10 Artist What would you recommend as a basic set of pedals to get closer to your sound? Thanks indeed for any comment and well done again.. Impressive.
Thanks for the comment!🙏🏻 To get the basic “Cure” sounds (or let’s face it - new wave/post punk guitar sound) all you need is a good analogue chorus, delay and some reverb (could be the amp’s reverb as well). Rob’s particular VI tone is quite midrange-y, so I used an EQ pedal just to boost these frequencies a little bit and drive my amp a little more. But it’s not necessary.
First of all, You're welcome! and thank you for watching :-) As for the tuning, I play in a standard Bass VI tuning (E-e, one octave below regular electric guitar) but I'm tuned in this video a bit higher than concert pitch - 443Hz if I'm not mistaken, maybe even 445Hz. Because Disintegration was recorded fully analog, probably somewhere in the process the tape got a bit sped-up, thus the whole album is not in concert pitch. Hope I might have helped!
@@yoavlandau3063 you have been extremely helpful!!! Thank you again for the videos!! There honest to God the most helpful cure 6 sting bass videos I can find on the internet. My friends and I love them!!! Thank you for the tuning and reply!!
@@Daphney0310 Hey man, ask whatever you like, as much as you’d like! ;-) The answer for your question is ABSOLUTELY NO. I use the VI as a very low guitar, and I’m always plugged (as you can see in this video) into a guitar amp, not a bass amp. The same goes to a lot of other VI players: The Cure, Cocteau Twins, Slash, Joe Perry, Brian Moloko, John Frusciante, The Beatles... You see, your Squier has passive Jaguar pickups and it doesn’t produce enough low frequencies to do any harm to you amp. On a side note, I believe that the same goes to other passive basses, but I know that this stance is a-bit more controversial.

Okay I'm lost - I see a guy (wonderfully) playing a GUITAR covering the lead GUITAR lines while the original bass in the background is completely different. How are these BASS covers, exactly?? What am I missing here?
So what I play here is a Bass VI - a six string guitar tuned one full octave lower than a regular guitar. So the four low strings are in the bass range (much lower than a baritone), while I also have high b and e strings. It has a long 30” scale length and it lives, both practically and sonically, somewhere between a bass and a guitar. it has a unique timber of its own, so a lot of artists (like the Cure and myself) use it more like a low guitar rather than as a bass. Hope I made it clear, and thank you for your compliment :-)
