Today we'll be looking at Geddy Lee's awesome bass solo in the song La Villa Strangiato by Rush. This solo caused me all kinds of problems when I first started out so I've got a few tips and tricks for getting through it!

Thank you Mark! I have been playing Rush on bass for probably 40+ years, but sometimes, especially the way Ged plays, its extremely difficult to pick apart exactly what he is doing. This video just did that for me! I have played that solo slightly off for decades now, until I saw this...Thank you!!

I learned La Villa Strangiato many years ago and it took me forever to figure out the solo. I think we were learning it the same time. Would've been nice to have those video back then. 😁 Nice work Sir.

You play it exactly how I play it. Or I the way you play it. That open "D" may be just an off the cuff that works for him, or, it may have been on purpose. Learning a bunch of Geddy Lee myself I came to realize that he uses some really interesting note choices that aren't even really realized until you learn and put them together. Great job. I enjoy your videos.

Thanks Mark. I’m Steve my friends all over the US. Call me Geddy. Because I play and sing Geddy Lee of Rush. Since early 1980’s. When most people didn’t play Rush. Because they either didn’t want to put in the time to learn it or they gave up because it was too hard too difficult for them. That being said I have not played all of his runs perfect but close. Only until now and it’s 2020 this year But 2010. Did people start getting more into RUSH and learning how to play it. But when I was learning it in the 80s I had to learn off of a cassette tape rewind it many times over and over or even an album all the worlds a stage is my favorite album and I learned mosasaurs and seeing them as well as play them so I had double duty. But I put my nose to the grind stone and put in less hours and was able to maybe not play it perfect play garner say it perfect cause I’m a tenor. And people loved that we were playing Rush that was with a 12-year-old drummer I was 20 years old and his 16-year-old brother who played guitar.You can see me on RUclips just type my name Steve Nordstedt sings and plays. If you check it out that be cool but I would like to learn the middle runs of YYZ.I’ve got tablature I’ve got the album I got Siri still can’t get it and I look at other people and their versions of it. But you are right on and I like that about you you’re a great Bassler I have gotten a slap in the last two months and I’ve been learning a lot from your videos and I just want to say thank you. Last year 2019 my buddy who’s a big rush Pham like I am but doesn’t play any instrument but himself and me Gary Lee’s big beautiful book a bass. So we get to meet him I had to fly to Philadelphia he just lives over the bridge in New Jersey where are used to live but I live in Central Florida deland now but I’ve got a picture of me and Geddy my friend took. it was pretty cool special to me.
There are a few versions of this out there. I like yours the best. I figured it out on my own, but was never completely satisfied with my take on it. There is quite a lot of "noise" on the original. Thanks!!!

Great work Mark. This has always been really difficult to grasp. Shame about the raking though as I don't have any fingers on my left hand so can only play with my thumb. . . Still, maybe in 20 years. 😃😄😅
Interesting, I learned to do raking backwards from this - I pick with the index finger and rake across two strings with the middle finger (which is how I thought Geddy did it but I could be wrong). With the middle finger being longer it seems to be better suited to hit two strings with it. I discovered the raking thing in 1985 when I was trying to learn the first verse of Rush's The Big Money (and then soon after, Territories, which is an absolute orgy of raking).
i have played it all the time with an A and not an open D string,i have learned it a long time ago and always played it like that :)
This is a great video! May I request a tip tutorial for the bass line during the guitar solo of Tom Sawyer? That part always give me a hard time because of the dexterity and speed needed to play it. Thanks very much!
I had trouble with that Tom Sawyer gt solo bassline too until I saw Geddy do it on the video taken in Le Studio. Watch Geddy do it!

Thank you for the breakdown of this part. Geddy moves so fast and it sort of blurs when listening to it. I've played Bass in all types of genre for 25 years and by far this is the best lesson given. I will subscribe to your channel thanks
This was great! If you could, I have been struggling forever with how to play the main riff of YYZ. Specifically, how do you pick it with your right hand? It just seems like to many notes for my fingers! I don't see how to play it!
It's another riff using the raking technique of the right hand.

Mark, what kind of pickups are in your bass?
I've misheard it and, instead of the open D, always played the higher D. I like this because it really works with the hammering and pull offs. I do like that A as well though! :)
Not sure about the open D. Doesn't work for me.

It's great that you can do that solo, I gotta say tho, you should be careful not to assume what someone was going for, with their choice of notes...you saying we could use a different note changes the sound of that solo. As a musician (bass + guitar) I can hear those subtle changes so, it should be learned as it was, although it may be difficult, written/intended
When you watch geddy play this live, he never uses the pinky finger. He plays it the same way i do which may be harder. Its certainly more awkward and you play it probably the more comfortable/natural way.
Geddy always had that angle on his fingering hand so he would be in a position to play things like this with just 3 fingers, no pinky. So your fingering hand is more straight/traditional on the board, the way someone would be taught it by a trained bassist. But he never took lessons so he developed differently and really didnt use his pinky in situations where others would. Ive watched the guy so closely over many years.
What kind of bass is that? Mainly interested in what type of pickups they are.
Definitely an Ibanez SDGR series.

Wow! Just checked that out. That's a real bass solo - soloing over changes, etc. I always thought of the La Villa solo as just an extended fill not a solo, but that Eiti Leda solo real deal, full on, big time solo. ruclips.net/video/oFJQoa8_vOo/видео.html for anyone that's interested.
Sounds like there's a point where he's doing similar raking on similar sets of notes as the La Villa solo.

I often hear WAY more complexity from Geddy than what is perceived/written on paper! (i.e. triplets, ghost notes, slurs, etc.)

No. He only started doing that later on in his career. The flutter picking thing wouldn't work well with this run anyway because of the note groupings. Back in the 1970s he just played normal 2 finger picking.
Only when he plays with the flutter picking style. Before that he was just 2 finger picking.
youre missing the first couple of pickup notes, shuffle eighth notes, not straight. I recall studying this solo many years ago, roughly 1983. I first tried to figure it out by ear, but it was just too quick to hear the beginning notes. It sounded like an E riff generally, but I was stumped. I brought it to a bass teacher but his conclusion didn't satisfy me. I then found the sheet music. the transcribed charts for the Hemispheres album indicated a C as the 4th note and for years I was convinced that this had to be right. it seemed to line up and seemed logical enough. What you've suggested, E flat, seems to be an odd choice, but I'm not ruling it out because it's actually more difficult to play the C. Ive been playing the C on the E string, not the A string, but either way its awkward and challenging getting from the C to the A on the D string to continue with the rest of the solo.
thnx for your effort on this Amazing bass lick . IMhO. I think youre not totally correct in your analyse of the start of this lick . It should be : A E D D# A G D# and Then to the octave D and so on . it is less modal than you explain . anyway greetz from another Geddy Fan

I think it's an acquired taste. It has the classic SDGR tone. It's very recognizable. Even with the upgraded pickups, it still sounds like an Ibanez.
wow you use more vibrato than some lead guitarists. Not sure about some of those notes. I've been trying to play it for 40 years and maybe I've been overcomplicating it. Probably.

Great lesson. But I think your bass sounds like poo. Plus I think you need a truss adjustment with how bad your E note is buzzing on the A string on the 6th fret
Geddy's original album version is more jazzy in the feel - even more hammer-ons and pull-offs in just the right places to get a smoother feel than the staccato way its played in this video - I believe the raking part Geddy does pull-off/hammer-on to get the jazzy smooth feel. But notes seem more correct than in most other videos
