Just a tip for someone who also works in a traditional/digital workflow: you can use photoshop to help compose your images! My process as follows: - make a letter (or A4) sized document, create 2-6 small boxes to the desired aspect ratio of your image (2:3, 5:7, or 4:3) using the rectangle marquee tool in "fixed ratio option" and add stroke. - print the sheet and draw your image compositions within the boxes - rescan the sheet into photoshop, select you desired comp, and make whatever adjustments you want From here you can: - reprint your composition to a larger sheet of paper to use as a guide OR -drop the opacity of the comp before printing, draw more details on top of the printout, then rescan again -print a very low opacity image onto your final surface (I have a large-format printer, so I can print my guide directly onto watercolor paper and paint on top of it without tracing) OR -size the sketch up to the desired final image size, export as PDF, then print tiled within Adobe Acrobat. then you tape the pages together, put transfer paper on the back, then trace it down onto your canvas/watercolor paper

I absolutely love watching any video where you show your progress - it feels so personally validating when I see you throwing out multiple messy and sometimes unfinished sketches as you just let your imagination wander while trusting it will take you where you know you want to eventually land. And it is also reassuring to see that you don’t go from sketch to final piece in a matter of hours, but rather days, or weeks, or sometimes even more than a month. It just... it makes me feel less of a fraud or a failure when I am uncertain or just feeling plain slow. Thank you so much for all your videos!!!

Ah I'm so glad you enjoyed it and found it useful, thank you! Something I really hope to be able to emphasize and show in my videos is how every single artist's process is different and valid. Some people are able to jump into a painting immediately (that used to be me), some take a little longer like me now, and some take a very long time. None of those approaches are better or worse, they are all valid and will depend on how each of us works best. So long as you are creating what feels true to you, you are not a failure or a fraud. There is no higher truer definition of what an artist is and how they should work to fit the "job description" and be valid. It is all down to the individual and what fits each of us best. My way isn't the "right" way, it's just my right way. For now. Who knows how it will change as I keep going :) Your way is just as valid for you as mine if for me.

It is a scary venture to really let go and trust that it’s okay to let your process just be what it wants to be in the moment - fast or slow, planned or intuitive, structured or variable - and really accept the art that is produced in the end. Anywho, long response is long, and I just really wanted to thank you for doing what you do because it encourages and validates creative wanderers like myself!
i really appreciate how open you are in sharing your creative process, especially as a surrealistic artist. I love going the surrealistic route with my own artwork but often get stuck at how to flesh out ideas, and I can never find other artists who share that process like you. thank you! it helps alot and gives me so much inspiration

I'm glad you found my video helpful in some way! This is the kind of content I would love to see from the artists I personally am inspired by, but it is very time consuming to create so I understand why many can't share it, so I try to do it when I can, as I know how useful it can be. :) If it is any reassurance, I have only recently been able to develop my ideas in this way, but it has taken me time and practice to get there. I didn't use to work this way and I used to hit similar roadblocks to what you mention, so don't worry, things will evolve and you find your own way I'm sure of it.
@@pogz1 Finding a way to work that helps you improve and works for you is hard, and it has taken me years, and will probably take me many more. If you feel like you need an external eye to help you progress, which most of us do at some point or another, I would recommend finding some artists who offer that service on their platforms or on Patreon! Not many can do it or offer it because it is difficult and very effort-intensive, but some do, so take advantage of their offers if you can! Artists who offer teaching content consistently on RUclips will often have a tier on their patreon that offers critiques :)
I'm always so amazed by people who plan their pieces a lot. My process is so impulsive and spontaneous that I couldn't plan out anything for too long before diving into action.
Oh trust me, I used to work a lot more quickly and impulsively, and to be honest, I never thought I would enjoy the way I work now. :) Things just kept evolving and changing, and for me that meant working more and more like this, which has been a fascinating evolution to go through. I completely understand working either way. :)

@@myriamtillson I am well and all is well as winter approaches in these Tasmanian highlands. It's always frustrating when people ask you, "how long did it take you to make that" (painting or whatever). They freak out if you say: Well, the actual painting took "x" hours, but the research has taken me about 5 years.
Wow, actually this video inspired me so much. I've had some trouble working with one peace but never really tried your method. I also have trouble with sizing -,- thank you for sharing your process, such great ideas! ♥

We have such a similar sketching process. I also tend to draw tons of tiny thumbnails with notes next to them - my sketchbooks are not beautiful spreads of almost-finished pieces.

drawing always has been a passion of my mine. and art just doesnt really love me back. even so. i work hard practice day and day out. however my art never improves.. can you critique my art pls i just need a pros point of view

@@pogz1 Practice needs to be focused and intentional to work at its best efficiency. I don't know what your practice looks like, but drawing every day doesn't necessarily mean you will improve if you draw from imagination without reference all the time, or draw the same thing every time. Not saying you are doing that, just giving examples of how drawing isn't always good practice just in itself :) Try and pin point what you want to improve exactly (anatomy, lighting, composition, perspective...etc...) and then try to find some tutorials on those topics! Work from reference, study other artists' work, do some life drawing, do studies from life, study from art books and watch RUclips videos! Learning intentionally and in a structured way is the best way to keep going forward ^^ Best of luck!

This is definitely the type of thing I wish I could see more of by the artists I love, although I understand why it isn't as common as we would like. This type of content is very time consuming and effort intensive, so many artists either don't know how, can't afford to, or don't have the time to create content like this. Even I would love to do it more often, go more in-depth and be able to teach my process to others more, but that would all take me so much time I would have little left to do everything else my business and practice ask of me, including creating art. It's a delicate balance to strike. But I am super happy to get such a good response to this, I'm so glad it is enjoyable and inspiring content ^^
I always love how you share your working progress and the use of a sketchbook , this time I am triggered how you use Procreate in combi with google images / your sketches and wondered where / how you learned to use Procreate this way as this part interests me a lot because it would help me in my work too but I am really old school and it’s difficult to just find this particular part in the world of Procreate courses if you know what I mean 😉 really appreciate your open mind of sharing and I love your artwork and imagination 👌
Hi Debora, I completely understand being frustrated with learning Procreate, I myself don't know very much about how to use it either, but I have some basics from knowing a little about Photoshop already. If you are interested in learning more about the type of techniques I use in this video, I would recommend looking up "basic photobashing in Procreate" videos, they will teach you this type of process more in depth than I ever could. My version of photobashing is very, very, VERY basic, because I am not trying to create a digital painting, I am only trying to very roughly visualise my pieces. I basically pick images I like, and import them into a Procreate canvas. I then erase any elements of the picture I don't need, and resize and modify the remaining elements to my liking. I do a tiny amount of recolouring by playing with saturation and opacity but that is the extent of my process in Procreate :)

Haha, I feel ya! Trust me, I truly never thought I would ever have that kind of patience either. I'm not a super patient person at the best of times, so I am a little baffled that I am now able, even willing, to work this way. It's funny how we can evolve in directions with didn't think were us.
Any tips for getting out of an art rut? I have a solid idea that I’m happy with but can’t seem to translate it onto paper. It just always looks weird and not quite right
That’s exactly how I used to work too, and I never really thought I’d have the patience for my current process, but it turns out I love it 😊 so long as you enjoy what you do that’s all that really matters!

Hey there :) I’m afraid I had to private a bunch of videos because a company put some copyright strikes on some of them and threatened to get my channel shut down if I didn’t make sure I didn’t mention them anywhere else. Sadly that anatomy video was one they striked and they refused to remove the strike even when I offered to remove the segment where I talked about them 😔 That means that that video is lost, since I can’t afford to have backups of all my RUclips videos. I’m really sad about that one in particular, I spent so much time on it 😫 I’m sorry! The others will slowly go back up as I check all of them but sadly some are gone for good 😣

Haha, I feel ya! Trust me, I truly never thought I would ever have that kind of patience either. I'm not a super patient person at the best of times, so I am a little baffled that I am now able, even willing, to work this way. It's funny how we can evolve in directions with didn't think were us.

That’s exactly how I used to work too, and I never really thought I’d have the patience for my current process, but it turns out I love it 😊 so long as you enjoy what you do that’s all that really matters!
Not sure you'll get around to seeing this but I noticed you took down some of your videos. You had a video of anatomy resources that I constantly referenced but now I no longer have access. Hey there :) I’m afraid I had to private a bunch of videos because a company put some copyright strikes on some of them and threatened to get my channel shut down if I didn’t make sure I didn’t mention them anywhere else. Sadly that anatomy video was one they striked and they refused to remove the strike even when I offered to remove the segment where I talked about them 😔 That means that that video is lost, since I can’t afford to have backups of all my RUclips videos. I’m really sad about that one in particular, I spent so much time on it 😫 I’m sorry! The others will slowly go back up as I check all of them but sadly some are gone for good 😣
