I almost couldn’t stay in my seat at the level of adrenaline that was pumping through my veins watching this epic adventure. I had to step away a bit, calm down, and then come back to watch hoping my poor heart could take it.
Gorgeous trail isn't it? Great smallmouth, walleye, and muskie fishing as well. Need to explore downstream around Ivanhoe/ Austinville/Foster Falls if you haven't already. BTW it's pronounced Gay lacks!
Had the chance to ride the Galax to Fries section yesterday for the first time and it won't be the last. So beautiful and so well-maintained. Tim from the New River Outfitters ran our shuttle for us. As you described, he is a great guy. The New River Side Deli had a change in ownership about 2 months ago and they are planning some major updates in terms of products carried. They plan to eventually put fountain drinks in. The bacon cheeseburger seems to have suffered somewhat in the management change; ours was OK but nothing to write home about. The club sandwiches that we bought there and ate out the trail were outstanding, helped considerably by the wonderfully fresh and ripe tomatoes. There are plenty of opportunities to picnic along that section of the trail. There are also a number of pit toilets. We did not see any water fountains but we had brought plenty of our own water. Lots of bird activity, the wildlife sightings were limited to one deer and a box turtle. The tunnel was cute and short. The river was low but still saw a number of folks enjoying the fishing and tubing opportunities. And, if you are in Fries on a Thursday night, and you are a fan of acoustic Southern Appalachian music, they have an acoustic music night at the historic Fries Theatre that is not to be missed. Concessions open at 6, music from 7 - 8.
Just watched this gotta say fly fishing........that river ....BUT the best part was Adventure wifee bike shuffle forward to take pic in tunnel...AWESOME...lol. Be safe my friend
Great video. Thanks for taking us along. I heard on another video that the locals call that place "Freeze" in the winter and "Fries" in the summer.🤣😂🤣 Yes, those were recumbent trikes. Most models are expensive, but super comfy. I think many more upright riders would use them if they test rode them at a shop. No more balancing, no more wedge jammed up where it does not belong!😂 Ha! Loved your coulrophobia warning! Was that odor creosote? I don't drink or I'd send you an appreciation card. That brewing place looks really cool.
I will be right outside of galax in a few days. Trout fishing friday and samllie fishing saturday & the wife and I Biked that trail along chesnut creek last year. very nice area. My buddy ha s acamper on the river just a few mile up from Fries.
Loved the music and drone shots at the end. Also enjoyed your commentary during the bike ride. I'm planning my own trip with ebike and dog trailer. This looks like a very doable trail for my plans.
I appreciate a rail to trail system that maintains the shoulders, make a ride easier. Interesting views as I’m looking at maps in gaiagps while you ride
Thanks Jim. A byproduct of this trip is that my wife made me get the Zoleo. We had no service and no communication with family. I just got it and I think it's going to be great.
I grew up 1/2 my life in Galax, Va. and traveled many times between Galax and Fries.....I have fished all the river between the two towns and much of the river between Galax and Independence, Va.. It is beautiful country but unfortunately work opportunities in Galax and Fries are limited..especially for younger folks. A lot of retirees settle in and around Galax.
Thought I had the wrong channel when I saw the word camping in the title. You're becoming quite the professional youtuber with these back to back hour long videos. It's spelled Fries as in French Fries so that's how I'm pronouncing it. Only down side of the video was you kept reminding me of my ex wife. Everytime you'd say flat and well maintained 😮😅😂
For you, I know that secretly anything under 17 minutes (the professional RUclipsr video threshold) makes you sad. These hour long Adventure Steve epic saga's, will help you pass the time as you you continue to deliver the goods to keep America stocked. Roll on Patriot!
Thanks Doug. This trip was originally a planned fishing/camping trip but changed when my buddy succumbed to the China virus. At my camp I saw and heard a lot of big fish jumping. What were these fish? Fries would be an awesome little community to live in. We loved it.
I carried an extra battery for my bike. I had the ability to recharge her battery in my van if necessary but it wasn't necessary. Weather only allowed us the one day to ride. It's an awesome place.
@@myadventureoutdoors 👍. Grandson and I went camping (glamping) this past weekend, and he took his ebike (RadExpand5) along. I charged his battery off of my EcoFlow Delta 2. Luckily, I had the inverter generator along to recharge the EcoFlow, which was tasked with running the portable fridge.
@@myadventureoutdoors Yep, between the 3 of our ebikes (which all use the same model battery) we have 4 batteries. What the grandson needs to do is pedal more, throttle less. 🤪
Easy w/ the music Jerry Brockhiemer

From now on, you are signing a waiver before watching my vids.
Supid Covid... I hate missing the trip. Of course, my brother, the infantryman, counseled me that "You only know it's covid if you test."
I hate to tell you this but she was WAY better to snuggle with in the van.

The smell coming through the tunnels is stuff they use to keep the wood from rotting...I believe. You'll smell it going through most of them.
10-4 thanks. Definitely a powerful petroleum smell.

Mack, they renamed Galax to Adventure Steve-ville so don't get confused. Good luck on the fishing.

You will LOVE this trail. I'm hoping to go back.

Local here. It's pronounced Freez.
@@dougscamo2032 10-4. Learned something new today. Always a good thing.

It is pronounced freeze...not fries!
Im walking distance from that tunnel the trail splits the property i grew up on where my mom lives still.
You are lucky to live in such an awesome place. I'll stop in for a beer next time I'm on the trail.
Definitely looks like a great trail to ride, and a quiet campground. Did you have something handy to charge the bike batteries with if needed?

If you are going to do a lot of that kind of fun, you might end up needing an extra battery for each bike.

That is a wastewater treatment plant for fries not a water treatment plant for Galax.
Thanks for that info. I didn't know.
I hate clowns too.
