Been watching all your videos lately and your inspirational love of photography has aligned with my recent passion for landscape photography. I purchased a Pro-10 printer and began printing this week. It really is rewarding. Keep making your videos!
Nigel, i prefer the second image...the one you where not sure about. I like the sky on the right to be less bright (less blown-out - I know it is not really blown-out but it looks like it) and i like the cloud bank being burned orange on the right en grey on the left side. I took my Canon Pro9500 Mark II printer out of the basement...so stop inspiring us to print out....otherwise i will start to print again🤣 Thanks for this vlog, great work. Regards, Ben

Hi Nigel, with the luminosity and colour range masks I use the O key for the red overlay and then move the sliders. Same idea but some may find it easier to see which parts of the image are being included or excluded. Love both images. Thank you for talking about the simulate paper, which was something I mentioned to you. When you turn that on sometimes you would not bother printing the image.

It's odd that I never notice the spots until I have posted or printed the image! Great tutorial on using WB beyond the initial basic adjustment. I really hadn't considered using it during local adjustments so I'll give that a try. Thanks Nigel. Well done as always.

The reason I like your videos so much Nigel, is because you show the end to end process, including the actual process of printing! I agree that printing is important, I just wish it was less of an expensive faff! :D Being in this middle ground between hobbyist and trying to sell my work is a real pain. The amount of paper and ink I've gone through to get vaguely acceptable results just depresses me, especially when it's only an A4 printer, so probably too small to try to sell, and you don't do enough of it so heads clog up, wasting more paper and ink. Lab printing is great, but you don't get the immediate feedback. Colour management is a dark art, which you've mastered, and it's good to get the pointers!

In my review of this video on "white balance," I realize it wasn't just about WB, but about your intuitiveness to see the dynamic "color contrasts" that the green created for the overall photo. As a watercolor painter and landscape photographer, I run into this quit often with dynamic lighting situations. Warm/cools - color contrasts - harmonious lights/darks - all, help contribute to making that dynamic image. I'm always interested in what you leave out to see just how you came up with your compositions and than, what you choose to emphasize with the rest of your Lightroom pallet. Nicely done Nigel. Joseph

This video is of great interest to me Nigel as you accept the sky for what it showed on the shoot (that's what I like to convey also). In camera club circles, judges have a real dislike for blown highlights and spend a lot of time telling us to work within the histogram. I don't always agree with them. Yet you make no mention of this. Your finished prints look just "perfect" to my eyes.
Hi Bob - blown highlights don’t always matter - especially when shooting closely towards the sun. There are lots of examples of amazing photos (just take a look on Instagram) like that! Ignore the judges - often they have set guidelines and photography is art! And should have no guidelines
Really useful seeing you work through this. About 10% of males have colour-blindness issues... I have it significantly in the red/green parts, therefore I could see very little (tbh... NONE) difference except where the tones changed. I've never worked out a good way around this except "ask my wife".... which has its limitations! Thanks for your honest contribution

Another very informative vlog Nigel and it is amazing how much the look & feel of an image can change with the various tweaks that can be applied in the develop stage. Whilst this has a particular focus on white balance, do you follow a routine when working through the panels in the develop module or does it vary from image to image depending on what you see as needing the more immediate attention.
I just go from the top down - which is how lightroom is set up to be used. And then iteratively go back through to get the image I like. One key thing I forgot to mention is ensure that you leave and have a cup of tea and then come back as you can have image blindness!
Hi Nigel, a step sideways from white balance but seeing as you have the colour checker I was wondering if you have colour profiled your cameras? I have 4 "generics", blue sky, shade, cloudy and bright overcast all taken about midday. Applying one of them rather than the adobe standard makes for a far more natural starting point ready to apply colour balance as you have splendidly just described :-)
That trees/water image is sick, Nigel. I just spent all night editing some of my work including landscape-type stuff. Color/tones/white balance/gradients play a huge part in a lot of the work I've been doing recently. Funny to see this video on the topic. Do you personally care about shooting at a specific kelvin? Ever since getting my D800 in 2013 or so I just shoot basically everything in auto-white balance. There just is so much ability to fine tune after the fact that unless you need consistency across multiple images it just hasn't been necessary to me for the work I do. Modern digital cameras are so amazing.

You have a great printer, but what printer would you recommend for someone on a small budget? I have a really cheap all in one printer, but want to change it so that I can print my images.

Great informative video. Up until this moment I was only messing around with Camera Raw (and I still only edit in Photoshop as I don't like the way Lightroom is set out) and doing some minor adjustments before finishing in Pshop and my skies were bad, always bad. I had no idea about the Range in vignettes either. I just did two practice files using these techniques and I'm hooked! Thank you Nigel, liked and subscribed!

Hi! Nigel , Great ! Photography, thanks for sharing . My question : I do not print my images but send them out . On the finished edited image in lightroom , i'm at a loss on how to add the proper white borders on either Vertical or horizontal images. Sending images out for printing or to a Web page . I'm fairly new to lightroom ( beginner ) . I have been watching you since last September getting into Landscape photography . I had an accident in early Oct.2018 keeping me from getting out and applying some techniques you exhibited on your RUclips blog. I really like your approach on landscape photography . I look forward in see many more RUclips episodes . So can offer any suggestion in applying white borders to my images in setting up a template. Can never get a happy result from using split toning, so much so, that I deselected it from the menu, I have already used your Q1. 2. 3, 4, suggestion over all my folders, and like the way this works, maybe its time to have another go using your method with split toning, more practice needed. (as my driving instructor once said as we left the road.)
You are using the Canon Pro 1000 (which model is it? I keep seeing two listed, one costs about GBP 1000, the other is nearer GBP 500) I suspect that you will also be using the genuine dye's and if so, can you give an idea of what it costs (just a rough idea) for an average A4 print, including your paper, inks etc. thanks - I am trying to work out if it is worth it for me to upgrade my Canon printer to be able to print up to A3, or simply use some of my local print shops which are actually very reasonable. There soon won't be any need for cameras and photography. Wait until 5G gets up and running, you will probably be able to use Google Earth as a "Live" program, head off using it to go and grab a high resolution shot in real time, then import it into your photo software and change all of the stings adjustments and filters etc. then print it out and no one will know any different. We are already half way there with the editing software
i dont know if some of your viewers know, be careful in printing not to double profile, have your profile set in lightroom or wherever you print from, and have your printer set to no colour management or you end up with prints that are twice as dark as you see them on screen and normally over saturated and colour casted, i found out the hard way :)

Thanks for kind words. I shoot on a fixed kelvin for a particular set of images so can compare easily. Usually just set on cloudy. 👍
Yeah I guess that makes sense to use a fixed preset if you want to see actual changes in the temperature of the light outdoors from image to image.

Best to do border in photoshop. Just add a canvas border

Just need to up the saturation first and then reduce after happy with colour. It needs to be subtle... good luck

Could you have gotten the same result using the HSL sliders instead of adjustment brushes, ranges, white balance and tint?
Loads of ways to be similar results. Hsl slider is global across all images (of that colour) so wouldn’t work quite as planned
