- This video is part 1 of the Prabalgad-Kalavantindurg trek. I will upload the videos of both forts soon, along with guidance. We completed both forts in a single day.
Brief history:
This fort was likely built to protect the areas of Panvel and Kalyan, which were prominent ports at the time. When the Mahuli Treaty was signed, the North Konkan region fell under Mughal control, but Adil Shah still had direct control over it.
Later, in 1656, when Shivaji Maharaj took over the Jawali region, Muranjan came under Maratha rule and was renamed Prabalgad. In 1665, according to the Treaty of Purandar, Prabalgad was one of the 23 forts handed over to the Mughals. Kesharsingh Hada was appointed as the fort in-charge. When the treaty was broken, the Marathas attacked Prabalgad, and Kesharsingh was killed.
After the fierce battle, Shivaji Maharaj displayed his famous humanitarian side by allowing a safe passage for Kesar Singh’s mother and child to a secure place. It is said that Shivaji Maharaj was magnanimous in victory and did not take revenge on the soldiers who had fought so hard against his army.
Our Trek Duration:
1. We started from Pune at 5 AM and reached the base village at 7 AM (via the Pune-Mumbai Expressway).
2. We started the ascent and reached the Prabalgad Machi area by 9:15 AM.
3. After breakfast, we started the trek towards Kalavantindurg Fort and reached the top by 10:30 AM.
4. After exploring the top, we started descending and reached the gap between both forts in 15 minutes.
5. If you want to do the Prabalgad Fort trek as well, you don’t need to descend to the Machi area. Instead, take the straight path towards the Prabalgad trek start. It takes about 30 minutes to reach the Prabalgad trek route.
6. Ascend to the top of the fort. We reached the top by 12 PM. On top, there is a single jungle trail leading to the North point (Kalavanti viewpoint) and the South point (Borichi Sond & Kal Buruj).
We went to the South point first, which is the right trail when you reach the top.
7. On the way, we saw a few structures of old buildings in the jungle. It’s a bit eerie while going to the South point. It's better to have a group-this route is not recommended for solo trekkers or just two people. The distance is about 3+ km, so it takes 1.5 to 2 hours to explore and return to the midpoint.
8. Then, we went to the North point to view the Kalavanti Pinnacle. On the right side, you can see Chanderi Fort and Malang Fort.
9. We started descending the fort at 3:30 PM and reached the base village by 6 PM.
Note:
1. Since the top of Prabalgad Fort is a jungle area, it’s safer to reach Prabalgad Machi before sunset.
2. For the final rock patch, locals from Prabalgad Machi set up climbing ropes and a rope ladder after 7 AM, charging Rs. 30 per person (a good deal). If you have climbing experience, you can try free climbing, but it’s risky.
3. While doing the trek, take caution if you have a fear of heights or any medical conditions, as the climb can be dangerous. The stairs' exposure to the valley makes the trek quite difficult.
