    what is the meaning of "solo climb" in context of via ferrata? Withouth protection?

    • @ZenHikingSwitzerland
      @ZenHikingSwitzerland  3 года назад +805

      Hi, I feel some people are a bit confused about the term "solo" in reference to climbing.
      Very simply put:
      "Free Solo" = no ropes, no protection
      "Free Climb" = ropes, no additional climbing aiders
      "Solo Climb" = alone, ropes and gear are allowed

      It's not easy to climb those mountains with some heavy equipment like a rotary hammer drill and an engine generator, to drill all those holes, to fix rungs and huge ladders, while hanging over the void. Plus, they thoroughly check the fixtures on a regular basis, to make sure that it stays safe over time.

    WHOW! What a ride! Beautiful scenery, excellent climbing, BUT: Who the hell drilled this sh..., placed these hooks and all that stuff?! Must have been some crazy people! Overall it seems to be quite safe this way, but still ... got to know your stuff. Oh, and by the way: Great video too!

    Amazing! I wish I didn't have a fear of heights so I could do some hikes I fear in the U. S.

    Bellissima via ferrata, complimenti, bravo! Ottime anche le riprese, panorami mozzafiato, forse un po' lungo il montaggio, ma capisco che era lunga anche la via😄 Discesa invece per via normale? Ciao, e ancora bravo!

    Excellent video showing in details your route...a stupid question: who is placing these ropes and steel bases in order this route to be accomplisable?

      Some very ballsy people established the route in 1998, and since then revise the cables annually before opening up in spring. The work is done by rock climbers as far as I know.

      Within the already quite ballsey climbing/mountaineering community, there's an even ballsier sub group of often unsung legends that put up first ascents, clean and equip new lines, maintain them and write the guide books. Its a small neiche of people, all super committed to their passion

    I’ve been watching more climbing vids here because, thanks algorithm, but I digress. I could never, and would never try any type of climbing. But here at 1:59 I said to myself, I could MAYBE see myself doing something outfitted with ladders like this. Thought about it while continuing to watch. Then 2:19 happened and I shot my previous statement down immediately. Those few seconds of him walking, I could feel myself, as in a dream, just fall right off. But kudos to all who do this. Intriguing for sure.
    As for those who installed those ladders and rungs everywhere…that is absolutely wonderful. I’ve always wondered how one gets rebar rungs like in the video to stay secure. Is there epoxy involved? I assume a hole needs drilled out first. Can you imagine trekking everything needed for this? Power tools, bits and materials. I’d love to know how they did it and how long it took.
