    I moved to UAE when Dubai was just Deira. Yes, they built the city around one highway, Sheikh Zayed Road. Everything else was an afterthought, hence, you get this suburb setup in the middle of city core.
    It does feel souless because it’s not built for the people or connectivity. It’s made to show the buildings.
    But it has a different kind of wow factor. It does feel futuristic at times.

    I lived in Dubai my whole life and always thought these things were weird, and how if you live on one side of the highway, without money for ubers, overpriced taxis, and your parents don't have or can't drive, you are stuck there, with no way of crossing the high way unless you go to a tram station, and use it as a pedestrian crossing. Now being older, living in North America, I can bike, use public transport, or walk anywhere I need to. This was impossible in Dubai. The stereotype of living in Dubai means you are rich is very much a fallacy. We were broke, our parents had no jobs, and the economy was shit, but we were never given support, the UAE permanent residents, i.e the locals, were given all government resources, support, loans to start failing companies, and everything they needed. They did not have to pay for electricity, water, or any other utilities, and if needed, could ask the government for a job and be placed at a random job just for them to not do their job or do it half-assed. Most of them are obese or diabetic and it's clear to see why. The corrupted, greedy government is slowly being discovered by the rest of the world as time passes. Of course, it's amazing if you have money, buy the biggest villas, fast cars, amazing restaurants, tourist attractions, whatever, but its not a safe or good or happy place to live, study, or grow up, take it from me and the rest of my friends who have graduated a shit school system only for them to want to attend Canadian and American universities. You cannot speak out against the government, and those that do are either deported, sent to jail, or never heard from again. There is modern-day slavery in the immigrants and ex-pats that are coerced or forced to work there only for them to be paid nothing, live in group homes, and get their passports revoked. Workplace "accidents" happen commonly, either suicide or bad safety. Working in 45-50c heat from the hot morning to the humid night. It is one of the worst places to live, and for those thinking of visiting or going for tourism, I suggest taking your money elsewhere, you will only see the facade of a country sucking all those that live in it dry. Ordering food delivery was also terrible, workers pay for their own accidents, work so long in the heat, even during Ramadan, while fasting, while being Muslim, still working, and on top of that, tips wouldn't go to them. They had a mass protest/walkout where thousands of motorcycles flooded the streets in protest. Most of those were sent or deported back to their countries or fired. In Canada, most minimum wage jobs are taken by students and young people, in Dubai it's just Filipinos and Indians, or other cheap labor. No rights, no freedoms, no justice.

    • @REDnBLACKnRED
      @REDnBLACKnRED Год назад +64

      Fishermen and farmers have never built 'cities', they've built towns and villages. The complexity of urban planning for actual cities is far more exponential. And like the video points out, Dubai was not a result of efficient urban planning. Some of the most liveable cities in the world such as Amsterdam and Copenhagen also have some of the best urban planners involved.

    • @user-lv6rn9cf8m
      @user-lv6rn9cf8m Год назад +11

      That's the thing. Government/politicans shouldn't be involved generally. Cities should grow organically. That's the main reason many "modern cities" suck - politicians have tried to detail plan instead of just doing a general city plan and then sit back and let everything happen. Politicians and traffic engineers: stay out of things you don't understand.

    True but with some nuances.
    The Emirate of Dubai is building a waste water treatment system to eliminate the orange trucks from the city, besides the system will recycle the water for irrigation systems for locally produced food. Speaking of that, there are more and more projects focused on that, many big supermarkets have a great selection of local fresh products.
    Transit is an issue, specially of you live outside the JBR to Downtown line. But the Metro connects the suburbs of Deira, where most migrant workers lives, to key places around the city, employee transportation is further helped by the use of shuttle service provided by employers departing from the nearest metro station.
    The government is slowly putting more laws in place to guarantee workers rights and tracks down those companies who disrespect the laws. Interesting fact but most of the companies/individuals that mistreat their migrant employees are migrants themselves. Rich Indians are the ones that fly their own people to the gulf countries and slavenize them.
    It’s all about how you see things, the city grew too fast and little to no attention was given to basics, like how to deal with waste water, flow of people, etc. Remember that European cities had centuries to evolve to what they are now, and American cities, that are much younger have in some level the same issues.
    Brasilia, a city built from the ground up in the 60s is just a nightmare when it comes to some key aspects that makes a city more docile to it’s residents. My grandma’s neighbor would leave home at 4:45 to get to work at 8 by public transport. The poor woman would get home at 7PM.

You should go to Pakistan and see the situation, people can't earn anything because there are no jobs and sometimes its even more unfortunate because they have payment insecurities even after getting work. The scenario is much more terrible in their own country that's why they decide to go to Dubai.

    I mean the bus infrasture is pretty good I have used it regularly as a residence and in conjunction with the metro (which is very new, made in 2009 and is still expanding) it's a pretty good system. The metro and bus fares are cheap especially if your a student compared to most other countries. I know its not the best in the world but its pretty damn good. The buses are always on time and are extremely clean. The metro is extremely efficient , bus transfers from and to metros are free and there is generally a bus stop for every 5-10 minute walk. I'd say its pretty damn good not perfect.
