The Father of modern Singapore is LKY, but Dr Liu Thai Ker is the architect of modern Singapore, he was the chief planner of our public and urban landscapes, without his guiding principles, our public housing would not be what it is today. There are many brilliant men and women who had contributed to this tiny island nation. Many more still are continuing the work today. I would give credit to the lesser known Lim Kim San instead. He was the one who build the initial batch in record time, achieving 10 year plan in one year. Without him, HDB would not have made it's initial impact and then grow from there. And he did this while refusing any pay with the rational that without pay, no one can boss him around. So, he can focus on doing what he wanted to do, help the poor to have proper housing.

Another controversial feature that Westerners have a hard time grasping is the racial quotas in public housing, because LKY realised that left to people they will only prefer to live among their own people rather than mingle with people from other races. this prevented segments of housing in Singapore to be dominated and/or segregated by race, and is an essential fabric of fostering racial harmony in Singapore. Children go to neighbourhood schools with kids from all races, skin colors, languages and cultures. Thus, the hope is they are less discriminatory against their fellow citizens as they grow older.

I don't think you understood OP's context at all. In Western countries (including USA, UK and other European countries), such racial quota regulations would have been seen as a violation of freedom. That is why you get "Chinatowns" in all these countries. Even in Singapore, we have a Chinatown legacy left behind from British colonial times. So before you blindly jump in to defend your European reputation as a cosmopolitan region, spend a bit of time for research and thinking first.
But as a Singaporean, I am glad to be force-fed racial integration. It makes it easy when I have to live and work abroad. And for all your claim that Europeans don't see race, I've had my fair share of racism when working and traveling there. So meh.

Depends on how much the races will be "diluted". I think the "ghettos" or too high concentration of certain race/ ethnic is not attractive to residents in their country. We have examples in my country with gypsies. They can build their illegal housing, sometimes whole village near your house, and you are basically powerless, because noone wants to deal with it. That´s why I think above mentioned quota, that would actually dilute families into society they chose to live in, is good thing. The policy of 99 year lease for apartment/houses and the government 90% of the land is brilliant actually--- of course not applicable everywhere. Singapore is an island/city state and has very limited resources so they need to have a tight control or else big corporations will be running those housing complex and would spell disaster. Also, having the government control the housing and owning the land will prevent corporations running wild with real estate prices thus making it unaffordable for the citizens. Good example is Hong Kong, US and capitalistic countries.

Necessary maybe, "brilliant" is difficult. It didn't fix housing, it kicked the problem down the road. People essentially paid the price of full apartments for a rental, and the government convinced people both locally and internationally that government flats = home ownership. The full price gave the government capital to quickly finance large amounts of flats that led to a construction boom.
What happens when the leases expire, as they are now? Either the government pays the exorbitant expense of buying them back or giving them new flats, or 70% of the population is slowly going homeless.

I am not a Singaporean but I have lived in Singapore (approaching a decade next year). I love Singapore and used to work in New York before and I hated it and chose to relocate here and have never regretted my decision. Safety, security, peace and communal harmony in this country is unrivalled. There is complete freedom to do what I want as long as I abide by the laws of the land and I have no issues with that. Some may argue that the laws are strict but if that’s what it takes to achieve peace of mind in this country, then that is acceptable. I can sleep at night without worrying that I might get pushed into the subway tracks (why? Because the MRT is accessible only via doors that open only when the train is stationary). I can sleep at night knowing my kid is safe in school and no nutcase will try to harm him (cos gun laws are tough). I can sleep at night knowing my wife can go to work without being catcalled or molested (cos there are cameras everywhere and every other person on the road is a militarily trained reservist). I am born and raised in Hong Kong, and I can attest to the fact that Hong Kong city planning and urban policies are atrocious. Grid style streets and blocks that made for horrible natural ventilations (The global heatwave now sucks!), Lack of trees, lack of effort by the government to drastically improve housing policies in the midst of a housing crisis and only result in building more private houses, lack of “hang out” places for the community unless you travel to the commercial sector, further alienating people from one another. There are so much more.

      @ArchOfWinter 2 года назад +10

I'm also from HK but I wouldn't say the grid style street are the issues with ventilation. Its the huge blocks of base structures that house shopping malls and car garages, that's a problem even in non-gridded neighborhoods. Chicago, for example, is a grid style city and it just so happens to be aligned with the usual wind direction, making it very windy.
The early generations of public housing designed by proper architects were pretty good (aside from the unit sizes and a little too much concrete). Hallways has lots of airflow. Still these have lots of spaces for walking and gathering. If they used green parks rather than paved ball courts, they would be amazing. Shops that opens to the outdoors. Each very unique. But as cost cutting and standardization happens, the typical cross shape became the norm. Well shaded outdoor shopping arcade with airflow got replaced by the giant superblock mall, parking, bus terminal combo. While modern estates has hangout spots, it sucks that most are all technically shopping centers or concrete plaza with a few tiny trees sticking out.

Generally a couple buys a HDB brand new flat under the BTO scheme, they would be at least been working for a number of years & about at least 26 years old. The 99 yrs lease they can live there till 126 years old. But the average Singaporean lifespan is about 83. HDB policy is not only home ownership but also affordable good quality subsidized house where u can raise your family and focus on work / employment, it’s focus is on family unit and it’s unity. Even if you become a bankrupt nobody or bank can take away or re-possess your home. The HDB help built good family & social fabric which brings security, stability and progress for Sg.

Singapore is now at an inflection point when it comes to the success of its HDB policies; Firstly, they are currently in short supply and young couples must wait up to 6 years before they can move into their homes, this will likely have severe impacts on birth rates in the short term. Secondly, the Ang Mo Kio SERS exercise has triggered panic in Singaporean HDB home 'owners', who now realise that their homes are not "appreciating assets" as promised by the first to third generation of politicians, but can instead be recalled by the state at any time. If the government does not clearly communicate commitment to mitigate these issues, the ruling party will suffer greatly over the next few general elections. Your stock footage seems to not show the "typical" HDBs that aren't nearly as glamorous. With key characteristics like the void decks, surrounding coffee shops and such. Rather, a lot of those depicted are office buildings or hotels with lots of glass in the downtown area, or condominiums with their private amenities.

The architect of Singapore's economic strategy is the brilliant economist, Goh KS. Lee, the articulate one, sold the ideas politically, and successfully. The rest, the different ministers and CEOs, effectively implemented their strategies over the decades. The key idea was picked from Taiwan, land reform, which drives the Taiwan economy because it provided the badly needed social stability when things fell apart in many developing countries. Since S'pore has limited land, the pair reformed the air space, i.e. vertical public housing, to give every family a stake in the country and, in return, a vote for PAP. Where land is concerned, the market fails, and hence the need for the land acquisition act and public land banking. Where this good video did not address is the high cost of housing in one of the most expensive cities in the world.

Basically, with great power comes great responsibility. The SG government's unlimited control of the land was put into good use in homing its citizens. But also one must consider the costs that come with it. Which includes owning a home no more than 99 years and the tariffs on owning multiple properties.

    • @zeccy337
      @zeccy337 2 года назад +3

The tariffs on owning multiple properties is to discourage the rich from buying up multiple flats and renting it off, causing a shortage of apartments and leaving Singaporeans unable to secure housing.
I personally find the 99 year lease reasonable. Keep in mind that Singapore is a very tiny nation, land is extremely valuable and not having a time limit means the government won't have a mechanism to reclaim the land for other purposes.
99 years is such a long time it realistically won't matter but when the time comes, they'll just redevelop the land into other properties.
I know as a Singaporean it's hard to accept these limitations but keep in mind were a small nation, we have to make a lot of concessions

a deep life, proper growth, chances, air quality, no dispute with neighborhood....peace - these are the real prizes. also, one may point out "no war = peace" not true. do you live among a culture who believes shouting is what they must do? say..they have 4...5 occupants in that flat?
times it by erm..3, 4 units. plus 7 years. I tell you - "no war" isnt the only consideration. sometimes the "War" walk in openly FROM CHANGI, come to heartlands, and they scream, shout all through, even 2am..3am. it's not about "moving" because how can anyone "gamble for sure" if they keep letting these antics in?

A good documentary about housing in Singapore but you forgot to cover the darker side. Many Singaporeans were forced to give up their private land to the government for very little compensation. And some of the land acquired ended up not being used. There is also a conspiracy that the government were the ones who set kampongs (villages) on fire just to acquire the land. The Singapore government does not even care about preservation of culture as they only care about progress. Currently there is only one kampung left in mainland Singapore and the government wants to clear it for a school. The Singapore government has done many good things but they aren’t perfect. We can’t just forget that they have done pretty dark stuff.

The government should own the land. And rent it out in the form of Land Value Tax. The LVT profits should go directly to the citizens. Private citizens shouldn't have the right to buy up all of the land which is a limited resource, without compensating the rest of the people. This is especially important in a small state like Singapore.

    • @RK-cj4oc

@@RK-cj4oc if people who use the land are taxed high enough, the citizens who receive the tax, will have money for housing. Not only that, there will be so much housing to meet the demand because the people who build on the land will have incentive to make the most money on it. So instead of single family homes, everyone will have a place to live. If someone wants to live in a single family home and aren't rich, they can live in the middle of nowhere, where land is valued less. Regardless, the cost of renting will be so cheap, no one will care about owning a home like they do now. The incentive won't be there.

I thought in LVT, the government doesn't own the land. It is just taxed due to exclusive access/rights given. But the land is still owned by the common people. Government owning land implies that the government have the rights to what to do on that land. And can, for example, kick/remove people out even when they are perfectly paying the LVT.
But I'm really not an expert in this. I just read it in a comment on r/georgism. Please correct me if I'm wrong because I do really love the idea of LVT. Just need to execute it well.

Would you rather a government own the land, who you can more easily hold them to their responsibilities, or have a private company own the land, who may have worser motives in mind?
Because with how apartments are, no one person living there can own the land anyway, or they will essentially become that private company.
Unless you're going to have all the residents of that building form a private company just to own that land.

If one had a car in sing drove around that damn erp.. well one sees a lot of jungle open areas.. You see the government owns the land and regulates its use .. But scary was the park on the northern side watching freighters go by.. Friend told me what the hell are you doing walking on the sand?? he was sitting on the top of a picnic table...There are a lot of drug users here and they drop their needles.. Iwas like now you tell me.. I too sat on the picnic table.. Locals know their stuff.. Real life in sing.. I miss newtons circus..

Seriously you have less than a minute of actual HDBs (some of which is really nice). Nearly all the footage is of downtown.

The first reason why anything got done in the South East Asian city state that was once filled to the brim with mosquito and squatters was because they abolished and criminalized all secret societies and focused on enhancing enforcement of English common law. And they practically burnt down everything and started all over again.

When you get your first house you will be about 27. 99+27=126. I don’t think you will be living till that age in Singapore.

Everyone who bought state-built apartments are not home owners. We only lease it for about 99 years or less.

We can sell it to make a profit though. It’s half half in a way.
It’s not the perfect policy but better than most countries.

Would you rather rent an apartment or buying one with 99 yrs lease?

I'm pretty sure the government won't do something drastic after the 99 year lease, lest they anger a lot of Singaporeans. They still need votes after all
