I bought a battery powered zero turn, 42" with 6 each 60volt, 8 AH, with a bagger for $4,000. It's an awesome. I mowed around 3 acres and had 78% battery left.

Cordless electric push mowers are pretty much at cost parity with gas push mowers nowadays including the battery and charger. Soon the same will be said for commercial grade electric riding mowers.

I left after $30,000. I'm not anti electric. Whether a car, mower, whatever. As long as it's reliable, quality, easy to repair, including access to spare parts, and cost is similar or better. That mower's not even a consideration yet.

Can we please agree that electric equipment is not “green”. We still need to produce and recycle toxic batteries and the juice has to come from a reliable source as well. I can only justify this technology for it’s quiet operation and marketing potential.

8/8/21, Point well taken. I don't want an E-car or E-yard machines; if a customer stipulates in their contract what kind of equipment to use, you don't need their business. I have a Gravely ztx42 w/22hp Kohler that I use just for my property. Just the right size/price for my yard.

So let me see. I hear $32,000 for this machine. 12 acres. 200 lbs of batteries. Minimal maintenance, no fumes, quiet machine and maybe less fatigue. Ego Zero Turn. $6,000. 4 batteries. 2 acres. 2 more batteries is $1,000 plus tax. So that should be 3 acres total on 6 10mah batteries. To equal the Gravely without flinching for charging and simply changing out the batteries, we need 18 more batteries for the Ego. Close to $10,000 more just for the zero turn. So we are just under $20,000 for an Ego. Is it worth carrying 18 more batteries around all day if you have close to 12 acres to do most of the time? I have not seen the build of this Gravely Pro EV but my guess is it is very well constructed. That said, minimizing yanking batteries and having less downtime is attractive to me. I do not yet know how much each 50 pound battery costs. But I will. Thanks very much.

We can't agree because your knowledge is outdated.
We are very close to being able to get lithium from seawater and other sources very easily instead of mining for it. Also, there are countless other battery technologies that are better, cleaner and safer coming out very quickly, battery tech is exploding right now.
As far as lithium batteries are being recycled and they are building more recycling plants every day. Last year the largest lithium recycling plant in North America went into production.
About 20% of electricity in the United States is generated by renewable resources, and that is growing every single day. Myself I have solar panels, so I did have the initial investment, but my house is off-grid and powered by solar most of the time. For almost 2 weeks we have used no backup power. My backup propane generator, which will only be used a few hours a year during the winter months, is STILL more clean burning than coal or natural gas power plants.
      So no. We can't agree.

Problem is advancement in tech is happening so quickly. You invest 30k now and In 3-5 years they will probably be so much better you won't want to keep the 30k mower.

This is called indecisiveness and it gets you nowhere. Find what will work the best for you and stick with it. You don’t have to worry about what happens in 3 or 5 years, because the technology and pricing will be negligible and if used for commercial landscaping services, it will have been long paid for and served its duty. Focus on the current market at hand and that’s what you are competing with. If I were a commercial landscaper, I’d probably go with meangreen or gravely for their name alone and you’ll know they’ll have to account for you to keep good ties. Even then, any technological advances will and can be easily implemented into their platforms/chassis for little or negligible cost. Battery’s, Solar, Vibration Reduction Technology, AI, Power Management Systems, Interfacing, Motors, etc.

    • @oldplace2844
      @oldplace2844 Год назад

To be fair, this isn't new tech at all. The application is new, but it's the same tech we've been using for roughly 15 years. Battery life however, will not improve with the current chemistries. If you are wanting electric, might as well buy it now, because the costs will likely go up in coming years, not come down. Lithium itself is getting harder to get and as demand increase, so does cost. The biggest issue is the batteries. Physics is physics. Every battery has a cycle rating. Most usually sit around 1000 cycles for optimal operation, after which you will see degradation. Some are higher and some are lower, but that's about average. If you are fast charging it will reduce the cycle life. The upside with a mower is that you won't be using it during the winter (if you live in cold climates) and so save a lot of that cycle life.
The cost of replacement batteries is staggering however. Replacing the batteries will cost more than an equivalent gas or diesel engine. You can rebuild cells, but unless it is an experienced shop that uses quality cells, the results are often lack luster.

I won't believe 2000 charge cycles until I see it. What do the batteries cost and what % of mower cost are they? I've thrown away perfectly good cordless tools because a pair of new OE quality batteries cost almost the same as I could buy a new tool with 2 batteries and a charger. Battery powered tools have a history to overcome. I don't have any issue with battery powered cars or tools, but it's disturbing to me that they are being forcefully implemented with a one size fits all approach.

Sure, operating costs are low but repair costs are going to be insane. Batteries won.t last more than 3 years with the most gentle use and replacement costs will be obscene. When you discharge a battery to 10% of its initial charge battery life really tanks. 4 hours of run time is terrible for a commercial mower. These guys are banking that battery technology will get better to make this machine more attractive. That has not happened yet. And who is going to work on them besides the dealer? The sophisticated electronics that go into the motor drives are going to break and that is just a fact of life.

this guy didnt 100% know what he was talking about as far as run time, My electric mower is rated at 10 acres ( green works 52" stander) and runs 5-7 hours, I know thats a big range but it depends on how hard the electric motors are working. This mower rated at 15 acres should be capable of over 7 hours easily. also as far as longevity the batteries are going to give you 5 years of hard commercial use before they start under performing to the point you will want to replace, the rest of the mower needs almost no maintenance in that time frame. Btw my green works was only 13K and is great for commercial applications.

However I do believe gravely has lost their mind on bringing this product to market at this MSRP. I'm sure the cost to produce this machine is incredible still. But again, mean green, and smaller handhelds and push mowers have already been on the market for years and are seeing very little traction in the grand scheme of things. The only reason anyone is really picking these up is due to government regulations at this point. And 30k, thats an entire crew set up price for most contractors. It's cool.
