See this is why you make such great videos and content! You screw up a little, and instead of hiding it as a lot of "creators" do, you instead fess up and make a full video showing not only how you fixed YOUR issue, but how to correctly remove the base components on the lovely old HP Z820. You so friggen ROCK! I have an HP Z820 that has been sitting around years and honestly I don't need it. With two Z840s and two Dell Precision T7910/20s, I'm loaded down with dual Xeon, high-RAM, high-PCIe count workstations. I'm giving the Z820 to a friend as a server with Proxmox, 256GB RAM, TrueNAS Scale, NVMe, drives, yada. Oh and an HP Z440 spare I have for a 2nd node. He'll get use from it. I watched this video as I feel a need to disassemble the old Z820 and Z440, clean them, replace the thermal paste, and test before giving them to a good friend. You helped me with 1/2 of my task. :)
Next time try hydrochloric acid and burn the tabs off. 🤣Seriously I'm glad you did this first because I was considering taking an angle grinder to my Z420.
Muchas gracias!!!
I think you can get rid of the OROM screen if you disable legacy Option ROM, but then you will not be able to enter the Option ROM program in pre-boot if you need it for troubleshooting SAS controller.
some times using pliers and tin snips to alter things drastically reduces metal dust. Also, used to work in a place where they prototyped mainboards on the bench, and you would be surprised about the solder blobs/dust around stuff. Anyhow, that did not cause any trouble. Case hacking a bit myself to fi in a Supermicro 3.5" dock into a case, doing it before I build a machine in it first though...
I bent metal tabs out of the way rather than cut them because I might end up re-purposing case. Think I said before that cases that use drive rails for 5.25" drives vastly easier to deal with. Cutting is a no way back thing. iirc, IcyDock and some other vendors do 8 x 2.5" adapters for 15mm high drives in 2 x 5.25" drive bay. I've a different IcyBox adapter that will take three 2.5" 15mm high drives in a 5.25" bay and four slimmer drives whilst allowing plenty of air flow.
You can do anything, it's a matter of how difficult it is. I don't think using a standard ATX motherboard is going to be easy in this proprietary chassis and PSU.

Thanks for the kind words. Glad those machines will go to good use. They are great!

LMAO... the space is tight in these machines. Someone commented that using a dremel like tool would work better and I think I agree.

Thank you and congratulations on your Z820 purchase. I hope you enjoy it! :-)

yeah, that's ideal to do any mods *before* the build. thanks for the tips!
It's steel shavings. You should use strong magnet in plastic bag. Just unplug connections and remove HDD.
Thanks for the suggestion!

Art's messed up Z820 still looks in much better condition than my unmodified Z820. 😝
Thanks. Those are kind words. Thanks for watching!
You may need to take out the back panel of the workstation to remove any metal bits that may have fallen through.
Hmmm.... that's a good thought, and the OCD in me might not be able to ignore it now that you mentioned it.... dang it!!!! LOL Thanks for watching...
Can I put in another mainboard but still use all the fans etc?

so its not doable without custom mods@@ArtofServer
I share your pain in extracting the motherboard from the machine.
It is a tight fit and the board needs to be angled precisely to be taken out.
Yeah, I eventually figured it out. I don't recall the Z800 board being as difficult to remove as I've done that before. Thanks for watching!!
That was like watching a monkey with a foot ball. Love your videos, Thank you!
I don't know how to take that comment. But I'll heart this comment anyway! LOL
@@ArtofServer Ah, you know it's all in good faith... I'm just teasing you. Love your stuff.
