  • In 1948, at the dawn of the television, Mary Hartline dazzled the nation as the star of the hugely successful children's show "Super Circus". With her effervescent personality & blonde good looks, Hartline quickly became a network star; many would go so far as to contend that she was America's first female television super star. After "Super Circus" ended its ABC network run in 1955, she hosted "Princess Mary's Castle" , filmed at WTTW, Chicago's public television station. Mary retired from show business by 1960. She was born in Hillsboro Ill, on October 29th, 1926. She was married several times & lived in several states, but eventually retired to her hometown of Hillsboro Ill. She passed away in August of 2020.

Mary was a pioneer of early television, not just children's television, although that was where she would have her greatest influence. Sadly, pioneers are often forgotten even though they blazed the trail for the thousands who followed after them. So it is with Mary. Whether or not she realized it at the time, her talents and concepts helped to set the stage for many other TV shows to follow, both in commercial and public television. What she accomplished in the later 40s and throughout the 50s still echoes on to this day.

I had a big crush on Mary, even though at that time I was a 10 year old boy, to this day I have a thing for blondes.

Did Roy Orbison write this song for Mary Hartline?
