The Mercator has several problems. It's most accurate at the equator, but the further from the poles, the more distorted the projection. Hence, Greenland looks larger than Australia, while Greenland is much smaller, being almost 1/3 as big as Australia. Robinson projection has been used by both National Geographic and Rand McNally atlases for decades because there is less distortion at the poles. Whenever you take a sphere and present it on paper you're going to get distortion; it depends on what you want to be most accurate. Americans, especially politicians, prefer the Mercator because (a) it's familiar and (b) because it makes North America look huge and therefore implies its importance. Choosing to orient to the north is strictly arbitrary; take a mind trip and check out maps that orient to the south! Oddly, a lot of Aussies and Kiwis seem to like that! LOL! As a former teacher, I've noticed that kids who collect stamps and coins seem to be more geographically fluent because they want to know where the items came from.
Two things about this, 1) the kid at the end is still in school so he should know and 2) the most obvious problem is they kept asking Gen Zers and we all know they are a failed society.
Some countries look smaller or bigger because of the fact we're representing on a plain map something that is pretty spherical, thus all the real dimensin are deformed and not reperesentative
You need to see a real scale map. America on maps is bigger than most others. Real scale shows that Africa is MUCH bigger. Sad that they can't even name continents!
You're not too bright are you? They show you a handfull of the most inept they can find, out of hundreds of people asked. I promise you that I as an American, know way more countries than you do. I can name every country and who they share borders with.
@@airbrushdungeon So, You resort to insult now? So you brag at knowing countries... and? We are speaking of the majority not specific people who for whatever reason DO know. I lived 5 years in the States. Most people can't pinpoint any major city on a map!
@@Fallopia5150 Most people? Most of what people? Who have you asked about this? Sure, there are quite a few young people in America that don't know shit. That's because they've been to highschool and collage, which are nothing more than leftist indoctrination centers, promoting deviant sexuality and sowing racial division. They're way to busy learning to hate God, their parents, their country, their gender, white people, and capitalism, to waste any time on actual academics like History or Geography. It probably disoriented them that it's not from the typical perspective US maps are drawn from, obviously Asia is a continent not a country and the one lady said South Africa but pointed to the continent of South America. I think it's just disorientation and cherry picking to make fun of Americans, I tried out for AGT and came with an amazing guitarist who got called for a second audition; but neither of use got called for the televised auditions and they pretended like there was no real talent in our city. I saw a lot of talented people, I had gotten past 2 rounds in American Idol and was stopped in round 3 (round 4 is the celeb judges on TV) and an amazing singer got stopped at the same round but this was only 6 months or so before those auditions at AGT (same producer reviews tapes, same production company.)

No, it has to do with the polar distortion because it's using the Mercator projection. There are many other accepted map projections - Robinson, Mollweide, Gunn-Peters, Authagraph, etc. to name a few - that can be used instead, depending on what you want to emphasize. National Geographic and Rand McNally have been using the Robinson projection for decades. Americans tend to like the Mercator map because it makes North America look huge and therefore important.
for comparison Australia is way bigger then Greenland. Greenland: Approximately 2,166,086 square kilometers. Australia: Approximately 7,688,000 square kilometers. The Mercator projection distort this way.
