Hi Charles! This was the Wandering Vine pattern from Marguerite Porter Davison's book. When I did a video specifically on overshot, I featured this exact project! Here is the link to take a look - ruclips.net/video/NTDbBli2YI8/видео.html Just let me know if you have further questions! I'm happy to help!
New sub here. I just bought my first loom (old 4 shaft table loom 80 cm wide), not got it yet so I continue to study here on YT ;) and am looking for old books on weaving in thrift stores. Never tried or seen anyone weave, but my paternal grandma wove and I am using a wool blanket she made (she was born in the 1880's and died many years before I was born, but that blanket so soft and warm sparked something in me now that I am at the beginning my second youth ;) I have plenty of wool yarn for weaving, and thought I would use some of that getting familiarized with the loom and weaving, there are different thicknesses and several colours to choose between, but I have no idea of the thickness as numbering is lacking on the cones (might have fallen off) and I do not understand the 8/2 v 12/8 anyway (not sure if i got those numbers correct) so I want to ask, will yarn circa the thickness of a toothpick work as warp yarn or should I find something thinner for my getting to know the loom? PS. Thank you for the reed substitution chart link, that will come in handy later on when I start the towel project I have decided to be my first real weaving project.
Ann, congratulations on the new loom! I absolutely love the family connection - that's so special! Here's what I might recommend for you. If you are simply trying out the loom and getting a feel for it, don't worry about the exact numbering for the yarns. If you have the same size in a couple of colors, that's perfect. Your toothpick thickness should work just fine! As you look at how to space them in your warp, be sure to give a little air in between. I don't know if toothpicks have a standard width, but when I look at mine, I'd suggest maybe 10 epi, ends per inch. That should be a good spacing to allow you to try some plain weave and maybe some twill! When considering your warp, just keep in mind that the fiber needs to hold up under tension. So, give your wool a good tug. If it shifts or breaks, it may be old and you'll want to avoid that for the warp (you can definitely use it in the weft, though). Otherwise, if it feels sturdy, you're good to go! I'm looking forward to hearing more about your fabulous new adventure! Just holler if you have further questions!
@@annestrand6933 See, I learn something new everyday! Toothpicks have a standard size - got it! Yes, please! I would love to hear how it goes! I'm very excited for you! Have fun!
Can you talk more about the gorgeous overshot piece?
