  • The Dueling Grand National RMC. Do you prefer the Right or the Left side lift?
    Creation made with NoLimits 2.
The absolute latest theme park news: / insideamusement
"England's classic racing coaster, Grand National, turns into a dueling horse race. With new steel track, the coaster is smoother than ever, but features the familiar red and white colors that we all grew up with." #Blackpool #PleasureBeach #BPB
When making these I try to focus on realism, and think 'what would RMC do in this situation?'
If this transformation was even possible, I believe the one-track Mobius layout of Grand National would be turned into two separate tracks. The coaster offers two long rides due to how the layout is set up, and I do believe two-separate tracks is what the Rocky Mountain Construction Crew would do.
This was a tough one that took quite a bit of time and had me erasing and re-building multiple times, but very happy how it turned out!
The tracks duel throughout the length of this ride, offering very different ride experiences. They jockey for position three times throughout the length of the course, left to right or right to left, after all the twists and turns, your train ends in the same station as you begin.
Which do you prefer? Right or Left?
As always, this coaster was created using an overlay of the actual satellite image of Grand National at Blackpool Pleasure Beach. It follows the layout as exact as possible and features a 14-foot height increase from the current G.N. The hills follow a very similar height to was is already built, as this is generally what Rocky Mountain will do when revamping a ride. I hope you enjoyed the POV.
In reality this is extremely unlikely to ever happen, the issue I see with this ride getting an RMC transformation is the clearance to the train on the other track (As it is, you can high five the other train during the ride) , which is why if anything is ever done to this ride, I would guess it would likely just be a re-tracking and refurbishment of the same track we see today.
If RMC were to turn it into a steel-track conversion, I could only see them turning this into a single-track ride, similar to how RMC took Twisted Sisters/Twisted Twins at Kentucky Kingdom and made it a one-track ride instead of the two layouts that it used to be.
I hope you get your RMC soon UK coaster fans, but don't expect it out of this coaster in my opinion!

The Barrel Roll Downdrop and the back to back Stengel Dives for the right track, and the demented ejector and double down off the lift for the left track, it’s all so amazing.

A nice idea but vastly out of scale and a physical impossibility without building an entirely brand new ride - the Blackpool woodies have no footers, just a wooden foot in the sand. The only option is a full retracking while keeping the PTC cars, which were a bespoke build to be as light as possible due to the nature of the structure. A larger track stack and mid-span ledgers would transform the venerable classic into a ride likely better than new in 1935, while keeping the original profile. Heavier trains aren't an option and RMC is an impossibility. A very well made NL model though - love the station and surrounding park, very well done indeed. :)
Professionally I'm in close talks with a company that has done construction work for RMC, a company that is now one of the premier woodie refurbishment specialists (you'll likely not have heard of them but they've done a lot of work around the world, some on behalf of the big names, currently finishing off work on Thundercoaster in Norway). We've talked at length about the Grand National. My dream would be to be able to offer a full refurb to the PB but while there's a slim possibility at present, it might one day be possible. It's just my own dream however and the old adage "how long is a piece of string" applies...! It is in no way on the cards, but if I do find myself in a position to work with a company that could one day make an offer, I'd love to transform my old favourite to the best it's ever been while keeping the original profile.
Big Dipper would be the candidate for new trains, likely articulated 3-bench PTCs, however the same caveat regarding structure and footers applies. The standard modern cars are significantly heavier than the current cars, including the very bespoke PTCs put on the National in 2006.

I am bothered by one part, @3:22 where both coasters twist the same way. If this was built in real world then you just turned one train directly at the bottom of the other train, this just feels unsafe. To me it would feel better if the angles were reversed... look at Twisted Colossus at Six Flag Magic Mountain, how the trains turn in towards each other or out away from each other, but never the same way giving this kind of top to bottom sideways angle. Just my opinion.

It could only be an improvement, the national is so painfully rough you need traction when coming off.

its a cool idea but i wouldn't like it because i like the traditional roller coaster type stuff they use in the ride and i wouldn't see this happening but its a good concept!

This will get a gwazi treatment bc the structure is pretty bad from all these years just like gwazi

It would be #1 in the world of it was a mobius loop and had onkt half of the inversions. Still amazing.

I will be 100% honest and say that I am not a big fan of RMC coasters, I think it looks ugly with the structure exposed the way it is, I think it would suit somewhere like Thorpe Park Resort, But not in a concept like this at Blackpool Pleasure Beach especially to The Grand National. Think that if they did replace that coaster that it should be replaced with a new storyline coaster and not "The Grand National". I just don't think this type actually in my opinion works, but it would work in a Merlin Attraction. Anyways, cheers for sharing, have disliked the video for the coaster type and idea for Blackpool, but have Subscribed for more videos in the future. 😀👍

If this got the RMC treatment, the other RMC duelling hybrid, twisted collosus at six flags magic mountain would stand no chance against this

They need to revamp this coaster and do exactly this to it, before the thing just crumbles into a pile of rust or derails.
Tbh its rusty old accident waiting to happen

How? The wood is replaced every 7 years. It is perfectly safe.

I don't think BPB should RMC the grand national. Maybe if it would have to be taken down otherwise but unless that would happen it should stay the same.

This is fantastic, however I'd love it if blackpool pleasure beach would RMC the big one, I know they don't usually convert existing steel coasters, but if this was possible it would be the best ride ever made, apart from the first drop the big one is not great, and it's extremely rough now

badmoon rising22 RMC can’t convert steel coasters. The entire point is they convert old woodies. Not steel hypers.
