I never tried it this way. But I have propogated rose of sharon successfully by soaking the stems in willow tea and then sticking the cuttings right into the ground. I got a success rate of about 98 out of 100 cuttings and a beautiful hedge. We built a new homestead on a new property and im starting this all over again. Thanks for sharing your method. I might try both ways.
I am wanting to do willow tea now that I've discovered some willow on our property. Maybe it will work on our vitex/chaste trees, as this water method doesn't seem to work on them.
Thank you for this video, I didn't know they rooted easily and it was particularly helpful to learn that the oxygen in the water dissipates, now you have said it, it seems obvious. I have some cuttings in water and am going over to change the water now - and apologise to them : ) I also didn't know about the darker glass being preferable so, thanks again.
OMG you kid is so cute!! He reminds me so much of my son when he was that age (he's 2 now). He would say "up down" all the time and loved to close the dishwasher... usually while we were trying to fill it!
Thank you for posting this. I’m going to propagate my rose of Sharon hedges today to fill out my property line, eventually. I’ve had great success this year propagating my weeping willow tree for me and my brother to plant new trees.
Thanks for the easy instructions a friend has a "rose of Sharon" plant that i really love. ive been wanting to buy one for over a year now. But haven't been able to find a place that carried them So thanks for showing me how i can easily get a few ROS plants completely free 😊
I put my cuttings in water 3 of them and its been 3 weeks and no roots yet but its growing little leaf's on top and planted 5 on soil and peat moss with rotting hormone and all 5 are growing leafs thanks for the tip
Ive been doing mine like this and have had on and off luck. I’m gonna try doing an amber glass or darker cup, I’ve typically done mine in mason jars. I knew I was supposed to change the water and typically did twice a week or we’ll tried to but now I know why and will try to be more on top of it!! Also your son is adorable!!
Thank you for the information very helpful. I will pick from the main stem of the rose of my choosing. You are very informative and clearly spoken was very easy to understand you. Love your Son, he is so precious.
enjoyed your video, and your little one is adorable! Thank you for your information about the rose of Sharon!! so excited to get some starters off mime for christmas presents for my kids.xo
I have so many rose of Sharon's.. They're everywhere on one side of my yard. They just propagate themselves. They're even in my neighbor's yard. They're all over my neighborhood. When i first moved into my house there was 10 Bushes side by side and they were about 14ft tall and super bushy. At one point i guess they were popular for everyone to have that they have taken over.
Thanks so much for sharing this! I have been wanting to take clippings from my rose of Sharon but wasn't sure how. How long did you wait to plant it out doors after potting it? Thanks again for the information
Glad it was helpful! I think it's actually better to plant them sooner rather than later, but they can be held over the winter in pots indoors if that's how the timing turns out.
@@homesteadingatkookergehoft8131 I am in Eastern Oklahoma so we'll see how soon mine start to root! 😊 Thanks again for sharing I'll let you know how well it works out for me!
Once you put potting mix in, it's much more difficult to clean the stems and change the water. I would wait until there are good roots, then you could change the water one last time and add potting soil to slowly transition it to soil only.
I took some a while back from the newer growth and they're rooting well in water :3. Haven't had luck with the older wood. Also covered with a plastic baggy to prevent wilting and up the humidity :D.
Help! I didn’t watch this before I got my cuttings. I had some of the woody area but cut it off to a shorter branch at a node. Had them in water. They were starting to root and then started to rot. I am trying to save the cuttings I took so I put them in soil with myco plus. Any additional advice?
Does it matter if I am using municipal water which has chlorine added? I always wonder how that is affecting my plants. Loved the video. Very well explained!
I use municipal water for my cuttings. The chlorine probably helps keep down the bacterial load for a little longer than filtered water. One guy commented he adds hydrogen peroxide to his cutting water with great success.
Our water is city water with chlorine, too. Though I'm not a fan of chlorine in our drinking water, it probably helps keep bacteria down during this process rooting cuttings. So, I don't see it as a problem. Thanks!
No rooting hormones with this method. Only fresh water. Not all plants grow roots this way, but Rose of Sharon and even roses do well with this method.
You certainly could. I've done it at various times of the year with success. My favorite time is cuttings in spring, pot up once rooted, then plant in early fall to give some time to get a bit established before cold weather (remember, though, I live in Texas where our coldest months are usually January - March).
What time of year should I try your technique? I have a long beautiful row between my neighbors house and mine and very much enjoy the beauty and privacy of these fragrant flowers. I want to start another row at the back of my property.
Any time works. I've taken the cuttings at various times of the year with success. I would try now. If for some reason it doesn't work, you can try again in the spring. I hope it goes well for ya!
First off if you people don't like her boy then DON'T BLEEPING WATCH then !! Now back to my comment. I have been doing your method for about a month now and I dipped the stems in rooting hormone when I did put them in water. I change the water religiously about every 2-3 days with well water. How long does it take to get the roots long enough to be able to plant ? As I said before, I have been doing about a month now and I have a lot of rootlets but none big enough to really plant. Any help ? Thank you
I think it took mine a few months to develop roots long enough for me to feel comfortable planting them. Since you used rooting hormone to start, it may shave off some waiting time for ya. Either way, if you have root bumps or rootlets, I would say keep at it, 'cause it's working and will get there eventually. :0)
@@bobsmith-ud9xi I think it would be I would take the clippings from the new 'soft' part of the hardwood. Hi
Thank you so much for the information..
Now do I put the cuttings a sunny window ir in a dark one ?
I put mine in a sunny window. The key is to switch out the water 2-3 times a week so algae and mold don't grow too much.
Very helpful and informative
Should I put some Miracle Grow in water. Also, warm or cold water?
My hen and chickens stay outside all year long in Michigan...
