One thing that was not mentioned is they did have a Garmin for navigation. But no SOS device.
This one was very touching and emotional to produce. David always putting his son first, even with the life threatening injuries, he was able to fight through it to make sure Charlie was ok. And for Charlie, words can't describe the way he handled the situation. I can't even imagine how proud David is of his son.
While many might question why David would take his young son rock climbing, I see a dad wanting to share with his son the one thing he loves. I'm sure if Charlie didn't like it, David wouldn't have forced it on him. But Charlie loved it and it was a way for a father and son to bond. Some go hunting, ride bikes, ride atvs, scuba diving, play sports, etc. All have some level of danger, but that's what makes sharing these activities so amazing between father and son. It was a freak accident, not human error. From what I researched, David was a very experienced and safe climber. So much, where his mom didn't mind Charlie sharing in these activities with her ex-husband. David never took Charlie on any climbs really dangerous as far as rock climbing goes. The systems David had in place like using a Grigri saved his life, along with his incredibly courageous son. He taught his son so well, he was able to lower his dad off a big cliff by himself. Yes, it was a big mistake to not have a SOS device. Luckily, he had a Charlie.

I grew up mountain climbing, backpacking, and eventually spelunking, and never was it ever just my dad, my brothers, and I. We always had multiple adults around and everyone knew that keeping an eye on the kids was part of the expedition. I think it's great to introduce your children to the outdoors, but this guy turned his child into an accessory, and that's a recipe for disaster, either on or off the trail.
Doing dangerous activities such as these should never be done alone, and when you're with a small child, you are essentially all by yourself. They are lucky to be alive. This guy endangered his child and himself, as much of Charlie's suffering could have been prevented, if they were accompanied by another adult.

@@darnh6012 I suppose your beacon is going to call for help, if you're unconscious, or ill? Is it going to fight off an animal attack? Is a beacon going to find you supplies or aid, until help can arrive? The answer is "no" to all those questions. A beacon can only do so much and only really covers instances of simply being lost. It isn't a safeguard against the worst things that can happen to you all alone, because you never know if a misplaced step is going to send you down an embankment with a boulder atop one of our limbs, or if a drought-stricken black bear is going to see you as lunch.
Many, many seasoned backpackers and hikers have died all alone, because they overestimated their skills, and underestimated the danger of going it by themselves. Worst is when someone puts too much faith in gear that not only carries the risk of user error, but also the disadvantage of only being able to a distress signal. It can't tell you if help has received your signal, and it can't send communication as to the nature of your emergency. All recipes for disaster, when it strikes.

As a climber, I used to read the yearly Accidents in N American Mountaineering. Many of the accidents (most involving at least one fatality) share a couple of common cause categories; attempting objectives beyond the team’s capabilities and/or level of preparedness being one of them. Preparedness includes physical, mental, and having appropriate gear. Overestimating one’s abilities is another. It seems minimum equipment for a team in such remote circumstances would include a Garmin InReach. It also seems somewhat...questionable?...to place a young man in such a circumstance. The kid’s a demonstrated mountaineer, though, who handled it when it needed to be handled. Good for him, and many successful adventures to him.

What an epic story of the journey of father and son, and so well told. Charlie has grown into a handsome young man. Sadly his father David died in April of the year 2024 at age 60. May he Rest in Paradise, perhaps climbing rocks among the clouds.

I had to read the comments before watching all this episode, I wasn’t going to watch if anything happened to the kid, I’m depressed enough so I have to check these things. What an amazing little boy Charlie is, well done Charlie

It's one thing to put yourself in danger but the father took foolhardy risks with his sons' safety. No matter how skilled he was, the boy just didnt have the physical strength of an adult. Hopefully the father learned from the experience.

My dad was an outdoorsman who was very reckless with his own safety. And then also with mine and that of my sister. He got us into very hairy situations, and VERY nearly got her killed once, in a canoe accident. By some incredible stroke of luck some other people happened along, and they saw that Dad and Susan needed saving.
I don't think he learned from it, but my sister did. And she became old enough to do as I did, and say that she didn't feel like going when his idea was a crazy one. I was always sorry I hadn't known about that accident until years later, or I would have told him that he was too reckless. I'm sure my mum did tell him, but he wouldn't have cared about that. Despite his terribly bad luck in life, it never occurred to him that he was bringing it on himself, and that maybe he should have been more careful. But I sure love and miss him. RIP Emmett. ❤❤❤

I kept waiting to hear David was decapitated but Charlie stitched it back on and told his dad to keep on going😂😂 this was an amazing story. Well Charlie did do a great job, David deserves a whole lot of praise himself. As someone who has broken a hip when I was not near anyone, I can tell you the pain of walking just a few feet is incredible. I had to walk about 30-45 ft, and it took me an hour. The fact that he was able to walk through a Boulder field is simply amazing.

Why anyone wouldn't carry a satellite emergency beacon in this day and age is beyond me.
I spent less than a hundred dollars for mine and pay the monthly $12 fee, and my outdoor adventures are nowhere near as challenging as those described in these videos. The cost is low and the weight is negligible. How much would you be willing to spend on one if you found yourself dangling on a rope a thousand feet above the ground?

Making your child take part in a sport known for fatalities- amongst seasoned climbers. A boy has no free will and would never risk disapproval from his father. Men who have something to prove all the time are children. Only a child isn't fearful of high risk whose reward is purely symbolic. At around 18, our brains rewire out of that phase if we're maturing at a normal rate.

This should be made into a movie. I am always amazed that people can go back to an activity that nearly killed them or where they witnessed tragedy-I couldnt do it. Well, ok I guess in a way I did that-many years ago I was in a bad car accident that could have killed me as I broke my neck but ever since then I dont like driving and never feel safe in a car. I know if I experienced a fall while climbing I would not climb again.

Outdoor adventures are a great thing to introduce your kids to. Creating a love of the outdoors is great parenting. What isn’t great parenting is taking too much risk. You’ll never have no risk but as a parent you put the child’s safety above your own wants.
