    First, you have an adorable daughter and I'm so happy to hear she's "out of the woods" with her cancer. As a parent, I can't imagine the emotional & physical stress your family had to endure with your daughter's medical issue. Continued good health to her.
    Now on to the Versys: I've owned 2. A 2016 that I purchased new in 2017 for $10,500 out the door. In SoCal, the Versys is not a big seller and great deals abound. I also have a 2020 model for all the electronic & suspension upgrades that happened in 2019. The Versys has been among my 2 favorite MC's I've owned. The other being a 1982 Honda 900F. I love the balance of both. They are sporty, handle well, reliable and can serve multiple functions.
    One thing you didn't mention was bang for the buck. While the new Versys is now over $20,000, in comparison to BMW's RT's, GS's, Ducati Multistrada and KTM 1290 which are all $25-30,000 MC's, it offers great value. I'd put the Suzuki V-Strom 1050, GSX 1000 GT, Triumph Tiger 1200 GT and Yamaha Tenere in the same value group as the Versys.
    I'm glad you mentioned those infernal luggage straps. Rube Goldberg must have designed them!😠😖 I have the Givi 56 liter top trunk that carries my stuff, so I don't use the panniers except when taking a trip. Better to split lanes in SoCal without the bags.
    You didn't mention the helmet holder on the side frame, even though you pointed to it. When you're traveling, especially 2 up, the panniers are full of your stuff. You can't use them for your helmet. I don't think I've seen a stock helmet lock on a MC in years, maybe decades. Bravo to Kawasaki for supplying that!👏
    Would it be nice if the Versys had another 20 hp or so....Yes, but still it has plenty of power for all your needs.
    Chain drive: I was concerned with having a chain when I bought the 2016 Versys. I've maintained the chain with cleaning on a regular basis. The OEM chain lasted 33,000 miles with only 4 adjustments! The second lasted 27,000 miles and the third was just installed when I sold the MC with over 60,000 miles. Modern chains don't bother me now. They're reliable as long as you maintain them and don't abuse them.
    I now have almost 14,000 miles on the 2020 model and really enjoying it! The only upgrades I've made are a Givi Windscreen(I'm 6'2" and the stock "touring" windscreen was much too short), phone holder, cup holder and the perviously mentioned Givi top trunk. I would like to see Kawasaki put on a one hand control for the windscreen like the Yamaha Tracer so you can adjust on the fly.
    The last item I need to mention is reliability. Japanese MC's are essentially bullet proof. My original Versys traveled over 60,000 trouble free miles with only routine wear items like tires, chains, brake pads etc. My 2016 battery even lasted until this year. With European MC's, you take your chances and repairs are outrageous!

    I have had chain driven bikes and accumulated over 22K miles on my latest and never need adjusting. Shaft drive has a higher cost, weight penalty and about 5-10% higher loss in power to rear wheel which also equates to higher fuel cost. I lube my chain every 200 miles with chain wax and only clean rear wheel and sideplates. In total no more then 10 minutes before each ride.

      Pros and cons with both, to be sure. I toured hard and heavy so adjustments were frequent. Cleaning and living is part of the maintenance which is absent with a shaft drive. It's a lot of time over an aggregate spent on the chain, don't you think? The shaft driven bikes typically have power to spare, but yes it does add a lot of weight.

      @@pegasusmotorcycletours If a chain needs frequent adjusting then there is significant wear on chain sprockets or both. At that point it is already on its way to premature failure. The countershaft sprocket should be replaced every 12K miles as it wears at 3-4x the rate the rear sprocket due to number of teeth. If you do not do that the stress on any individual roller in chain is highly increased because the tooth profile is altered and pitch distance increases.
      I gave up on shaft drive options because most of the bikes that have it are from Euro manufacturers. A shaft drive is more practical for V4 or boxer engine where crankshaft axis rotates in same plane as shaft drive. Otherwise, there one extra bevel gear set with bearings that increases weight, complexity, cost, increased rotational, mass,mand reduced driveline efficiency.
      The majority of shaft-driven Japanese bikes have limited market appeal. Those older gen shaft driven bikes rarely get updates due to mostly low sales. The big mile muncher riders who demand shaft drive always want their voice to rise above all others but they represent too little in actual sales compared to significant majority of motorcycles sold today.

      That is a very insightful perspective - thank you. I am not opposed to chain actually - especially in an ADV touring bike where weight is key. There is something to be said about the shaft effect as well, and I speak about that in my review of the Super Tenere. But this was a new take that you shared so I am very grateful for it.

      @@cubatime72 There are three primary factors that cause the need for chain adjustment. First is sprocket tooth wear and mostly on the countershaft sprocket due to ratio of number of teeth as compared to rear. I change that sprocket after 12K miles before teeth start to significantly hook. If you don't do this then pitch distance between teeth increases. This means the load is carried by fewer sprocket teeth and fewer rollers on the chain. This then increases the load on each individual roller. The rollers are essentially individual bearings that wear faster when load is increased. Once the rollers start to increase clearance with the pins internally (if well maintained this happens very slowly) it is all over as the wear accelerates for the same reason of sprocket wear. Third, I lube chain with dry lube every couple hundred miles. This self-cleaning lube prevents accumulated dirt from eroding o-rings that protect the sealed rollers from water and dirt ingression and the grease from leaking out.
      It takes me with centerstand < 10 minutes to lube chain and clean rear rim. Depending on how particular you are about the appearance of your bike, cleaning the rear rim is something you do more frequently with either shaft or chain drive cause it is in the wake of dust kicked up by front wheel.

    Purchased a 2021 2 years ago for long touring. Did a 10k mile motocamp trip around the country last year. With a few upgrades this bike is friggin awesome! From speed to handling this bike checks all the boxes.....except off road. This is not an adventure bike, don't use it as one. Roughest roads I did were campsite dirt roads. Planning another long trip summer 2024, and looking forward to saddling up the Versys!!

    Correction made below on LED lighting and I will at least own up to my mistakes. Turn signals are indeed incandescent and was mislead by Kawasaki website that clearly states "All-LED lighting including cornering lights,"
    "I stand by all of my other comments. For proof there were absurd number of comments made about the green paint then just about anything else on the bike. The green paint was last used on 2020 model year
    I am sorry but to be honest this review was very unprofessional. It was absolutely by far the worst I've seen on Versys 1000 and all over the place with inaccurate or misleading information.
    -I own 2022 Versys SE LT+
    -The footpegs are perfectly fine for standing on when mounting the bike. Do you really think Kawasaki would underdesign this and risk huge lawsuits? I am degreed mechanical engineer and find such amateurish comments from someone who brags about their multiple advanced degrees laughable to make such an ignorant statement
    - Riding 2--up and not pokey riding I averaged 47 mpg. You must be one of those riders who refuses to upshift before 5K rpm to only get 35 mpg
    -The quick--shifter is great as long as you follow instruction and only upshift above 4K rpm and much better for passenger with less jerky power interuption with faster gear changes
    -You complain about fuel range but laud your VFR1200 that holds a half gallon less fuel and gets poorer fuel economy😂
    -You complain about tech but you don't even understand nor took the time to learn how to use it. There are only two throttle maps on Versys. The standard one is used on all but Rain mode or Rider mode you can customize it to use the lower setting. Otherwise, the modes affect suspension settings and traction control settings. Your VFR1200 doesnt even have cruise control which should be considered mandatory for any modern long-distance tourer😟
    -ABS reduces chance of death on motorcycle by 25%. When it comes to safety why should we live with stone age mindset on motorcycles?
    -Versys dramatically improves upon this basic level of ABS safety with advanced safety tech that provides cornering ABS and traction control. Even modern motoGP riders rely on advanced tech and they are trained professionals in a controlled environment of a track.
    Next time be honest. Your precious 2010 VFR1200 has crappy low speed fueling and poor stock suspension. No cruise, no fuel range indicator, and limited safety tech that could be the difference between debilitating injury and death vs. Non-event and living to tell about it the next day. The electronic nannies of Versys dont intervene unless you do something naughty and you can still turn off KTRAC. That old school visceral feeling riders talk about with old tech could be a good epitaph for your next of kin to put on your memorial

Not sure why you're taking it personally the turn signal bulbs are indeed incandescent - BULB,12V 10W part number 92069. For the other point's I simply disagree. I'd normally take the time to respond in detail, as I always do, and I never delete comments, no matter how disparaging. However I am going to delete yours in one week, because you had the indecency to invoke the idea of my kids being fatherless and my wife a window. Shame on any biker who says that to another. I'll leave your comment here for a week so potential buyers can make up their own mind, and then it will be deleted because I ride for a living and don't need any bad omens or curses over me. Comments like thus are not welcome on my channel. I wish you a long lifetime of health and great riding.

      ​​@@pegasusmotorcycletours I NEVER stated anything about your kids being fatherless. Where did that come from? Maybe your subconscious mind is reading into that simply because I made critical remarks about your dislike for modern rider aids.
      I saw your other video where you were hit by oncoming vehicle riding off-road and you were very lucky to walk away unscathed. Any rider who thinks their skills are far superior to any modern 6 axis IMU and high speed electronics controls measuring and correcting in fractions of a second needs a serious wake-up call. The old systems were generally poor and overly intrusive. The new ones are adjustable, precise, and barely noticeable unless you ride on the edge and then they will do their thing. There are plenty of RUclips videos prove such systems are far superior to most humans in maintaining control.
      If you want proof the tech on Versys 1000 works my wife and I were riding yesterday down on a winding rural road when suddenly a 8-10 pound woodchuck ran out in front of us at the
      last moment. I braced for impact and hit the thing and it barely altered our course. We stopped about 3/4 mile down the road to inspect and the Harley rider behind us followed. He was highly impressed because he said the bike barely deviated off-course.

      @@kannermw Glad to hear you came out of that unhurt. Animals crossing the road is the most common danger for moto touring actually. I don't know how much of the bike tech is responsible for a better outcome in that scenario, but no doubt it plays a role. I don't disagree with you about the benefits of ABS for example, but we do disagree about the necessity for the quick shifter, the plethora of idiot lights and pretty unimportant information like where the weight distribution is, how much throttle or brake is being applied - I find these to be distracting actually and hence dangerous. Every accident I ever had on my bike including the one you mentioned was a result of me going too fast for the conditions. That is typically the case in most accidents I dare say. The riders aids are fascinating tech, but each new gen of bikes takes a little away from the rider - now we have DCT and E bikes, and its getting impossible to purposefully lock up the rear wheel - a very critical skill for any biker to master on their bike so they do not get caught of guard or surprised when it inevitably does happen - with aid or without. The fact is, Kawasaki is competing with itself so that is why it got rid of the might Concours this year, but between the two, I would still choose the Connie over the Versys. I am very happy to hear you love the bike though - to each their own. no hard feelings - thanks for being a contributing member to this channel. Nik

    Great review. Very impartial. I think im a bit like you, i love the sports tourer riding position of vfr's and the like as well rather than the adventure type of riding position.     This motor is too tame? Obviously, you did not grow up in the 1960's when Triumph and BSA's were the hot rods of their day with about 46 horsepower. You young folks are spoiled.

    Just had the pleasure of renting a Versys 1000 SE in Italy for an extended tour of the Dolomites. I found the side bags to be much smaller than the competition, such as the BMW GS or the Triumph Tiger. I had no problems with using the tech and features like the quick shifter and cruise control. The motorcycle was smooth and fast, but a bit too heavy for my liking. Especially with my gear and a full tank of gas, it was noticeably top heavy. Of course, I'm an old guy now, so motorcycle weight has become an issue. A tall strong younger man would have no issues.

    I've narrowed it down to this and the new Suzuki GX which has an edge because I already know I love the engine. This one I have to test ride again, I like all of the tech, the cornering lights and I actually like the cluster, only thing I'm not sold on is the power level. But speaking of useless signs, they're starting to put turn signal indicators on motorcycle mirrors. It's a motorcycle, it's a few feet from front to back, I can literally see the turn signals lol.

      @@pegasusmotorcycletours I just love sport tourers. I found the VFR1200 a little blend and boring. In my opinion Honda didn't made it in such a way that could live up to its successors but your upcoming review might change my mind ! Keep up the good work and don't ever stop riding!

    I've a quickshifter on my Gen3 Hayabusa .. and I never use it apart from when I'm down shifting to optimise getting through roundabouts / traffic

    Do you know about the "Brake in" period? in 100mile you should drive at low RPM. If you own a motorcycle I'm sure you know that they tend to change and become more loose after km.

    What do you think of the Versys 650, you didn't compare to this one? You seem to be always searching for more and better. Appreciate you can walk, mount a bike and enjoy the outdoors...there are many people who can't do one or the other.

      Thanks for watching and for your question. I had a 2006 650 and was pleasantly surprised by it. It was fun to ride, simple to own and maintain. Also dirt cheap in comparison. The one I bought had over 30k miles, looked older, but went up to Alaska.

    Is there a heat problem like the Concours 14 has? I sold mine just for this reason. If the temp was over 80 I couldnt ride the bike. I did several things to address it but it was unreal how much heat that thing put on you. This bike looks like it might be more comfy for a 6 foot 2 rider.

      I definitely did not notice a problem with heat retention or air circulation such was the case with the older concours 14. My understanding is that with the newer concourse redesign of the fairing, that problem was somewhat resolved. I'm 5 ft 8 so you got quite a few inches on me and I would say any of these bikes for me still feel kind of cramped compared to the gold wings that I'm used to. Only one way to know though.       I had a 2008 Concours 14. This was the first year for that design and the model that had heat issues. I also live in the Phoenix Az area which made riding in the summer months unbearable. I now own a 2022 Versys 1000 and have ridden it through 2 summers. Yes, the engine does get hot but it is tolerable. The heat hitting my right foot/ankle is noticeably higher than the left side. I’ve caught myself moving my right foot to the very edge of the footrest and turning it outwards, but this was on days where the temperature was in excess of 105 degrees. Temps under 100 are easily managed with some minor foot movements providing you do not spend too much time waiting at lights, or moving slowly in stop & go traffic.

    I’d love to know the spec sheet of your ideal bike, lots of complaints. 😂. Bought a 2015 V1K used recently and was great value for the money. Love the character of the Ninja 1000 engine.

      Well one of my favorite bikes so far is the moto guzzi california. 1400cc air cooled transverse twin. I ride the flying fortress now but a bike I like much more that is in the class of this kawasaki is my honda vfr1200f. That review dropped last month. Much more bike. Thanks for watching.

    exited for the zero review. other reviews don't consider it compared with other gas bikes, resale values are still high so the owners must like em.

      Thanks. Long story short, they are still too expensive and the range very limited, much lower than advertised. Still a long way to go. But fun for around town. They need luggage to make them most useful but that severely affects aerodynamics and range. Without luggage they loose their main attraction in my eyes. Also, charging in places is.not.always available for motorcycles and neither is it free. The lack of noise is also a safety concern I noticed.

    Your dead ass wrong about people not getting excited about inline 4s lemme tell you ive put 50 thousand miles on the good v twins you know the ones suzuki puts in the vstrom and man give me that sweet sweet 4 every time. If only i could make the vstrom bike have this engine id be unstoppable

      That's an interesting take because I LOVE the vstrom precisely for its twin. I have had two, and 4 Suzuki Sv1000s which share that engine. I'd take the twin over a 4 and time although I'm riding the vfr which has a V4 setup. Search for a newer comparison videos here on RUclips about best engine design. The dude explains why it's the v4.

      @pegasusmotorcycletours I think personally since I've owned many twins the nature of the long stroke is the problem they create delay and fatigue through vibrations that a 4 just doesn't. Realistically any v4 is too expensive for my taste. I have a versys 1000 and a vstrom 1050xt. I have both bikes for cheaper than any v4. I do have a special place for the sv1000 precisely for its bargain price though

    Mine broke on my cases on the left side of the bike those little so-called chords that's supposed to hold it together and I have not figured out those buckles either I don't even use them I get mad about it I spent 10 minutes trying to put them things on the correct way or at least what I thought was the correct way

      They absolutely suck! No luggage buckle should be a source of stress and these have been around for generations now. Absolutely the worse design.

    yes versys 650 is also top heavy; one downside vs a low rider. i wll stick wtih the vulcan S. kaw should come out with a vulcan 850 or so; low rider; forward controls.

      I haven't tried the Vulcan but looks much lower. A modern cruiser.

    I agree that part of the pleasure of motorcycling is shifting and braking and being connected to the bike. All of the automatic shifting and such doesn’t add value for me. I do like ABS brakes as they can do things a human simply can’t do, but a quick shifter adds no real functionality.

      @@pegasusmotorcycletours Yes, when I had to replace my 1994 stick shift Chevy truck in 2015, I had to buy an automatic as Chevy didn’t even offer a manual transmission anymore unless you bought a diesel truck. And my 2006 Hyundai Sonata was my last stick shift car as we drive SUVs now and I don’t think anyone makes a stick shift SUV.

    6:14 - to be fair you can get some pretty extensive engine bar setups for the Versys 1000. I agree with you about the front wheel though - that's not really an off road setup. I was disappointed to see how Honda are making the Africa Twin Adventure Sport model weirdly less capable of adventurous off road sports by giving it a 19" front wheel. Oh well...

      Thank you for sharing that tip. A lot of owners seem to love and keep these bikes for a long time. And when I reviewed my nc, I called out the fact that it was a perfect platform for a killer add motorcycle that Honda has tried to produce although not quite succeeded in with the new one.

    For those that really do the miles, cleaning a chain gets old. I'd rather lube a spline or change the oil once a year.

    Chain drive is better .and not a big deal to look after unless you are mechanicaly inept. FACT.

      Why is it better. I just changed the head bearing on a goldwing this morning which ought to satisfy any mechanics certificate exam, but being that chain stretches unevenly, one part might be too tight, and another section too loose, which make them a pain in the ass to deal with for anyone racking up Miles.

      Chain can be visually checked-had a trip cancelled due to a final drive seal leak. Was a $500 repair too.

      It doesn't take long for the chain and disks to get rusty in coastal San Diego with the salty mist.

    Spot on review of this bike🎉.
    Have a 2022 and have put 1900 miles on so far.
    Hated the spongy shifter at first but u do get used to it and not an issue.
    I’m 6’1”, 34” inseam. Little cramped after a few hours of seat time.
    Bars are a bit far forward as well, for me. Risers or aftermarket bars are available to fix this.
    Being a bit taller I had a ton of buffeting on my helmet with the stock windscreen. Couple aftermarket mods fixed that.
    Overall, love the bike!

Mada je sve relativno i zacisi od navike - ja vozim goldwing i honda vfr1200f sto su za svoju klasu dosta teski motori ali meni nesmeta iskreno mada za adv touring gs1200 he stvarno pretezak, a isto tako za sport touring vfr1200 mi je bas tezas nasprem ovog kavasakija. Prekjuce sam pokupio 2013 bmw f800gt i osjecao se kao pero nasprem honde. Jbg. Nikad dva dobra sastavit. Odakle pises? Potdrav iz San Diega

Svidja mi se 1290sas ali mi je nekak suvise visok a inace ne trazim nista off road jer imam drz400,samo za medjugradsku voznju i putovanje mi treba motor.Mozes da zamislis kad se pojavim sa 190cm i gsa izmedju kola,svi se sklanjaju😂

      ​@pegasusmotorcycletours you've just killed objectivism in your MBA framed perception... and then there's the level of experience on top of that. Like the fact that 100 miles bikes are still in the run in period and are clunky as hell, especially Kawasaki. Let's not walk around the subject, but if introspection would be one of your strong suits, you'd realise that your evaluation of this motorcycle is probably amateur at best and probably putting off less experienced people from a bike that is otherwise one of the best and friendliest sport tourers on the market.
