Both had great conditioning, but Lee's was a bit more cut and shredded. That's what got him the wins against Ronnie. Same for Jay, Ronnie looked objectively larger, just look at the quads, but Jay's quads were more shredded on comp day.
Had spine fusion in 1990,was a union iron worker still lifted heavy 2010 my fusion broke at work had a cage put in then destroyed my right shoulder I’m 64 now it’s chest and tris day I don’ squat with weights any , well very light, and heavy deadlifting is over, but I still work out at least 4 times a week, I was big but no bodybuilder I can understand Ronnie’s mindset Especially with gifted genetics. Sometimes I’m crippled up but if I don’t lift I’m done for every rep counts, oh and btw Lee priest is my all time favorite it was he that convinced me in the 90s that genetics play a huge Part in body building I was stronger than a lot of guys bigger and ripped up . Almost started taking gear to get that I xtra edge but didn’t . Sure my genetics would not have handled extra mass

I agree with everything you said. The era of the mass monsters changed what bodybuilding should be . There were also some very controversial wins in the Mr O for Ronnie there were definitely times when Ronnie shouldn't have won .

Historically, bodybuilding was always about health & fitness first & foremost, only then shaping your body to be as perfectly balanced, symmetrical & conditioned as possible. It was never about being the biggest, it was about being the best, eg Steve Reeves, Frank Zane, Serge Nubre. Bodybuilding lost its original purpose decades ago, as the primary goals of health & fitness were discarded, resulting in cartoonish freak mass monsters, body dismorphia & poor mental health, that tragically yet unsurprisingly has seen professional & even amateur bodybuilders die far too young. IMO, this is madness & a total inversion of what bodybuilding was originally all about.

Unfortunately, bodybuilding, at least for many people, isn't just about symmetry and aesthetics. It's about size too. And a 6ft3 guy just looks WAY more impressive then a short 5ft man. No matter how hard they train, or what they achieve, they can't grow taller, and it often looks a little out of place when a short guy is so big, just doesn't look as nice. The hard truth is that this is a bodybuilding comp, where looks matter, it's not a strong man comp.
