Agreed! I've watched quite a few videos on tip ups and this one is by far the best. Now I have more confidence when I take out my new tip up. I'm fishing the Utah trout though, possibly some walleye. Thanks for the great video!
Just stumbled onto this video and have to agree with other commenters that this is the best tip up fishing video by far. Very thorough, lots of tips and techniques on how to be successful. Put together well and a nice pace even. Awesome!
This is how I was taught by my father. 9/10 of my friends need to watch this video. I have one friend that "Tbones" the thing 75% of the time. He is a Musky guide so I keep quite. Really though, good video for people to see, not just the beginners. Got two 31 and 31.25" walleye on my family's lake this winter. Been getting as many friends out as possible. I am a Musky and walleye guide but don't do it in the winter, I like to snowmobile too much!! Thanks a again for this video, I will save and send to all my friends. Good luck to you and all anglers out there!
Northern Wisconsin, it's a private lake my family has lived on since the late 80's. Had always been known for big eyes. Now years later it's finally back to its glory and not just the eyes. I'd tell the name but there is a resort on it and don't want it getting destroyed. Tight lines!
Nice video. Two other tips. 1) One can put the trip bar on either the slimmer brass side of the trigger bar for faster releases or the thicker side for somewhat harder-slower trips. This helps with the wind/no wind issue. and 2) Another guy puts his flag bar on the windward side of the hole so the winds actually blow the bar onto the brass trip tip, whichever one you choose. This way you can help avoid false flag trips from the wind. During your retrieval I don't know if you added that unlike the fishing poles, we don't have any give in the line so be prepared to drop the line if the fish makes a run for it. Holding on and handlining a larger or more powerful fish could have those undesirable results you mentioned with breaking lines or getting the line grooved into the ice underneath. Thanks again!
*These work with rod and reel or tip ups **enjoyable.fishing** recommend it’s good for keeping snow out of the hole and to greatly slow hole freezing. They are not heavy so need to be held down by tip up or some snow/ice shavings if windy. Have not had them freeze down even when placed in wet ice shavings.*
That's a homerun. Best how-to video I have ever seen on top ups! just so you know the video I am putting out tonight focuses on exaggerated hook sets as well. No one will watch it but I want you to know I wasn't trying to copy you I filmed it before I saw yours.
@@winnesotafishing that's what I thought. By the way that was supposed to be an ! After tip-ups not a ?. I literally mean that is the best how-to video I have ever seen on tip-ups!!!!!
Been fishing for walleyes for a long time with beaver dam tip ups. They are very smooth but you gotta relube them every couple years. I do. That should be your next video. Lol
Great video...that minnow container is the best there is... I have one too... its easy to get minnows out with that lift net in there..I usually use big blues for eyes I thought about using the sucker minnows for eyes which I use for pike...anyway nice work on that video. You ever eat the eyes u catch.. I was like wth.. hes throwing them back....😆
Great video! Just learning to ice fish. Bought a tip up today and trying to learn to use it. Great job explaining. Will watch more vids of yours for sure!
Thanks for watching!!! I know beaver dam tip ups are a little expensive but if you are just getting into fishing they are as good as they get. (not sponsored by them just love their product)
@@winnesotafishing This is going to be my first time Ice Fishing so I will adopt your technique for sure seems very simple and straight forward... I notice my wife has a dress with some button, I'm pretty sure she won't miss one! LOL
I just use the holes that are already in the button and weave it through two of the holes. That way it slides easy if you want it to but also slides easy.
After you have caught and dealt with the fish. Rearrange your line on the ground so the hook is at the bottom of your pile of line so that when you start spooling it back on the tip up you are pulling from the top of the pile. If that makes sense.
@@winnesotafishing Thanks for the vid. I used what you said today and caught 3 21" pickerel, and 2 largemouth bass, both over 17", pretty alright for first time ice fishing. Lets go Tip-Ups :)
Yoo! Im new to walleye ice fishing, but have yet to ice one this season. Im wondering do you run into alot of pike on tipups in your walleye spots? Ive caught perch jigging and pike on tipups no walleye action.
Yes I run into a lot of pike while tip up fishing... On several bodies of water that I frequent the pike bite during the day and then as the sun goes down the walleye turn on in the same spot. A lot of the time catching pike during the day is a good sign because it means the bait fish are there. Besides Mille Lacs lake 90% of the walleye I catch are after dark.
Did I hear you say you use a treble hook? Is that legal now? Used to be illegal with live bait. Also any tip on how to rig the minnow? Through the back, or lip/nose?
I have looked several times and have never been able to find anything with regards to treble hooks being illegal. I have heard that before though. I have sent an email to the MN DNR and if I find something different out I will comment. I always hook minnows in the back on set lines.
Winnesotafishing Thanks. I looked in the online regs and couldn’t find anything about trebles and live bait either. Will be interested in the MNDNR response. Nicely done video, by the way.
This is what I got from the DNR... "Yes, treble hooks are fine. Page 30 says, “You can use up to three single- or multi-pronged hooks (treble hooks would be “multi-pronged”) on the end of a line as a single tackle configuration.” They do need to be within 9 inches from first to last." I was fairly confident it had changed but didn't wanna speak out without being 100% Now we know.
16-18 go straight into the frying pan setup right on the ice. Reading some of the comments really makes me appreciate having a dad who actually did most things right and some things very well. I can’t even fathom never going ice fishing or hunting , truly sad.
It's actually a product I got a few years on clearance at Walmart of all places. It is a Reaction Tackle Trolling line. Any type of nylon braided line for casting will work because it is designed to come of the spool smoothly which IMO is more important than a lot of the ice line that is more geared towards shedding water to avoid freezing. This seems to make a lot of ice line a little more rigid. Again just my opinion. Thanks for the question.
Yeah sorry, It is the type of line that is normally used on a bait casting reel for muskies. If that doesn't make sense let me know and I'll find a link.
