    Great review! I'm glad to see someone cover the Lyr+ because I feel like there's not a lot of reviews on it and having own one since launched I think it's a fantastic amp. So I have a Little Dot mk2, with some vintage tubes in it. I drive either a pair of Focal Elegia or HiFiMan Sundara with it. So I'm curious about this since you compared it so favorably to the Dark Voice. And I have the Freya+ (again with vintage tubes) and therefor am familiar with, and rather like the Schiit sound in general. Source would be either a Denafrips Ares 12th for digital or a Rega RP-8 with a Hana Umami, into a Rothwell SUT and then a Pro-ject Tube Box DS2, then into a Freya+ in passive mode and into the Lyr+.

    I'm currently using an MCTH+SDAC with HD6XX. I really like the sound, but I wonder if I'm giving the 6XX enough power to tightly control the driver. I know the advice is to put money into upgrading the headphones before upgrading the amp. So I guess my question is this: would $650 put into the Lyr+ be a better upgrade than putting $650 into new headphones to use with the dac/amp I already have? The MCTH+SDAC does have a pre-amp RCA out, so I can still use the SDAC with the Lyr+.

      @@joanfrederick9176 Josh previously recommended the Koss KSC75's in that price range. Audiophiles have a sickness. Some of us spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on equipment for listening to music. The average audiophile probably has at least a few thousand in gear. Don't be like us. Stay happy at under $50 if you can. Other audiophiles will upvote this, because we all know. We all know.

      As someone who kept his HD 6XX after buying pricier headphones, if you like them as is, you'll love them with a lot of power. It's no hyperbole how much better they scale up with a cleaner signal and higher power.
      Once I got a Schiit Modius/Magnius stack, they really performed so much better with the additional wattage in balanced mode with the stock cable converted to XLR balanced.
      Bass got tighter, mids got even more textured, the highs sounded clearer and the soundstage got wider.
      I suggest you get a beefy amp first for them, because they have a lot more to give.

    First: DV is OTL while LYR+ is a hybrid
    Second: Using a Tung Sol in LYR and Stock Tubes in DV might lead to your conclusion. Why don´t you try the ceap chinese driver tube from DV in the LYR for comparison?
    Your way to compare them seems pointless, because you´re comparing not only the amps but the tubes too.
    For this pricetag you can get a Darkvoice (OTL) + xDuoo MT-602 (hybrid) and still have a lot of cash left for tube rolling them both. If you don´t mind the remote.

    Serious question: One tube, two channels. What does the tube do?

  • @dHolbach77
    @dHolbach77 2 года назад +7

    I have the Lyr+. Some thoughts:
    First, the quality control is typical Schiit*. It stopped working because of button/face plate misalignment (search around on forums for more info on this design flaw; this is a common problem and Jason even admitted that they are working on redesigning the buttons: they should have never released a product so flawed to begin with, at least at this price point). I had to push the chassis around to get the buttons realigned, to "pop" back into place so they "clicked" and then it worked...now I'm afraid to move the thing; or even roll a tube.
    The sound is...fine. For its price point it's good in like a solid B. Nothing more or less and don't listen to anyone who tells you otherwise. It's better than some slightly lower priced amps, but for two to three hundred more (or even around the same price; e.g. Flux offerings) you can get a lot better (especially used) as it doesn't punch above its weight. It does nothing really wrong, but it has no "magic", even with the tube stage that really sounds much like the SS stage (I blind tested and couldn't tell most of the time). It replicates the typical mid-fi solid state sound: too much glare/hardness, especially in the highs, not enough staging (layering, depth, imaging), too much of a "flat wall of sound" that results in some shoutyness with the wrong headphones, not the greatest resolution, lacking realism (feel like you're listening to music but not experiencing it or able to pick tangible sounds out of the air), but it does have an energetic, fun, dynamic type of sound and it doesn't sound as clinical or fatiguing as something like a Topping or no name Chi-Fi amp. I don't find it particularly powerful either: on both the SS and tube stage I usually had to put the knob at 12+ for a medium listening level with various headphones and IEMs.
    Overall, even though I like idea of the overall design (ability to switch back and forth between SS and tube and a remote), in practice the malfunctioning due to an inherent design flaw, the price, the subtle at best difference between SS and tube rendering that draw inconsequential, and overall fine but unimpressive SQ makes this a return for me. My reference/comparison gear, and gear used for testing include the Ferrum Oor, Burson Funk, Cayin iHA-6, Gilmore Lite Mk2, WA6 2nd gen amps and EE Odin IEMs, HE 1000v2, a friend's Abyss Diana and Final Audio 800. I will say I like the Lyr+ better than the Funk, Cayin, Gilmore and WA6 as they all have, imo, severe sound flaws while the Lyr+ does not ("just" a severe design/reliability flaw!).
    *This is my 3rd Schiit product: one lasted a whole year then died, the other a couple years before developed random channel drops. This is with light use. Moreover, from years of feedback on forums, as well as others I know who have had Schiit products, they just never had very good design/quality control (making made in America stuff with beefy materials you have to cut costs somewhere). I knew that Schiit is a gamble in terms of reliability and longevity and I took that gamble one last time with the Lyr+ despite the many comments about issues with it; I will never again risk trusting Schiit to last; or even work properly from the beginning. So I will never buy another Schiit product.

      Lol you'll hear Joshua talk about QC for 5 min in his recent Moondrop video, but I don't believe I've ever heard him mention QC with Schiit despite how notoriously bad it is. His videos are so pretty though, so no comment ever calls him out on bad/missing info
      I would never trust the Lyr. I owned a Hel2 and the switching between UAC 1 and 2 modes literally broke on its own (it was having issues randomly even when trying to switch between a PS5 and a Switch, despite both supporting the same USB Audio Class so it shouldn't have been switching in the first place). I don't trust any component on Schiit hardware that requires some sort of switching automatically.
      I also dont trust their potentiometers on their lower end stuff (magni, Loki). So much noise introduced when adjusting the gain it was awful. I'm happy with my Asgard and Bifrost rn, but if/when these tap out there's no way I'm trusting Schiit with my next purchase. Their Customer Service is also trash, and they will charge you shipping even if they find their product was faulty within warranty (and will do no troubleshooting before they ask you to send it in)
      TLDR; I wouldn't recommend buying a Lyr. Get a normal tube amp and a normal SS amp, you'll be happier.

      Where the lyr differs from the valhalla is that it's hybrid, so doesn't have the high output impedence of the valhalla. This means it will generally pair better with low impedence drivers, but you won't get the same alteration to the frequency response that you get from an OTL amp (which could be a pro or a con depending on your preference)

    • @RdandTrk1
      @RdandTrk1 2 года назад +1

      @@LyK0sa That makes sense. Thanks for the feedback. It sounds like my best bet is to just keep what I have. My whole motive for a tube amp in the first place is for the unique coloration they're supposed to give sound. That being said, I really can't tell the difference in sound between my Asgard and Valhalla using an HD6XX. I've AB them volume matched for the most part, and I'm just not hearing a tube sound. That being said, I hear that the Valhalla is SS like for a tube amp, and likewise, I've heard the Asgard is tube like for a ss amp, lol. What can you do? Perhaps Bottlehead Crack next. Or maybe this is the audiophile trap? Continuing to spend money for placebo?

    • @LyK0sa
      @LyK0sa 2 года назад +2

      @@RdandTrk1 you could try a 'dirtier' sounding tube amp if you've got money to burn, but honestly the difference is most likely quite subtle. I personally have a feliks echo, which is a pretty clean sounding OTL (pitch black background too, which is nice). The difference is there, but it's reasonably subtle, not a total sound overhaul... I do like it though. Personally I've decided to break the cycle, I've got a singxer SA1 and the echo, and I don't feel like I need anything else.

    I've been long enough in the audiophile space to realize that after you reach one point(which is a lot lower than you might think), the diminishing returns are so little and barely noticeable. However the placebo and post-purchase rationalization effects are way stronger than any perceivable improvements in audio quality, unless of course you upgrade your trained ears to bat capability levels. I know it's a hard pill to swallow, but the sooner you are aware of it the better for your wallet and your sanity, however audiophile companies and influencers might have a different opinion as they would rather keep you spending thousands chasing the next "upgrade" and keep watching their video reviews.
