I would love to hear how you interpret his story from this video and see how close you get!
This was more of a passion project and content I really would like to do more of. Since this has copyrighted music (which I felt described him almost perfectly) I don’t expect this to get picked up by the algorithm nor get any views. But I hope for those who are interested more in Lane stick around! I really want to do more for him!
As you should already know by now, I have wanted to move on from drawing “pretty girls” for a long time now. I want to draw more of my other characters. But it's a hard cycle to break from, especially since 1. They're fun to draw. 2. It brings food to the table.
So, I know people will judge whatever I make. That's just life. But I value those who have supported me and will support me no matter where I go with my art. This is not a sudden change, but I will gradually move away from what I have been doing for the past years. I don’t really like looking back at my old work, and I wouldn't want to be remembered as the RUclipsr who draws only “pretty girls”. (But don't worry, Sploot will stay. Just going more to the cute direction haha). I want to go back to my roots. I feel like I got sidetracked and trapped.
I value feedback and commentary on my work since that's the main reason I do art. I love to hear what people like about my characters and their story.
And well, the “pretty girl” content doesn't really spawn insightful commentary. Almost nothing of value that drives me forward. And that's the main reason I want to move on. I appreciate the attention, but it's not the kind of attention I really want.
It's a nice dopamine rush at the time, but it has no substance for the long term. I have had this existential art crisis for a while, and still figuring out what exactly I want to do. And oh man, I want to do a lot of things. But I am only one person behind all these characters. I only have a limited time to do everything I want. And it's not easy when you're struggling with self-identity in art.

It seems like Lane here is unable to feel pain and deals with alexithymia. He doesn't understand pain or emotion and it frustrates and confuses him. This appears to lead him down a dark path of human experimentation in order to come to an understanding of what things must be like for 'normal' people. He may or may not understand the weight of his actions simply because he doesn't understand the pain and suffering he is putting others through for the sake of his own research. This is just what I was able to pick up on from the video, but I could be wrong about some things
I also just noticed the quick flash of another character with orange and brown hair. It seems like they might be helping to push Lane to continue his experiments on people.
I reached this same interpretation as well. Though the girl being the only other person we see (for more than a frame) is definitely giving a hint of those old Yandere Sim vibes. (god I'm really saying that in 2023 huh?) Maybe she's also playing a part in his motivations? Trying to learn how to feel so he can give love to someone who he thinks deserves it? I dunno tho, theorizing and critical analysis are above my paygrade.😅

i think he's got a tad bit of chronic apathy and a severe lack in empathy as well, as alexithymia on its own doesn't mean you don't feel, it just means you struggle to interpret, recognize and describe what you feel. since his own emotions seems a bit... off, and allat, i doubt it's *just* alexithymia
Since this comment got a heart from Spy, I'm taking this as canon. Also Lane is now my new favorite UnknownSpy character (sorry Price and Check)
My little theory about Lane's backstory is that he was never able to feel emotions nor pain like a typical person. But then as he got older, he starts becoming fasniated with how the human mind and body works, how someone can feel pain and emotions while he has trouble conveying them and understanding them. He wanted to go to university to study and learn more about his fascinations. But in the meantime, he secretly experiments on people, disecting them and unfolding the mysterious nature of the pyche and body.
Idk, I'm probably wrong 😂
Sounds just about what I was thinking, though I'd add that the only time he seems to experience what one might consider happiness or joy is while conducting or thinking about those experiments.

As a person who has not kept up with the recent content and a timw traveler from 2022 this new video really shows the improvement of your art, nothing much else to say or criticise.
it always makes me sad when passion projects like this dont get the same traction as animations that are kinda made to appeal to general audiences… your animations w storylines always feel so rich w meaning and its always captivating to watch and dissect the meaning behind them!
So happy for you tbh, most artists never get out of the "drawing pretty girls" cycle after getting tripped and trapped in the short term rush of it. All the content is lovely either way but thats coming from a long term fan who sees value in the work and characters, way past simply being pretty and apparently suggestive, speaking from experience, not everyone really bothers to look past that and therefor ignore the seriousness behind the content and characters.
Obviously I havent watched the video yet but I am very mych looking forward to it! You sound passionate over it as it is, been a while since we read that tone on this chanel. I dont know much about this character in particular but I'm exited to start studying them more after the videos release.
I JUST SAW IT AND IT HONESTLY OVERTHREW ANY EXPECTATIONS I HAD PREVIOUSLY?? first of all the animation and backgrounds, topped off with the editing and p e r f e c t music is all magnificent. I adore how I went from not knowing anything about her at all to feeling so deeply connected seeing how this character went through their life confused with what most would consider so normal, displaying no pain or discomfort to their injuries is so interesting to me, maybe that’s what could have lead this character down the surgical path as they grew up? (Do correct me if I’m wrong on the pronouns please) with a mix of curiosity and lack of genuine emotion apart from maybe sadistic pleasure, or maybe simply an extreme case of curiosity?
I gotta say I love the designs too, and strangely enough, how well they fit into each background, it’s such a massive improvement, there was so much put into every scene there’s really no room to grow bored, will definitely be rewatching this a few times to try and understand what’s happening some more.
Unknownspy DOES have characters who aren’t pretty girls. She posts her drawings of them on her other platforms and even drawn characters who don’t appear to be female.

0:32 lane is researching the nerve reception I know this as I learnt it from my great grandpa who was a army medic
I have a story for him, I think he has no pain receptors in his nervous system (shown by his hand and stick in the leg), due to this he was seen as scary, different, odd. He had "possibly" gotten his college degree and due to him seeing love and sadness, decides he wants that same love and sadness. His old school mates are a testament for that, and due to him not gaining love and pain, he experiences it via his "test subjects." He later takes this further and goes back to his college and wants others to experience his pain, both metaphorically, and physically, both of which, he enjoys proudly.
I'm quite interested to see what Lane's deal is. Having seemingly no reaction to having one of their bones sticking out is fascinating
I think they've got congenital insensitivity to pain. Basically the nerves don't send the pain signal to the brain.
I'm guessing he has alexithymia (a.k.a. Emotional blindness meaning you can't feel emotionally) and CIPA (not being able to feel pain) and he becomes fascinated with mental and physical pain experimenting on people and wanting to know what it feels like.

Oh, I see. So Lane was never able to feel pain or understand social ques (he looked confused when that kid ran away). We can see clearly that he is saddened by this lack of understanding coming from his part (he looked upset when he saw two kids having fun while he was studying alone). So he basically studied to become a doctor, eventually leading to him doing expedient experiments on people just to fill that void in himself of always feeling disconnected from other people.

Im not usually one to comment but this looks amazing, i love that your animations use a lower frame rate and are a bit more choppy but can still show how each character is moving and how they feel very well. As much as I love Sploot Im dying to see more of this character their story seems super cool
My theory about lane is he enjoys pain and doesn’t really feel emotions in almost every sense of the word and that he study’s a bunch of odd medical biological and kind of psychotic stuff and his professor encourages him towards this stuff
Something about Lane is very compelling to me, I'm excited to see more of them! I especially love how well the expressions, even though they're so small, manage to so well convey their feelings. Your characters expressions have honestly always been one of my favourite aspects of your art❤
These storyline animations are my favourites and in my opinion are THE best videos on your channel. I just wish they were more popular.
That's the sad part. These don't get the same attention as.. y'know... suggestive content. These take more effort to make but don't preform as well.
You see why it's easy to fall in the "sex sells" trap.

Oooo I’m so intrigued! What I’ve garnered so far is that Lane can’t feel pain, or any emotion or any strong emotions. So he’s turned to experimenting on humans to try and understand it? Just my hunch
Amazing! My thoughts:
Dude cannot feel pain. Hence why he doesn't notice the splinter in his foot, or why he pinches himself so hard he bleeds.
His parents die, he becomes orphaned. Sees people around him react to touch, but doesn't understand it himself.
So he studies. And operates on a live body.
Once he's done an operation, he realizes that increasing his understanding allows him to feel something, hence the smile at the end.
A minute and 25 seconds, and that's all you needed to have me completely intrigued by this character's story. I have a million questions!

The storytelling is amazing, and the way each scene expands further and further on the character is so cool!
Plus, the animation is gorgeous!
he never felt pain, or learned how to get over it quickly, detaching himself from everything that might break through his shell. He also never felt happiness like others because he learnt that happiness only leads to sadness or smth like that. He experiments on humans and researches it to figure out why ppl feel pain and how he could feel it or smth. The red eye, hmmmm. He left his eye open to the wind and didn't close it for hours or days with another human experiment and it never healed. my little guess

So this is an actual thing IRL. Basically, Lane can't feel pain. He wants to learn how what causes pain, how people feel it, etc. Most people IRL who have this condition don't realise the pain that they're in, such as touching a hot stove or, like Lane has in the beginning, a shard of glass in their leg. So he studies in university, maybe getting degrees in biology or something along those lines, and also tortures people because he's curious to see how they feel pain. We can see in his study that there's a lot of drawings and stuff of neurons, things that signal our brain, 'Hey, that hurts'. As for his eye, I'm not entirely sure. Maybe it's a side effect of his specific condition.

I love when a character that doesn’t feel pain feels like they’re missing out on an entire world and practically go insane tryna figure it out (at least that’s the most of what I got from this 😭)
what i think is the story: lane was born whitout the hability to feel anything wheter pain or emotions, he joined a scientific institute and start conducting experiment on people who volunteer (willing or unwilling lab rat) in order to understands feelings, the man we see at 0:36 is some sort of mentor who encourage lane experiment for some twisted reason.
he seems to have discover a muchroom that grow in flesh 0:55 there is a drawing of a pig with mushroom coming out of his back and those mushroom comes out of what i assume are lane's test subjects at 0:53, that mushroom seems to affect the brain in some way indicated by his notes at 0:52
PS: i love your stories, what got me hook on your channel was learning more about the world of angel code i'm a sucker for lore and i am happy to learn more about lane that little psycipath of yours😉
I came to the same conclusion, nice analysis. I have a theory that the mushrooms reanimate the bodies Lane and his mentor have tortured, maybe so they can ask them how they felt in death. It's not based on much though lol.
@@internetuser9667 that is an interresting theory i thought that the mushrooms were a sort of drug that enhance the senses but that they only grow in flesh, thus why lane has to kill more people to produce those mushroom and why he produce them so he can feel something by consuming them
To be honest what drew me to your videos was always the visual story telling you use and the aesthetic of your art style. So I will happily stick around if this is whats to come.

That description is such a nice insight on your own experience as an artist, and more recently as a very well known one on the internet. It's easy to understand why you'd get more into drawing stuff like pretty girl characters cause just like you said, you like them and they also bring attention, views, and support.
However, I'd be lying if I said I couldn't be happier to hear these news. I can't imagine how stressful it must be to deal with such a large audience, while also doubting on the kind of stuff you wanna put out to the world. Ofc it wouldn't be wrong if you wanted to keep making that kind of content, but the one thing that I believe separates you from many, many artists, are your stories. You've got an unbelievably creative mind, your character design is connected to the world building, you take these stories seriously without being pretentious, and you clearly have fun and are very passionate about what you make.
Of course no matter what you do, your skills will still be incredible and your personal style will be one of the most memorable I've personally encountered on the internet, but knowing we'll get at least a glimpse of your creative storytelling is super exciting.
I wish you the best, and most importantly, that you never stop creating, never feel pressured to fit a certain mold in the art world, and that you never stop enjoying and having fun creating. Ive been invested in your content for awhile now! I had forgotten how i first found it, i think off of a Sploot video, but i immediately became invested in your work. Not just for pretty/suggestive girls, but because your art holds a lot of emotions. And no matter what im always so invested and brought in with the storytelling, the beauty, the humor, etc.
youre allowed to make any change you want with your art, style, career etc as long as youre comfortable and/or doing what you think is right. Anything you make, so many people are so intrigued and mesmerized. I support you all the way, ive always shown your art to my friends out fo admiration and ik you can make super amazing things that people will love. Even if its not what the people or the algorithm demand for.

No, all of yours animations are gorgeous, but I got so used to seeing you draw and animate "pretty girls" in vivid/pastel colors, to the point that seeing this animation made my jaw drop!
I've been watching you since your OBEY animation (which was 6 years ago, damn???), and when you changed your content to "pretty girls", I was quite sad, as I missed your "roots" a lot. However, seeing you considering to bring them back is- I can't even put it into words! I'm so happy about you returning to the type of content you used to make, but, most importantly, I'm glad that you want to be known for things that truly set your heart on fire of passion.
Sure, struggling with self identity in art can send you spiraling a whole bunch, but I just want to let you know that I (and many others) adore your art regardless.

Referring to the video description section: I wish you'll bring your media control characters back someday. I see a lot of potential in them. If I remember correctly, your "Player select" video featuring some of your media controls was the first video on your channel to reach 1 million views so many other people find the concept fascinating, too and there's so much you could do with those characters and the world. But if you have grown apart from that concept, I understand and you should not force yourself to work on it since art creation is supposed to be enjoyable.
Also, I LOVE Mr. Doodle from the Retoast and Clockwise series but he is so underrated. Please, make an animation of Mr. Doodle! (If you want that is.) I'm sure it would be a hilarious (or scary) one.
