The all play Artificers based in a major urban land scape with magically crafted packs and wands. They use said Arcane packs to trap the ghost for a fee. The ongoing joke would be they are actually an over glorified pest controll start up bussi- Ohhh wait, this has been done before....
I'm doing the opposite for halloween this year. I plan on next game having the necromancer go wild with skelebones, and then for halloween night run a game where everyone plays as skeletons wreaking havoc in the town. I think it'll be awesome.

Hot take: the mechanics of DnD don’t encourage people to take horror games seriously because they’re meant to be empowering. Make them use a homebrew commoner class so they have 1d4 HP and no weapon proficiencies, that’ll make them act like horror protagonists.
If your doing homebrew horror theme dnd campain (possibly a one shot), I have two perfect monsters for that. (False hydra, or maybe a swamp hag), If your using one of those monsters then have your player's play as new characters but as children aspiring to become real adventures.

I ran a horror game 3 days ago and one character had a horse named Shia LaBeouf so when I heard "you see Shia LaBeouf" I honestly laughed. And my players act like that all the time. Ive heard them say the almost exact same things sometimes, like "but arent the plants alive?" So good job, a perfect representation of an average horror game, at least the few I've experianced.

Sometimes you gotta make your own horror. Back in the day my group ONLY played in Ravenloft except for me, so when I offered to run a game set there for halloween they were all excited. Imagine their faces when the mists covered covered them then cleared to reveal...a vibrant colored field of flowers and trees and...animated chocolate bunny's? The domain was a combination of Candyland, the Wizard of Oz and Charlie and the Chocolate factory with a little bit of Hazel and Gretel thrown in for spice. They found that the town's people had all been turned into life sized gingerbread cookies, that there was no source of non-candy food or drink at all. They fought Dire gummy bears, the lollipop guild (dwarves driven insane who used giant sharpened lollipops as axes), the tinman (an iron golem) and eventually William the Wonked the supposed master of this domain, a mad elf wizard that lived in a secluded candy castle, that unbeknownst to the players served as the prison for Hanzel the MORBIDLY obese cannibal that craved naught but human flesh.
Yup. Definitely an “oh no he didn’t” moment. Oddly enough, I’m running Curse of Strahd tonight and my Tails of Equestria books are coming in the mail tomorrow. There was no connection between these two things until this video happened.

I once held a quest where they had to investigate a village that ended up pretty much as a ghost town in a matter of days. In there, the players managed to find a place where they could hear sobbing, after forcing some locks they found a group of four kids, sick and starving, they we're being sold as slaves soons but haven't seen their captors in a couple days so they were having a real bad time. There was a very noisy boy, two girls one pretty, one with visible injuries and a very silent kid that never says anything, just communicated moving his head. They rescued them but still had to continue the quest so they brought them along. After fighting weird deformed monsters all through out, the party realized someone was messing with dark magic and eventually tried summoning something but miss gauged the ammount of "sacrifice needed" taking himself and the entire town along with him. At some point the party split up and so did the kids, when meeting up one of the girls was missing, the pretty one, when asked about it the kids seems confused, specially when the mage said he had promised to keep all four of then alive. Then the quiet kid, confused, finally started talking and said, "but when you rescued us... We were only three" And right as i was about to call for an initiative roll, i saw the "unnerving reflex" on two of my players as well as a lot of confusion and surprise in the other two. I someone managed to make the noisy kid's roleplay in a way that the player interaction wasn't odd for the other kids, while never having the other kids interact with him. And as they finally figured that out, i called for an initiative roll for the quest's climax. It was one of my proudest moments as a DM

I was in what was planned to be a spooky game the night before Halloween, which got derailed because the DM had a card player in the tavern with a magic item he rolled on. It was the Deck of Many Things and he used an online generator to draw the cards. He thought we'd be scared, but we went for it. Ended up spending all night drawing cards. What's funny is the generator was broken, so none of us ended up getting anything bad. As soon as we quit because it was time to log off for the night, the DM draws one more card out of game to see what happens. It's Ruin. ;) Was a fun night of Russian Roulette. Half of the party jumped from level 5 to 9. Our Ranger is deciding if his cards were so good that he's going to retiring from adventuring.
I'm DMing a Halloween one-shot for my friends on the 25th. And since it's in the spirit of halloween, it's got spooky stuff, but is mostly just dumb silliness(since our campaign is usually in a more gritty setting). The party will happen across dumb skeletons that speak common, just bickering to each other. There will be an overdramatic vampire boss, a Lich Skull that follows the party making halloween puns. And each character gets their own Halloween-themed magic item.
In my current campaign, I unintentionally once ran an incredibly scary session (according to my players). The campaign focuses on an invasion of a swarm of creatures called Svärmfa from a faraway universe. Svärmfa are basically like slivers from MtG: highly adaptable to absolutely any and every situation they come across, and they share these adaptations with other nearby Svärmfa. The players were on an island that the Svärmfa had a colony on, and were camped out for the night. They had leomund's tiny hut up, right in the middle of a village of slaughtered orcs. The players kept waking up during the night, but couldn't figure out why. Eventually, a player rolled high enough to figure out that a bunch of fully invisible Svärmfa had surrounded them. I was just playing this group of the creatures like I thought they would act: stealthy, waiting in ambush, striking from just out of reach. The players eventually figured out how to deal with them, and used AoE spells to cause the Svärmfa to drop their invisibility. I was pleased with how the players got out of the situation. What I didn't expect was how apparently terrifying this ability was. The players seemed deeply concerned about the prospect that the Svärmfa could just be invisible anywhere, and have been on high alert ever since.
i ran a horror game where the party has no prior memories of how they ended up in this ritsy town with the mayor's mansion on a hill. they were cordially invited to a ball where they danced and would roll a perception check every so often until they noticed different things being off like the faces of the dancers having cracks in them and the movements being somewhat mechanical until the lights flicked off and all the dancers vanished. the mansion no longer looking as immaculate as before the party explored and found various marionettes and dolls being manipulated by strings. they followed the strings into a den of webs where a demonic spider was manipulating them from.
I knew doing a pure horror game of DnD wouldn't work so instead, for a oneshot, I had the players start in a Hallow's eve festival where everyone was celebrating, but as the sun set and the moon came out, the story became darker and darker with actual monsters showing up among the costumed villagers. I didn't know if it would work at first but by the end of the night I actually got a few good scares out of them. I think the problem with "horror" oneshots is that there's usually not enough buildup of tension or suspense for the characters, so I decided to have more of gentle descent into fear and chaos.
Shia LaBeouf is a challenge rating 25 monster. You can't just simply expect him to appear that early in the campaign!

At some point the party split up and so did the kids, when meeting up one of the girls was missing, the pretty one, when asked about it the kids seems confused, specially when the mage said he had promised to keep all four of then alive.
Then the quiet kid, confused, finally started talking and said, "but when you rescued us... We were only three"
And right as i was about to call for an initiative roll, i saw the "unnerving reflex" on two of my players as well as a lot of confusion and surprise in the other two.
I someone managed to make the noisy kid's roleplay in a way that the player interaction wasn't odd for the other kids, while never having the other kids interact with him.
And as they finally figured that out, i called for an initiative roll for the quest's climax.
It was one of my proudest moments as a DM

Oml I was just running a “spooky” DnD game for my scout group and this literally all happened plus they set the Tiefling on fire and tried to interrogate flesh golums
Taking a full bite, chewing for a moment, swishing it about in the cheek, eyes trailing off in thought. The clever ranger's eyebrows peak, his eyes now locked in a direction, as he spits out his mouth's contents all over his own boots and declares in a loud whisper. "This way!"
I was in what was planned to be a spooky game the night before Halloween, which got derailed because the DM had a card player in the tavern with a magic item he rolled on. It was the Deck of Many Things and he used an online generator to draw the cards. He thought we'd be scared, but we went for it. Ended up spending all night drawing cards. What's funny is the generator was broken, so none of us ended up getting anything bad. As soon as we quit because it was time to log off for the night, the DM draws one more card out of game to see what happens. It's Ruin. ;)
Was a fun night of Russian Roulette. Half of the party jumped from level 5 to 9. Our Ranger is deciding if his cards were so good that he's going to retiring from adventuring.
I'm DMing a Halloween one-shot for my friends on the 25th. And since it's in the spirit of halloween, it's got spooky stuff, but is mostly just dumb silliness(since our campaign is usually in a more gritty setting). The party will happen across dumb skeletons that speak common, just bickering to each other. There will be an overdramatic vampire boss, a Lich Skull that follows the party making halloween puns. And each character gets their own Halloween-themed magic item.
This is how I run my games. Take it seriously, but leave room for the players to have fun

It didn't dawn on me until right at the end of the sketch that this was a Grimhollow ad the whole time. Well done.
In my current campaign, I unintentionally once ran an incredibly scary session (according to my players). The campaign focuses on an invasion of a swarm of creatures called Svärmfa from a faraway universe. Svärmfa are basically like slivers from MtG: highly adaptable to absolutely any and every situation they come across, and they share these adaptations with other nearby Svärmfa.
The players were on an island that the Svärmfa had a colony on, and were camped out for the night. They had leomund's tiny hut up, right in the middle of a village of slaughtered orcs. The players kept waking up during the night, but couldn't figure out why. Eventually, a player rolled high enough to figure out that a bunch of fully invisible Svärmfa had surrounded them. I was just playing this group of the creatures like I thought they would act: stealthy, waiting in ambush, striking from just out of reach. The players eventually figured out how to deal with them, and used AoE spells to cause the Svärmfa to drop their invisibility.
I was pleased with how the players got out of the situation. What I didn't expect was how apparently terrifying this ability was. The players seemed deeply concerned about the prospect that the Svärmfa could just be invisible anywhere, and have been on high alert ever since.
It doesn't help that humans reactions to being scared include laughing and cracking jokes :')
i ran a horror game where the party has no prior memories of how they ended up in this ritsy town with the mayor's mansion on a hill. they were cordially invited to a ball where they danced and would roll a perception check every so often until they noticed different things being off like the faces of the dancers having cracks in them and the movements being somewhat mechanical until the lights flicked off and all the dancers vanished. the mansion no longer looking as immaculate as before the party explored and found various marionettes and dolls being manipulated by strings. they followed the strings into a den of webs where a demonic spider was manipulating them from.

I knew doing a pure horror game of DnD wouldn't work so instead, for a oneshot, I had the players start in a Hallow's eve festival where everyone was celebrating, but as the sun set and the moon came out, the story became darker and darker with actual monsters showing up among the costumed villagers. I didn't know if it would work at first but by the end of the night I actually got a few good scares out of them. I think the problem with "horror" oneshots is that there's usually not enough buildup of tension or suspense for the characters, so I decided to have more of gentle descent into fear and chaos.
