  • Les Misérables
    Live in Amsterdam, Netherlands
    1992
    Starring: Henk Poort (JVJ), Ernst Daniel Smid (Javert), Pia Douwes (Fantine), Paul de Leeuw (Thenardier), Simone Kleinsma (Mme Thenardier), Vera Mann (Eponine), Bill Van Dijk (Enjolras), Danny de Munk (Marius), Joke de Kuijf (Cosette)
    This is one of my favorite Les Mis videos of all time. It seems to be a proshot by the company so the quality and filming are really good. The cast is incredible, everybody is incredibly well suited to their roles. And the pacing of the show is brilliant! The show runs nearly 3 hours because they took their time and allowed the show to breathe and flow properly.
    All in all, it makes for an amazing video. Enjoy!

      Ernst Daniel Smid is a famous baritone in the Netherlands. He even had his own TV show featuring great voices from opera to musical, etc. This was long before the big Idol and X-Factor, Got Talent and The Voice shows.

    I think Henk Poort is one of the best Valjeans ever. Have always liked him but have never sat and watched his performance like I did tonight and he is just amazing. Not only is his voice a joy to listen to (it has so many colors and beautifully rich and deep as well as strong falsetto and high notes) his acting is very strong.
    Also, I think this may the first time I see the Lovely Ladies groping each other. They've always been affectionate toward each other, sometimes even frisky but here they are full-on lesbians, lol.

    After realizing that Ernst is also the Dutch singing voice for Frollo, seeing him as Javert is so perfect since he played two of Victor Hugo’s greatest villains

    This is amazing! I never saw this production live unfortunately. I only saw bits and pieces of it on TV and later online. And I believe the Original Dutch Cast Recording was my 4th musical album I ever bought. I played that CD over and over until I knew the entire show by heart. I love finally seeing this! I'm so happy that it got preserved. I know it's against the rules, but this production is believed to have been the start of the Dutch musical stardom as it was in the 90's and early 2000. It brought forth some of its biggest stars who were unknowns at the time.
    However, the leading cast list as mentioned above is not accurate to this particular performance. I believe it is as follows:
    * Jean Valjean - Henk Poort
    * Javert - Ernst Daniel Smid
    * Fantine - Pia Douwes
    * Thenardier - Door van Boeckel
    * Mme. Thenardier - Irene Kuiper
    * Eponine - Marika Lansen
    * Enjolras - Bill van Dijk
    * Marius - Danny de Munk
    * Cosette - Joke de Kruijf
    * Grantaire - Peter de Smet
    In the ensemble I think I recognize:
    [Lovely Ladies]
    * Crone (who buys Fantine's hair) - Doris Baaten
    * Bamatabois - Peter de Smet
    [Paris]
    * Old Beggar Woman - Margot Giselle
    * Prostitute - Maya Hakvoort
    * Betty Vermeulen
    I even believe I recognize a friend of mine from many years ago as Young Cosette - Tae Soon Meddens. But, just like most of the above, it's really hard to tell.

    • @ellisgreen6615
      @ellisgreen6615 3 года назад +1

      You're right on Tae Soon. But Feuilly is being played by Greg Shand.
      As for the rest:
      Combeferre - Arnold Le Belle
      Jean Prouvaire - Filip Bolluyt
      Joly - Rolf Koster
      Courfeyrac - Edwin de Jongh
      Lesgles - Bert Luttjeboer
      Montparnasse - Rick Somsen
      Claquesous - Thomas Hurter
      Babet - Rik Luycx
      Burjon - Robert Valter
      Young Cosette - Tae Soon Meddens
      Young Eponine - Lucretia *something Russian"
      Gavroche - Florus van der Linde
      The remaining Female ensemble I can't tell with 100% accuracy. They changed the tracks between this production and the one I did. And since they have almost no lines and all look alike it's too hard to tell.

    John Napier's set designs sure had longevity at that theatre between "Cats" which was replaced by (and later replaced) "Les Miserables" (as I understand it, the set for the Original Dutch production of "Cats" moved to Paris, then *BACK* to Amsterdam?)

    The Eponine here doesn't sound nor look like Vera Mann. There is another video of this production that I have and is of comparable quality that has Vera Mann as Eponine. The actress here has a higher-pitched, more nasal voice than Mann. You can clearly see it isn't Vera during the closeup of her face in "On My Own."
    It's nice to see that the person filming this had the sense to zoom out during "On My Own" to capture the almost-never captured lovely stage picture of Eponine center stage with all those warmly glowing but shuttered windows all around her. I've said this in various other threads but it is strange how most people who do boots of Les Mis fail to capture the whole scene for that song. They always do super closeups of Eponine and ignore the overall scene which is frustrating as that is one of my fave visual scenes of the show. My video with Vera Mann also zooms out during this song but it doesn't capture the upper level of the set. This is one of the only videos that captures the whole set for that song. There are literally like 2 other videos in the entire bootleg and pro video archives of Les Mis performances that even bother showing even a glimpse of the set during "On My Own." Most bootleggers seem drawn to Eponine's pores and nose hair for some very oddly frustrating reason and ignore that melancholy and beautiful stage picture.

      @@MarkvanBeelen That's awesome! I love her "On My Own." Unlike many, she is in-synch with the orchestra and her emotional journey during the song is clearly influenced and marries well with the orchestration. That always makes for a more thrilling performance when actress and orchestra blend together in the storytelling. A lot of Eponine's just stand there and have one expression. Marika's expressions fluctuate as the orchestra becomes more intense in its emotional buildup. Gotta love that thrilling thundrous timpani and Marika's "I've only been pretending!"

    Great cast and wonderful archive of the amazing original staging, lighting, choreography, costumes and unedited score. The “new” staging is crap! Everything is amateurish. The costumes are too bright, the singing is rushed and shouty, the score is so edited, the One Day More choreography is laughable and there are hanging electrical lamps over the worker women’s table during At The End Of The Day when there were no electric lamps in 1823 France! 😠
