First Mow On My Renovated Lawn // 20 Days after Fixing my Lawn

- Today I do my first mow on my overseeded lawn that I've fixed up! Today I decided to use a push reel mower so I didn't put too much weight on the lawn and for the fun of it. This video was on day 20 since I renovated the lawn.

Works great! ruclips.net/user/postUgkxprGGPRQoChQaA8u58dt7miEpxQBKiWeJ More difficult with longer grass, though, but I was expecting that. I have a small back yard, it seemed like overkill to buy a lawnmower with an engine. This is easy to carry in and out of the basement through the bulkhead. Very sharp (be careful). At the back of the mower are little wheels, which I use when pulling the mower backwards, so it's easy to readjust direction. I'm including a photo which shows the before and after for my lawn when it was at its longest. For long grass like that you really have to put some muscle into it, and I needed to go into a new section of grass with some momentum, but when the grass is only an inch or two higher than regular cut height it's quite easy. The lawn is still patchy and full of weeds, but at least it's a good height! A step in the right direction.
its funny you see this lawn and think its needs a mow. i look at mine at this level and say it got another 3 weeks
Me too 😅
When you walked into the gardening area in Bunnings I could smell that
wow a green lawn, mine is looking like the bricks on your house.
this summer hasn't treated it well....
Hasn't been good has it man. Hoping next season is full of rain
@@LawnTips are you kidding me? I live in the UK and we get TOO much rain lol
At least it doesnt look like his roof
The burden of invading another continent
I dont have any grass on my property, yet im so addicted to these vids.
I just love everything about lawn and the first 3-4 weeks are just great to watch how everything germinates and thickens up. That bad boy is coming along really good...!
I just finished mowing my lawn, now I get to watch a "lawn tip vid!"
YAY the classic Victa finally. True Australian mower founded in the early 1900’s yay so excited
Ben, Believe it or not this was the fist mower that my father introduced me too when learning to mow lawn. It tells how old some of us are, LOL
Hey’ I have the same mower. Cutting Santa Anna couch at 10mm. Love it
Just like anytime I hit a small stone or twig I didn’t see with my Rover reel mower... makes a man wanna cry 😭
Really
Zachary Winch it sucks hey man. Devoooo
It's enough to make a grown man cry, and that's okay.
Your vids teaching me loads but above all not to panic! Cant wait to get out there! (UK)
Literally mowed my lawn this arvo and dropped the height 2 notches on the mower then a nice litter shower afterwards. Awesome Vid keen for more updates. Would love to get my grass looking like this.
Perennial Rye is great, my favourite grass. Getting ready to do some overseeding this Autumn. The temps are good, mid 20's.
Your lawn is looking great Ben! Great work.
i feel like if someone messed up ur newly made lawn, youd just go "aw man, ya serious, aw" and just, fix it even better than the first time
Coming along nicely Ben!
Dual cab ute. Still jams things on the back seat..😂😂😂 love it. Me too
The lawn tips are all in the grass catcher! 😉
Comming along nicely Ben two to three weeks it will look good
Awesome job n commitments
I rent and have crap lawn and never even cared to much for lawn but for some reason I love your vids
Great videos mate! Really enjoying watching and think you will inspire a lot of us to have a great lawn too someday :) (had always wondered how you had a golf course lawn)
Dang son! That has come along quite a bit! 👍😎👌
These videos are surprisingly entertaining
Looking good man! Keep going!
I like the reel mower when you quit pushing the blade keeps going.
I started my first reno mow with my Ol push reel, but switched to powered reel after two passes.
Yo mate what up. Thanks for another lawn tip vid.👍🏼
Looking good my man.
You are so patient! My lawn is terrible - it’s embarrassing really 😬 I just don’t think I’m meant to have lawn!
Thanks Uncle Ben. :)
I got a cheapo Saxon one from bunnings. I'm always hitting sticks and bark hard. Never had it change the sound or visibly damage the blade.
"and now for the second cut..." "the what?!"
Got the same mower. When come across chips from mulch or debris off trees; goodbye blade integrity. Cheap and nasty. Lots of backlapping gets me onto the next lawn mow day. Cheers.
Great vid mate
Lol 10 centimeters. I let mine get about 3 inches. Great video bud!!! Very cool.
Best way to have a beautifully green lawn is to do it at the end of summer cause heat burns and dehydrate the grass .. heads up lovely video bud !! .
Love your lawn videos. Off topic a bit but what are those tree bush things in your garden that are flowering? I wouldn't mind one for my place. Thanks
Ive got that exact victa and tbh its pretty good for its price 😂 does the job
Lookin good boi 🤙
The best lawns I have seen have been maintained by old retired blokes, who use the same type of push mover as the Victa in this video. They mowed three times a day and it showed. Razor sharp blades, they do a 10x better job than a standard petrol mower.
Look at the cut edges of the grass. Push mower looks like its been cut by a razor, motor mower beats the grass to death, crushes ends, so grows back ragged.
Love the color! Coming along. Good vid. We just made one as well. Keep up the good work.
I used a manual reel after my lawn reno. Hit a tiny piece of mulch and took the handle right in the gut. They stop on a dime and you keep going. LOL !! They work great though.
Hahaha I've done that before 😂 know exactly how you feel
Yeah bad boy, welcome to another laaawn tip vid.
So at 0:33 your lawn already looks perfect...I’m defeated before the demo even started lol
I've got one of them Victa push mowers, and since watching your vids, I've tried converting the mower to an electric haha. I used an escooter motor, and dodgy'd up a pvc roller at the back as well hahaha. Just waiting for some cordless drill batteries for it.
😂😂 New channel idea - modded lawn care gear
@@dude-yg7tj... Challenge accepted! 😂
I have a hand mower one of the best things i noticed on my lawn it needs a bit of weight to the mower as it can skip across top a little plus i topdressed my kikuyu a week ago and looks good how long you recommend before mow and is once a week good for liquid fert.
Cheers mate
A bit of a tick! Well done mate.
what type of grass do you have in your back garden? looks great :)
Thanks for the video. I just bought one . My grass isn't that high but I keep getting stuck and it's Soo hard to push . What setting do I have it on ? It only works in the lower level grass areas .or am I doing something wrong and haven't adjusted something? Any help would be great. I'm on buffalo grass.
this mans music choice is dope
Hey mate, how do you find the Victa push mower and can these mower create the stripes like a proper cylinder mower ?
Hey mate I have Santa Anna I live in western Sydney just wondering a good fertiliser to apply now going into autumn 👍 your channel I superb, you’ve got me hooked😉 anything at Bunnings do the job?
It's definitely moving along! Once it's completely back, do you have any plans to show some time-lapse photos from the drone?
I'll put together a video for sure with the progress pics 👌🏽
Will the perenial ryegrass take a beating with the heat you guys get? What is it, end of summer there now?
You should build a path around the perimeter of your house, it’s not ideal to irrigate up against your house foundations. Love the vids! Keep up the good work.
Not only that, but I always tell people to design your lawn so that minimal, if any, string trimming is needed. I have a string trimmer, but the last time I used it was about 3 years ago.
@Cliff Warren ... that’s what I always think about when doing my landscaping. It just saves so much time.
Cliff Warren yeah for sure, but Im more concerned about excess water soaking the house foundations, it can cause issues with movement etc....
Ron Hunter yeah for sure, but Im more concerned about excess water soaking the house foundations, it can cause issues with movement etc....
Can you show us how to backlap the manual mower?
What did you think of the Victa? I considered getting one for the harder to reach spots. Love the aerial footage, really shows how much of a difference there is.
Theyre impossible to sharpen, I reckon from the shove you give them to get going the quality of cuts not much nicer than using ole reliable megamulch or line trimmer if its real hard to get to
Cut was nice where the lawn wasn't too thick. If you mowed every few days it would be awesome. Couldn't use it once a week of the lawn is healthy and thick.
Don’t bother buying one there rubbish ! Google search reviews
I’ve got the Masport version coming, looking forward to that nice roller mower finish next week 👍
Ben! We took ours to the recycle center at the tip when we left... you could have had ours bro
Man, wish I had of grabbed it from you guys!
What type of sand do you use for the bare spots?
Hey guys how to you sharpen the blades on the reel?
I have that same mower and can't get those beautiful lawn stripes? Does a reel mower do better stripes because the roller is heavier?
After you get to this stage 20 days after seeding, are you atill watering 4 times a day? When do you stop watering 4 times a day and for regular maintenance how often should I water it
i noticed your putter left out against the utility box on your putting green is that so your neighbors could putt on there if they'd like?
How do you mow areas where you can still the sand/soil and not pull out thin germinating grass?
What do you prefer auto mower or normal mower?
I personally think his lawn looks amazing..... when he's not cutting it every day lol. Maybe it's cuz I'm a tall fescue kinda guy, but i intentionally let my lawn go 2-3 weeks between mows cuz i love the look of tall thick green grass
I couldn't see it anywhere, but is it Kentucky Blue grass you're laying?
Hi mate, just curious about why you chose to use a non motorised mower?
Is it more gentle on a new lawn?
How do we get a nice pattern on the lawn? Stripes.
Is that Victa worth buying, only have a small erea
That 'moist' at 2:33 made my skin crawl..XD
Would you recommend one of these for me to start out on?? Is it worth the money??
Worked well but doesn't like wetter conditions of NZ the wheel bearings that is even with plenty of wd 40 after every use I never need the catcher
Cheers! Happy almost spring. Quick question, preventative weed killer? When would be a good time to through that down? Before or after seed/fert. Thanks man
You can do it either before or after mate! Shouldn’t really make too much of a difference.
Never put down before seed though because it will stop the seed coming up. Usually you have to wait about 3 months after putting seed down to put down a pre-emergent. The only one you will be safe with in the states in Tenacity.
So jealous! We are still a few weeks away from mowing in the UK thanks to the two big storms we had. Are you planning on doing an update on Josh's lawn soon as last time we saw it it was not looking great. Be nice to see how it's doing now.
Months
I did mine Tuesday.
Your neighbors must envy you.
Amigo como haces para tener el césped así y que producto estas usando oara llenar las partes?
Oh you got that from Bunnings
Wicked. 👌
You are cool
It is looking Great Ben! Question what do you spray as a herbicide on Perennial ryegrass? I want to kill the weeds but not my grass what should I do? Thanks
Try nortron
Hello, Is it possible to make my very dry and barren front and backyard lush again without a sprinkler system? i am in Upstate NY, Thank you
Holy crap that backyard footpath next door is a little overgrown haha.
wd the blades and gears when wet
How low can a manual reel mower cut?
Hi, what's the name of the song at minute 4:20? thanks
Why not use the power reel?
Is it bad for the lawn to mow it when it's wet?
Nobody: RUclips recommendations: watch this guy mow his lawn please
What’s the song at 3:15?
I’m sure you’ve answered this before, but what’s your camera setup?
Mr Sims! Your Kiwi self has failed you. Toss that Victa and get a Masport Cleveland. Twigs, bark, mulch, gum nuts, nothing seems to trouble it. Knife is replaceable as is the cylinder and you can grind it! Absolute weapon. Best thing to come out of NZ since whatever we've claimed as Aussie. 😁
I'm tempted to try the masport out, good to know they're the real deal.
@@paulmckee476 it's agricultural, but in a good way. Not 1960s overbuilt and heavy, but still built solidly from good quality metal.
Woohoo, I’m early Lol 😂
Hey Mate, Nice vids and turf!I mow my TifTuf with a rotary mower, I keep it low (for a rotary), around 35mm, but get some scalping in areas.Would that Victa push mower cut thick TifTuf? I was thinking of doing a higher pass with the rotary mower and then go over it with the manual reel mower for the clean cut. What do you think?
I have tiftuf as well and wondered how the victa reel mower would go?
what’s the song at 3:15 ? song awesome :)
What type of grass is this?
Unrelated note, What wristwatch is that?
