Just when me and my husband thought you couldn't get any cooler, you pull that Brooks saddle out. I biked from China to Italy on that saddle and my bum never hurt, not even one day! Great choice 👏🏻
I love your videos so much. Thanks for the content. I really appreciate how you show how your trees have progressed since you started them. I feel inspired. Tomorrow I am going to finally attempt my first bonsai.
Thanks, yes I gave the bike a bit of a polish today, It didn't come up really shiny, only in some parts. I'm looking into some new wheels for it also, the current ones have some bad spokes and the spokes are quite rusty. I'll keep all the patina on the rest of the bike.
Loving the deadwood features here, they seem to add a lot of fluidity to the trunk line! There are a few trees around me in the peak district that look like the Witches Tree, where a massive limb has broken off and the tree has tried its best to recover. As always, I cant wait to see how these trees develop!
Hi Nigel , great fun packed video as always , love seeing the different aspects and life of the legend that is Nigel ! My dad never went anywhere without a brookes saddle on his bike , he had his bike stolen once and the second he got a new bike , off he went to get a new broker saddle and new Tin of saddle soap to lovingly care for it , by the way he was from Birmingham , and bit of useless information for you , people from Birmingham are known as “brummies” with a very distinct accent . I’ve been on my bonsai journey for 2 years now , it’s been a 2nd year weird year ... nothing has thrived , just waiting for spring again now and waiting to get stuck in again , all the best Nigel
Thanks you Peter, a very interesting bit of history! I put a plastic bag over my Brooks saddle so no one can see it when I ride in town. One one would guess it has such a nice seat on the rat rod bike! I hope you have a good green summer!
Stunning!! Really like what you did there Nigel, looking forward following it's progress. and that bicycle saddle is awesome! indeed craftsmen ship. Wishing you many comfortable miles! 💖👍😊💖
I love the saddle :) Although I think the 'nose' of the saddle is a bit too high. My nest saddle will be also Brooks. I went through few modern ones made of either some composites or ecological leather and they did not last more than three years. I cannot wait already. Nigel, you inspired me both to start bonsai hobby and to replace my saddle (for me and my wife) :D
Loved seeing the clip about the bike seat. Was wondering if you had received it. Really like what you have done to this bonsai. Its secrets will be revealed as the layers of soil erode off the rock. Thanks for another interesting video
I just did a root-over-rock. I covered all of the roots with soil and I wasn’t sure if that’s correct because people always say the roots are “partially buried.” Well, it looks like I did it just fine. I just need to add moss because each time I water, the soil washes away and I always have to cover the roots back up. Thanks, Nigel!!
Another excellent bonsai video. Also enjoyed seeing the Brooks saddle. l live close to Birmingham England and will look into getting myself a new saddle with springs. The l have now is so uncomfortable. Thanks Nigel.
Love the bike segments Nigel. Hope you show us the new seat post installation when it arrives. I live just north of Birmingham, UK. My Dad was a big Brooks fan.
I really like the idea of duplicating trees from nature... Those two trees really look gnarly and old... They already have something spiritual about them. I'm really looking for some good white cedar Material here in Germany, I guess you inspired me! I wanna duplicate the main tree from your avatar grove ! Really appreciate your content! 👏🏻
What a great video ! I enjoyed the saddle opening, install and test ride on your bike as much as watching you work on your witches tree root over rock ! 👌👌👍I hope I can try that bike out sometime.😀
Thanks J, a bit of an unboxing video! I sure need to take a trip to Chris Hendry's, maybe we could drive separately and meet down there, keeping our distance? Let me know what you think!
i think a mound of muck or a plastic wall lining the inner edge of the pot may be useful in that root over rock project, seems like the "water table" being so low may lead to drying out pretty fast. everything looks great tho, i love that old school bike, maybe update us as the leather ages :)
Thanks, I'll have to keep it well watered until the roots take hold in the soil that fills the pot! Thanks, I'm really enjoying the old bike, I'm going to be getting new wheels soon. I'll be sure to give an update!
Hi Nigel, Your content has inspired me to take up Bonsai as a hobby. I now have several trees growing from seed and intend to visit my local bonsai club in Leeds, UK. Something I would love to see you explain in detail is why you choose to make the cuts and style choices you make. I see you saying "that needs to come off" etc. But I wish I could know what is the overall rationale for your choices. I think it will help others learn. Thanks for your work I look forward to seeing more videos! Sam
Thanks, the bottom line is that I like the Brooks saddle! Yes I hope all goes well with the tree and some day we'll all see the roots grow and grip the rock like it was always there!
Hi Nigel, nice video as always :) My own little cedar isen't doing well. I've repotted it 3 weeks ago and since yesterday it's starting to dry out massivly. I'm afraid he won't survive :'(. To my knowledge, the soil has never completely dried out. Any advice ?
Thanks for another awesome video Nigel. Could I ask where you normally get your turface from? I'm having a hard time finding some locally. Was also wondering what thrift store you get those inexpensive scissors from? Thanks again!
I get my turface "SafetySorb" from TSC stores, they are a farm supply store. The scissors are from KW surplus. They sell all kinds of surplus items and have a couple of stores in the province.
Speaking of replicas: I recently watched the 2019 Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club again and I though a landscape planting of the 12th hole, aka. "Golden Bell", would look really nice. It's overall one of the nicest looking golf courses in the world I think. I don't have the material yet to grow such a forest / landscape planting, but it's something I'd like to try out one day when I have the right pot and trees for it. The Brooks saddle and the trees look good. I'm looking forward to part two.
in have 2 thuja bushes in my front yard split open from heavy snow. I'm thinking of air layering each branch. about 15 in all. about 1-2 inches thick.i just don't know if it would work or when I should do it... any suggestions? left a like.
It is best to repot your tropical trees just before a period of good growth. Many trees go dormant in hot weather, so I think the best time would be towards the end of the hot summer. The rainy period is probably a good time to repot many trees also, just not succulent ones!
Hello Nigel, as usual a great video. Personally, you have instilled a profound passion for bonsai and renewed my latent interest in trees; I cannot thank you enough. You are an amazing inspiration. Not sure if you heard, a 350 year old Scots pine ( Pinus sylvestris) growing perilously on a rocky headland jutting into the reservoir of the Vir Dam, in the Czech Republic, is the European Tree of the Year 2020. Ref. treeoftheyear.org Warm regards from Selva, London, England.
Yes, it was upside down, I think because the smaller diameter end was too small for most modern bicycle seats. I have a new taller seat post on order and I'm going to get new wheels also, the current ones have a lot of rusty broken spokes.
I'll have to see how the tree grows, I will probably need to sort out the roots in future and keep the best ones. I don't think I want all the roots growing over the rock as it may be too many.
ahh no way reacreating real life stuffs? art should be about creating something new that never existed before that's the whole point of the existance of artists they live to create beauty that couldn't have existed without them. for me the most boring worst part of bonsai is recreating something very specific, and now dun get me wrong like i LOVE very hyperrealistic plantings that mimic nature to the fullest but it's the emphasis is on mimicing it should mimic but not outright copy it's okay to gather inspiration we all need it sometimes there are times when we can't just inspire ourselves... but at the end of the they we should ALWAYS try to aim for creating something new... but hey that's absolutely just my humble opinion... also if we're already talkin bout our favorite parts of bonsai my fav is putting the rocks into the planting or planting on rocks XĐ i dunno why but for be it's just it's always when you put in the rocks that the planting becomes really miniature... or well maybe adding the moss too that would be my second favorite part
Thanks Robi, bonsai has to be relatable to evoke emotion in the person viewing it. It needs to remind them of a time or place they have been or a place they dream of going. If the bonsai becomes too abstract, it becomes a technical exercise in precise wiring or tree manipulation. To get a natural looking tree that draws a person into the illusion, is the aim of bonsai for me. Taking the art in new directions is fine, just like paintings, there is abstract, realistic, impressionistic and many other styles. I enjoy styling trees to resemble trees you see in nature, that is what appeals to me. I like to create a piece of nature in miniature and I'll leave the other styles to other artists. I do appreciate the other styles of bonsai, but it is not what appeals to me personally. I love rock collecting, I find many of them at the beach. I like to collect ones that look really good when wet. I place them around my trees and when I'm watering, I wet them and see the beautiful colours!
Hello I made a bonsai pot for my mystery tree and if you could please go to my channel and guess what type of tree I have and tell me if you think my homemade pot would look good with the tree also I am revealing the tree on Tuesday and great videos I wish I could do all that
The philosophy of allowing inspiration from Nature is much appreciated.
Thanks, I think that's what the channel is all about, learning to love all trees!
Just when me and my husband thought you couldn't get any cooler, you pull that Brooks saddle out. I biked from China to Italy on that saddle and my bum never hurt, not even one day! Great choice 👏🏻
You are the bob Ross of bonsai! Tysm for your videos and knowledge 🤘🏽
Thank you Ian!
🚲The saddle looks great and it's quality stands out.
🌳I love the addition of the transportation videos.🚲
I learn so much from you. I call you one of my teachers. Thank you. Tim
I love your videos so much. Thanks for the content. I really appreciate how you show how your trees have progressed since you started them. I feel inspired. Tomorrow I am going to finally attempt my first bonsai.
great.. perfect video if you simultaneously want to learn bonsai and install a bicycle seat
I can’t wait to see the development with these trees! Looking good 👍
Really awesome saddle, love the color! Now just the body of the bike needs a little love lol!
Thanks, yes I gave the bike a bit of a polish today, It didn't come up really shiny, only in some parts. I'm looking into some new wheels for it also, the current ones have some bad spokes and the spokes are quite rusty. I'll keep all the patina on the rest of the bike.
very enjoyable Nigel, thank you! (that bicycle seat is lovely... looks like it belongs in a fine art museum!)
I love your real life miniatures! It makes them even more realistically miniature, I think, because you have something to compare them to. :)
Thanks Zack, it should be fun working on these trees over the years ahead!
The new Rolls saddle is impressive!
I love it, it's well broken in and really comfortable!
Very interesting solution with the roots over the rock. Looks so good even though the goal has not yet been reached.
I think that some day in the future the roots will thicken and have nice bark on them just like the trunk. I'm looking forward to seeing it develop!
That was a great upgrade for both the bike and the planting! Great! Always moving forward!
Thanks Alvaro, I'm looking at getting a new set of wheels for the bike also.
Impressive technique. I love the look of this witches tree on rock!
Thank you Elisabeth, I'm hoping to plant the Little Cedar Spirit Tree tomorrow!
I really love my brooks saddle too, great video
I put a plastic bag over the seat whenever I ride it downtown, I've heard people will steal Brooks saddles and I don't want to loose mine!
Now d whole arrangement like bonsai pot, rock n plant all r looking nice👌👌👌
Really like that bicycle saddle. Beautiful color. Nice bike too.but I'm a sucker for the classics
Again great work Nigel thank you i love it
Thank you Shah!!!
I love your new saddle! lovely!
Thanks Shany, I'm using it lots! I'm still thinking about the perfect trees for the pot you made! I'll have to decide soon!

Thank you, I've just finished part 2, both trees are ready for a good future now!
another excellent video Nigel, keep up the great work 👏🏼
Thanks, will do!

Are you planning on building the gigantic greenhouse this summer? Will it be the winter storage for your crowded plant room?
Looking forward to the root reveal in a year. I think it is going to look very amazing.

Hi. Your work has always inspired me. I have a variegated thuja in my collection. It looks so beautiful. I plan to make it a bonsai someday.
This was so interesting and educational, Nigel! Thank you! You have such an excellent eye for proportion, I wonder how you learned that.

What type of carving knife do you use for your Shari features? Beautiful trees by the way.

That was wonderful! Butts to branches! Hahaha! :) I'm excited to see how it will look once exposed... I don't have a time machine... :P Be safe Nigel!

That would be master piece one of the best par 3s in the world good luck
Yes that would be really awesome, you would have to prune your moss short to make it look very miniature!
@@TheBonsaiZone why don't you try I am sure you can make it I would love to see just think about it
i really like all your videos.sir how can cuttings produce more roots?what method would you prefer sir.?thank you..i hope you answer.

Hi Nigel. I am from India. Here it is a hot summer. Should I report my bonsai. Is it safer to report in summer.
It is best to repot your tropical trees just before a period of good growth. Many trees go dormant in hot weather, so I think the best time would be towards the end of the hot summer. The rainy period is probably a good time to repot many trees also, just not succulent ones!
The hair tied backs goes hard as shit 🤭
Where did you get your root rake/comb?
It was bought at a second hand shop 26 years ago! I can't find another like it anywhere!
Hey Nigel. Any updates on the tree growing on that wooden plank experiment?
Also: do you have an email I can send pics of my bonsai in to you?

A really awesome website, i down loaded all the tree pictures for reference! Thanks Navaratnam!
Consider putting the 'little spirit tree' on the ledge of the rock.
Hi
ceder n tuja tree are same?
I'm getting another snowstorm tomorrow =( here in Maine USA
Happy spring! We have to wait usually to the end of May before we get frost free nights, even then, you have to keep your eye on the weather!
Where did you get the cool bike!?
It was in the basement of our house when we moved in 25 years ago. I finally got it out and running!
Nigel, either I’m up early or you’re up very late!
I'm up late tonight!
Etonnante composition
Man it would've been so cool to add reverb to the cedar description in the beginning!
The seat post was upside down?
That's what I thought.
Yes, it was upside down, I think because the smaller diameter end was too small for most modern bicycle seats. I have a new taller seat post on order and I'm going to get new wheels also, the current ones have a lot of rusty broken spokes.
Tutorial for creat areal roots?
The roots look li!e lasagna when ypu.took it out of the pot lol.
Yes or those instant soup noodles!
At 14:53 it looks like a palm tree 🙂
I wouldn’t mess with roots for at least 5 years to let them establish on the rock
I'll have to see how the tree grows, I will probably need to sort out the roots in future and keep the best ones. I don't think I want all the roots growing over the rock as it may be too many.

Yes, sort of the reverse view!
39:06, it's a face.

Make sure your saddle is leveled. Now it looks like you are going to hurt yourself - in the long run - where you want to get hurt the least...
Thanks Patrick, I've got it just right now and getting lots of riding in on it!
You didn't use lime sulphur, the wood will be damaged by insects and it will be slow destroy all of your work
Thanks, Cedar trees are very rot resistant and insect resistant. I don't like the look of lime sulfur on dead wood, it usually looks like white paint!
