      Yes a real shame. Its central location in the borough meant it was a good social focal point.

    Thanks for sharing this - remember it well and also remember behind the baths was Cricklefields Athletics Club, and opposite was the Cauliflower pub...

      It's a pleasure. You have a good memory, the athletics track is still there (and as far as I know still has an associated club). The Cauliflower is also still standing but alas has been derelict for several years now. At least it is listed.

    I remember a few birthday parties at the baths, the large inflatable climbing toys were legendary.

      I forgot about the birthday parties there. I don't think I ever went to one but we did get to use those inflatables at the final school session of the year. It was chaos and the lifeguards had a hard time with us!

      Great to hear Fat had, such great memories for many learning how to swim there. Sounds like a few of your family generations found success in that pool.

      Yes 100% our family used to go here alot lots of happy memories. Also the frenford football club behind the swimming pool. We used to sneak through the broken metal nets and play football there best times for sure

    Not only did I spend a lot of my childhood in the summer in the large pool and go there with our school but my Mum told us they had wrestling there and would go there and watch the Crabtree brothers one of who was Shirley Crabtree wrestle (Big Daddy) who i met when I was a 9 year old. EASY EASY.!

    • @IlfordRetro
      @IlfordRetro  4 месяца назад

      Wow, you actually met Big Daddy at a local wrestling gig! Incredible. I only have a vague recollection of other events being held at the swimming baths, but like the Odeon cinemas, anywhere big enough would be used as an event space in days gone by.

      @@davidmoore2308 oh, my mistake I read your comment incorrectly. Makes sense that it was your Mum who saw the Crabtrees at Ilford - and still a big deal that you both saw him. Big Daddy passed away far too early.
