I'm a Bulgarian who has lived in the Netherlands, Denmark, and Sweden. I know that the statistics will say otherwise but i genuinely believe that people from the Balkans live much happier lives compared to northern countries. Some common things you will notice are: 1. people tend to be nicer and friendlier towards each other.
    2. balkan food is much better
    3. weather is nicer.
    4. people are less stingy
I know that this could be my biased perspective on things but alot of other people i know who aren't from the balkans have experienced the same thing. money ≠ happiness

Statistics can prove everything except the TRUTH. It is idiotic nonsense incompatible with science, founded on principles opposite to those of science. Only ignorant people and liars use statistics.

Something that we forget to mention is that especially we as Bulgarians, we love to complain. And always emphasize on how bad things are although people go out every weekend and even during the weekdays, either for a coffee, restaurants or night clubs. This doesnt measure happiness but as we know "most people in Bulgaria dont actually live day for day"

It's mostly OK. Many Bulgarians like to overexaggerate on negative sides. In fact that's the main reason we're the "unhappiest country". Often times you'd hear people saying preposterous things like "African countries are better". However this is not just a Bulgarian thing. it's a Balkan sentiment which you can find all around the region.

I’m a beagle dog named Sky 🐶. I moved to Sofia, Bulgaria from India one year ago. I find it easy to make friends here and I love the lush green parks in the city. Been to the Black Sea coast beaches and the snowy mountains already. Hoping to stay for longer if everything goes well. 🐶❤

    EU, not Europe.

BS, Bulgaria is still happier than some other countries in Europe. EU is not Europe, how many people can't understand that? Check Ukraine for example how they are dealing with their country and Zelensky's ''true'' happiness after the war. You will see way different picture there. Ukrainians are actually the unhappiest nation in Europe, because they are also the most impoverished nation too.

I don't know anybody who wants to leave. Most of my friends in the neighborhood have lived abroad and returned permanently. People do like to complain a lot because it is a good conversation starter but no one want to leave.

Bulgaria is a kleptocracy (that is what people are grappling with) and this is the result of the shock therapy imposed on the country by organizations such as the World Bank and the IMF in the early 90s. The nature is still beautiful and unparalleled - which other capital city has a mountain range like Vitosha within 30 mins reach of the city center?

    • @desssval

The country is a ruled by an oligarchy in the Russian style imposed by the former communist elite. This model is simple: criminal privatisation of the national resources by state security people turned businessmen turned politician. They plunder the EU funds and the national budget and block all efforts to reform the judicial system which gives them immunity. That is it. IMF came in Bulgaria in 1996 after a period of horrendous hyperinflation after the communist party got a majority in 1994 and made everything possible take over the national industry, banks, tourists resorts, etc. They did make all this private but ruined the country a second time after the economic collapse in the 1980s at the end of communism.
