Thank you. I found this old friend of a story with delight. I first read it at 12 and it has never left me. On this listening I'm lost in admiration for the way Jackson sets us up as Eleanor, only be carried away by Theodora. A wonderful reading. You have a magnificent voice, perfect phrasing, and just enough acting to be entertaining without distracting from the narrative. I must, since I so enjoy your work, make the suggestion that you refrain in the future from attempting an American accent. Gezbanks1277 I was born in 1956 and this film is without a doubt the scariest films ever. The scene with the pounding on the walls still gives me chills! Love listening..
This has been my favorite classic scary movie since I was a kid. I have always favored old houses & grew up in a wonderful, if modest, turn-of-the-century home complete with nooks to crawl into & windows to crawl out of. I spent a good deal of the movie yearning for a place like that. As an unrelated side note, I'm a Coloradan & in the early 80's the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, the hotel The Shining was modeled on, was bankrupt, closed a lot of the time & they were trying to sell rooms as time-shares, which wasn't going well. I went up to meet with the managing team to kick around ad ideas. The Shining had been out for several years by then and not one room was rented. I stayed alone in the place overnight -- the only "guest". No front desk after 9, no janitor. A caretaker in another house. Very nice but squeaky, creaky, & absolutely fun. I didn't see twins or anything.
What an amazing reading of this book, thank you Tony! You make the characters sound as spooky as this story. 😊 I, unlike the others, liked the newer movie with Liam Neeson and Catherine Zeta-Jones. 😊❤
This is the fourth audiobook you’ve done that I’m listening through in the last month. Absolutely captivated. Incredible work, better than a lot of professional audiobooks for purchase. The fact that it is free is truly an incredible and undeserved gift! Will support you as I can.
Your reading of it is perfect, exactly the voice of the book when I read it. I grew up in a house with wall-banging poltergeists, and it's been quiet for years since I've moved away. I moved back in a couple years ago, and still quiet. Then I listened to this all day while cleaning my brother's house next door, and an RV, and just after I settled in the kitchen I get to 3:30:00 and realize it's the wall-banging part....thanks a lot...
The best performance of much beloved Gothic horror hands down! Arthur and Mrs Montague left me in tears 😂, great work, Tony, I'm recommending you to all my friends ❤
I really enjoyed this reading of Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House. The narrator does an excellent job of bringing the story to life and providing an engaging listening experience. Thank you for your excellent work and keeping disruptive ads to a minimum.
I used to read quite a bit, and I've missed it since growing up and losing time. With your reading, I've been able to focus and annotate along in my printed book easily. Thank you! Hill House has been on my list for a long time and I believe you did Shirley Jackson's domestic style of horror justice. Removing the adds and listening to critiques are both really thoughtful things to have done (Especially with how many commenters were just downright rude about you or the book itself for discernible reason).
Though initially this seems to be a fairy standard ghost story, it rapidly evolves into an intriguing blend of suspense, gothic horror, psychological dissection, evocative imagery and the subtle manipulation of genre. It is so flawlessly narrated by Tony Walker that I could not walk away, & listened to it in one continuous sitting. Exceptionally enjoyable, thank you!
6:01:34 from chap. 8-3 "...and she was held tight (and safe. It is not cold at all, she thought, it is not cold at all. She closed her eyes and leaned back) against the bank and thought, Don't let me go..."
I've never heard of this book but dropped in for some idle ambience. I'm pleasantly surprised to have received a charming narration of an exceptional story - maybe the best ghost story I've ever heard, though I haven't read or listened to many. I don't care what the others say, I absolutely loved Dr. Montague's faux American accent; it's endearing and adds a unique, somewhat humorous spin on the character.
This is the best reading of this story I’ve ever heard. I’m a literature teacher and I now use this in class for my students! Thank you for sharing this with us!
I just cannot express how great you are. I think I almost know it by heart. I listen to it every day multiple times during the day. I can't thank you enough for this wonderful, wonderful reading of this great book. ❤
I absolutely love how the reader tells this story!!! The personalities of the characters are so distinct, I forget I'm listening to only one masterful reader. Thank you! ❤️ Favorited this so I can return & listen to again & again! ☺️
i love you i love you this book is amazing and you read it in such exquisite emotion, which made it quite easy for the listeners and readers it understand and better engage in the book. i am someone who does not particularly find interest in a willingness to read voluntarily, so when i was assigned to read this book i immediately came here and it saved me so much time. your emotion to the characters, which you can very clearly distinct the voice of each character when speaking, made it so much easier to understand which also made it easier for me to follow along. your emotion and tone made the story feel alive, immersive, in a way other readers dont, often times other readers sounding emotionless and monotone, which can very easily disinterest readers and not feel the story envelop their surroundings. i can not get over how much you helped me, this book was truly one i would not have put down if it werent for my other assignments i had to finish. the slow descent into madness, the insanity that slowly started to develop, the way elenore died without a happy ending, especially without a family who loved her, all she wanted was family and she died without one, engulfed in her own overwhelming solitude. it was truly heartbreaking, and i couldnt help but let out raw emotions peaking the end of the story. your voice was firm yet calming, riling with emotion, and i cant thank you enough for letting me experience such an amazing story in the right way, with feeling.
Thank you, I needed this right now, to calm my body and mind, and float away in a daydream…your voice soothing and imaginative at the same time…truly brilliant….cannot wait for another audio book, read by you….❤
I hade seen the 1960’s movie version several times and despite knowing what would happen, you kept me in suspense. What a great narration. You never exaggerated or turned Jackson’s writing into some exaggerated screeching piece of melodrama. It was like hearing a copy of a regular novel, but your voice managed to keep the suspense and that underlying horror in that horrible evil house. Bravo and thanks for several nights of pre-Halloween bumps in the night!
My all time favourite modern ghost story. Adore the book, love the 1963 film. Liked the television version of the interesting adaptation of it. Nothing like the original but a very interesting take on it. The original book is a masterpiece. The ‘63 film is a great adaptation. That’s all one needs to know. ( If your interested - try the film, well worth the time.)
Half way through now. Excellent style of narrating and will certainly check out some more stories here when I'm done. Edit: Listening to this now for the second time, it is quite sad and beautiful
Great.... Better than great.... Narration. I have heard this read by others... But you have managed, in my very humble opinion, to remain true to the author's intent ...and not go all Hollywood! It is my favorite version.
This has to be my all-time favorite frightening story. No ghouls no dripping blood. Just a psychological thriller of epic proportions. And whoever walks there, walks alone ......
A truly masterful rendition of this novel.. thank you so much Tony. My only complaint is that you didn’t give us your take on it at the end. I love your chat .

That opening paragraph is a literary homerun! What an amazing piece of writing. Thanks for the great reading 😄
Thank you, Tony. Best narration I’ve ever heard! It kept me up late many a night. I was sad that it had to end. ❤
I am going to do more Shirley Jackson in the new Year
@@ClassicGhost Yay! 😃❤️
I will be listening to the final chapter tonight. You are the bomb, Tony.
6:01:34 from chap. 8-3 "...and she was held tight (and safe. It is not cold at all, she thought, it is not cold at all. She closed her eyes and leaned back) against the bank and thought, Don't let me go..."
Still one of my favorite books and movies. Thanks for this excellent rendition.
you’re welcome
You have been an excellent companion on a long road trip. Thank you.
This is a wonderful recording. Thank you for narrating it ❤

Thanks for listening
I listened to this last night/this morning. Excellent Tony 👏 thank you yet again. 👍
Thanks for listening
‘TIS that time of the year again. This is a yearly listen for me. Thank you SOOO much for such a wonderful performance
Thank you!
Subscribed after five minutes...watched the original movie as a youngster. Rediscovered the movie on dvd, and it still chills to this day.
Saw the original movie when I was 13 and it scared me to death. I loved it.
reading for my English class and love having an audio playing as I follow along. THANK YOU!
You're very welcome!
Wonderful reading . The black and white movie was a horror staple in my childhood . It was actually my measure of fear. Really enjoyed this !
By far the best performance of this I've ever heard. Thank you!
i am very flattered. thank you
Thank you so much for your wonderful.reading, it's been a great escape during a very rough week. Much appreciated!
I'm loving this story! The narration is absolutely lovely, but it does make me feel so cozy and sleepy... Not a bad thing at all!
I just cannot express how great you are. I think I almost know it by heart. I listen to it every day multiple times during the day. I can't thank you enough for this wonderful, wonderful reading of this great book. ❤
We should both thank Shirley jackson:)
I absolutely love how the reader tells this story!!! The personalities of the characters are so distinct, I forget I'm listening to only one masterful reader. Thank you! ❤️ Favorited this so I can return & listen to again & again! ☺️
I've just told my mum to get listening to this! Beautifully read and absolutely fantastic book!?
Thank you so much for taking this on! Fabulous!
i love you i love you this book is amazing and you read it in such exquisite emotion, which made it quite easy for the listeners and readers it understand and better engage in the book. i am someone who does not particularly find interest in a willingness to read voluntarily, so when i was assigned to read this book i immediately came here and it saved me so much time. your emotion to the characters, which you can very clearly distinct the voice of each character when speaking, made it so much easier to understand which also made it easier for me to follow along. your emotion and tone made the story feel alive, immersive, in a way other readers dont, often times other readers sounding emotionless and monotone, which can very easily disinterest readers and not feel the story envelop their surroundings. i can not get over how much you helped me, this book was truly one i would not have put down if it werent for my other assignments i had to finish. the slow descent into madness, the insanity that slowly started to develop, the way elenore died without a happy ending, especially without a family who loved her, all she wanted was family and she died without one, engulfed in her own overwhelming solitude. it was truly heartbreaking, and i couldnt help but let out raw emotions peaking the end of the story. your voice was firm yet calming, riling with emotion, and i cant thank you enough for letting me experience such an amazing story in the right way, with feeling.
Cor what a lovely lovely comment ❤️ Thank you so much ☺️
Thank you, I needed this right now, to calm my body and mind, and float away in a daydream…your voice soothing and imaginative at the same time…truly brilliant….cannot wait for another audio book, read by you….❤
This is literally a true ghost story that I've ever seen, it's very good. Thank you for giving me a new feeling.
I am pleased to have done so
I hade seen the 1960’s movie version several times and despite knowing what would happen, you kept me in suspense.
I haven't been able to stop listening to this, this reading is fabulous
I was hoping you would post the entire book at once! Thank you so much!
Very welcome
Fabulous, so well read, and what a great story, thank you very much!
And THANK YOU for removing the ads!
Glad you enjoyed it!
This was wonderful. Thank you so much for your work. I adore this podcast and channel.
You are so welcome!
These movie series were my favourite !!!! Can’t wait to read & follow along
I love your style of reading, it fits this book so well.
Half way through now. Excellent style of narrating and will certainly check out some more stories here when I'm done. Edit: Listening to this now for the second time, it is quite sad and beautiful
My favourite haunted house story and you have done it justice!!🎉
Great.... Better than great.... Narration. I have heard this read by others... But you have managed, in my very humble opinion, to remain true to the author's intent ...and not go all Hollywood! It is my favorite version.
Thank you Susan. That’s lovely to hear
Great story and great job!
Excellent!
This has to be my all-time favorite frightening story. No ghouls no dripping blood. Just a psychological thriller of epic proportions.
And whoever walks there, walks alone ......
Abaolutely incredible work, thank you!!
Thank you too!
I've been waiting for this story for a long time. Thank you so much for sharing!
A truly masterful rendition of this novel.. thank you so much Tony. My only complaint is that you didn’t give us your take on it at the end. I love your chat .
I've never done that on the longer ones. I'm tired out from recording them, I guess :)
@@ClassicGhost Fair enough.. tbh I DID think that it must have been exhausting narrating it with such emotion. Still… WHAT was going on with Eleanor???? … in your opinion, of course, lol! Keep up the great work 👍🏻👏🏼👏🏼
this is the best narration of the book. thank you!
😲 The whole book!!! In one go!?
YAY!
Now, I've recorded it all, why not? Glad people are enjoying it
I love the voice quality you brought to the characters, especially Doctor Montague. Your rendition of him reminded me a bit of Christoph Waltz.
Thank you! At last someone understand me :)
@ClassicGhost I'm surprised no one else noticed. You did an impressive job.
Most people mock my accent for the doctor :(
@ClassicGhost No! Shame on them. I hope you do more accents in the future. How else do you find the right voice for characters?
Thank you so much for reading this story. Made my adhd brain focus fully and immerse myself into the story!! Great voice, absolute fantastic reader. Overall this channel rocks
you are a wonderful person
Wonderful story, wonderfully read!
Also, thank you for writing the Themes in the description, because it gives what we are ready to read about without messing about. Great reading, and thank you so much for removing the ads. Great video and I'll stick around your channel for a while for future books!
One thing to improve on, I would love to see the chapters either in the description tags or on the video... that would be cool for when I return tomorrow to hear the next part. ;) Thanks again.
+@AaroneStefano are they not for this one ? i thought id done them. i do for the new long works e.g Frankenstein
thank you so much for this! 🎉😇 i always need something to listen to at night (i get very bad insomnia + so not only do stories like this help me sleep, but it also feels less bad if i DON’T sleep, as at least i’ve made progress with a book!). and your reading is very lovely, perhaps even one of the best! steady and calming, but not monotonous or dull ☺️☺️ thank you so much for your work xxx
i hope i can help you sleep. there’s nothing worse
