Bob Griese said it best when asked to describe what made the 70's SB teams so special...he said, Our team was loaded with smart, talented players who played with a reckless abandon for their bodies.
I had the good fortune to go to many of those games in the old Orange Bowl, now Marlins Stadium. We just lost Jake Scott, so sad. RIP, Jake, you were the best!
Jake Scott should be added to the HOF. 5x ALL-PRO, 5x Pro Bowler, 2x Super Bowl Champion, 3x AFC Champion, Super Bowl MVP, 49 INTs in just 9 NFL seasons (mostly 14 game seasons). He once led the NFL in Punt Return Yardage for a season and Punt Returns for a TD in a season. In his 9 seasons including playoffs, he tallied 90 - YES 90 - total interceptions and fumble recoveries. Scott had more than 2000 return yards in his career.
Luke I couldn't agree more He was one heck of a player. I dont understand why his efforts go unnoticed? I also think Dick Anderson deserves to be in there. Dick Anderson was pretty dagone tough as well and he constantly came up with big plays. The Monday night game against Pittsburgh, the Int TD return in the 71 playoffs against the Colts. Just the fact that they both were a part of 3 Straight Super Bowl appearances should mean something. These people that choose all these modern day players don't realize that these two played on almost every down. They had to be able to play the run as well which reminds me of another memorable Dick Anderson play, I remember the fumble he caused against the Radiers in the 73 playoffs when he put a hit on there running back trying to go over the top on 4th and one. Huge play, yes Both of those guys should be in.
Luke, great point I don't get it. Jake was as good a safety as anyone in the league. He should be in he's definitely being overlooked. I think Dick Anderson should be in too.
best free safety of his era.... heres the problem: he was a true renegade. think the character, cool hand luke & you've got scott nailed down in re to his legend & relationship w/ the authority of the league. & that included shula who he had such a bitter parting w/ it took 25 years to mend it. He kissed no ones @ss, burned several bridges w/ coaches in both pro & college & was never big on reunions. He doesnt have a lot of friends w/ the press & players association. but anyone being honest knows how great he was. He and anderson are the best safety tandem ever. He was as smart as he was athletic & was nail hard tough too. & loved by the guys he played w/. If there is justice, he will get in the hall. true old schoolers will tell you the real #13 in dolphin legend was scott.
@@curtismcneil8695 the no name thing ended up hurting them. it became a self fullfilling prophecy. the media bought into it too much & they are voters too for the hall. dick anderson & scott are definite hall material. best of their era. scott is the best free safety ive ever seen play. curtis johnson & foley were also very solid. & mumphord was overlooked also.
Agree 100%, Jake is still my fave all time Dolphin. He saved our perfect season when Terry Bradshaw had up a head of steam and was running towards the end zone in the '72 AFC championship that would have given them the lead. Jake hit him at about the 5 yard line and stopped him dead in his tracks and gave him a concussion that kept him out of the game for about one quarter...and Bradshaw was a load, probably 220 lbs whereas Jake was probably 190 at the most. He still leads the Dolphins in career interceptions.
A vicious defense that was as opportunistic as any that’s ever been. I witnessed them first hand and the noise of the pads when they hit was thunderous!
I was really young listening to my dad about the dolphins so i was inspired to watch not having a clue how football was played. By 1972 season came around i was tuned on it every Sunday watching the dolphins win every game. I love the brute action of #39 Larry Csonka and saw them win S.B #7 the" perfect season". In 1985 Chicago Bears' season was broken by Marino and company which i remember and dolphins allowed Walter Peyton to get his rushing record. ( R.I.P.) which dolphins' record stands today . awesome history and im glad to live it
I was old enough to see and understand the 73 season when dolphins went to the S.B. . I've been enthuse watching the dolphins play especially Csonka plow through the defense and abuse them for fun. Haha
They were a special group of players that bought into Don Shula's and let's not forget Bill Arnsparger system. They just played as a team. I personally think Jake Scott and Dick Anderson should be in. Vern Den Herder was a real steady player who continued to play for a lot of years. Manny Fernandez was really good but maybe just didn't have enough years played overall to get in. Hall of Fame or not any true Dolphins fan will tell you, that we wouldn't have traded any one of those guys for anybody. Together they were special and are still being talked about. Most important thing is We know there NAMES.
The killer b's of the early 80s had a few all pros - but, they were basically no names. I remember in 1982 the D-fence basically averaged forcing 3 turnovers a game.
The original #13, Jake Scott, free Safety was hardly unheralded...he would have been a 1st rd pick out of Georgia had he not left a year early and went to the Canadian Football league....it was to the credit of the Dolphins player personnel man (I can't remember his name) who built that team that he got him for almost nothing....make no mistake, the Dolphins D was loaded with talent.
Joe Thomas. Late 60s head of player personnel. The 68 draft was for one team maybe the best in history. He also picked up players who were rejected by other teams (Larry Little by SD. They actually cut him!) Made the trade for Warfield. They gave up a first rounder but totally worth it. Warfield maybe the most underrated receiver ever. And when Shula came in he had the perfect team to instill the work ethic needed to become as great as they were.
So many things have changed, which are easily observed in this video. (1) Great defenses are now a thing of the past in football..Seattle was the last we will ever see because of rules changes. (2) 8 white guys, 2 blacks and a Hispanic on defense...never see that again for sure! (3) AstroTurf is also a thing of the past, thankfully!
You're kidding me, on that interception pick six, it was Curtis Johnson that made that play NOT Dick Anderson. Anderson got the credit, but if it wasn't for Johnson's coverage on Eddie Hinton, that would have been a Baltimore touchdown. Anderson was no where near that play, he just received a 'gimme.' Then he had the nerve to talk about the six blocks instead of Johnson's incredible effort.
bodeswell35 Ya think? That's why Shula benched Johnson in the divisional playoffs against Oakland in '74. Johnson and Mumford were NEVER fully appreciated for their talents as cornerbacks on the Dolphins. They were overlooked just like Shula overlooked Morris in '75.
bodeswell35 I know it was the past, but remember both Johnson and Mumford's careers were hamstrung because of coach Shula's bias. Oh yeah, you better believe Shula was a lil' racially biased there especially when it came to black quarterbacks. He did Marlon Briscoe in.
bodeswell35 Wow, it's really great being white and privileged huh? All that wealth flowing into you and your people while African Americans labor and serve y'all with our talents and backs. Then to ease your conscience, you tell yourself 'there ain't no racism, they just do it to themselves,' while your rich bosses decide over, and rule our communities economically and financially. Yeah Shula had many black players alright, especially when they conveniently fit into the black stereotypical mode of 'running and jumping.' Don't ask for no play if you were a leader though. It was all about sitting back and shutting up when you were a Shula soldier. Briscoe was a 'top knotch' quarterback with the Broncos who would have revolutionized the game at QB in the late sixties if he had been given the chance. Coach Don wouldn't even consider Briscoe at the head QB spot. He later went on to 'jerk' Morris in '75 and '76. Morris was 'PISSED.' That's what set him off on his drug abuse problems. He would not have done that to Kiick. Good for 'Merc' though, he is a white 'ass kisser' anyway. He 'one of them dudes' who, no matter what y'all do to him, 'he just 'luv' you white folk anyhow.' The reason why "a mostly all white team" is representative "of a time gone by," is because whites as a race group (including the Irish, Italian, and Jewish immigrants) have been generally economically elevated as a community beginning in the late forties and early fifties. Y'all were given good gov't jobs as well as RACIST control over the skilled union labor, so y'all were no longer too poor and relegated to the playgrounds in the inner cities, WHILE AFRICAN AMERICANS WERE LEFT BEHIND. This resulted in the erosion of general white talent, especially on the professional level, while African Americans became more constant in the urban ghettos and more desperate. This resulted in the beginning of us DOMINATING basketball, football, boxing, and baseball in the sixties, seventies and eighties with our talent waning in the nineties due to the advent of Hip Hop. Larry Bird was the economic 'hold over' and therefore became the exceptional 'great white hope.' Larry remained in those white urban ghetto playgrounds THROUGHOUT THE LATE SIXTIES and trained hard on his craft in Indiana. I'll tell you a secret though: Miami is the REAL "team of the seventies." The four super bowls obtained by the Steelers are what brainwash and fool fans. Miami owned Pittsburgh and would have beaten us as the seventies champion (don't tell anyone I told you that, lol). Miami had better leadership than Pittsburgh who was more brawn than brains (Griese better than Bradshaw, Shula better than Noll). It's too bad though, speed just overcomes everything, INCLUDING REAL SKILL, TALENT, AND BRAINS. The 2000 New York giants really had something special, but when the Baltimore Ravens found out the weakness of Jason Seahorn (simply too slow, although he was an excellent safety), IT WAS ALL OVER. No it's not racist for us to pull for Tiger Woods. In fact, it is more of a revolutionary thing. Tiger would be what you would call 'OUR MOSES' on the golf course. He led us to the promise land of 'ahhhh, blacks can play golf after all.' He made us feel that maybe we can do more than just 'run & jump.' That would be the result of racism as an institution in America, i.e. golf. It is just like 'you 'good ol' boys' to DENY your white racism. That's because you want to look upon yourselves as a religious and good people, BUT YOU ARE NOT. WHITE FOLK ARE RACIST THROUGH AND THROUGH. YOU ALL ARE, WHY??? WEALTH AND POWER. If there were more African Americans ALLOWED in golf, then we would root for whites in golf as well. I rooted for Larry Bird and Jack Nicholas, so did my father. When you are racially 'pigeon holed,' then you root for the lone pigeon. Well, if you REALLY want to see more whites in sports, check out the influx of Europeans in the NBA. 'Marsol and them' won a championship a couple of years ago. The team that beat LeBron James and the Heat. The white athlete in mainstream sports is a victim of his own racist/class society and its restrictive rules on African Americans. Y'all are victims of your own privilege in reverse 'so to speak.' That is why y'all desperately carved out golf and tennis financially for yourselves. If you end the ECONOMIC WHITE RACISM in your precious America, then you can have a chance at more Anglo/Saxon whites playing basketball. How 'bout that? Less AA's will relegate themselves to the playground due to better job, and career opportunities through our own economic empowerment. It will be 'even steven' with the erosion of talent on both sides. Wow, you really don't get it with Caepernick huh? You just simply want to maintain white supremacy huh? The REAL frightening question that you whites do not want to face, and that Colin is TRULY asking is: DOES AMERICA DESERVE TO BE RESPECTED, HONORED, AND SALUTED AS A WHITE NATION FOR STANDING UP FOR ITS IDEALS ON PAPER (THE CONSTITUTION)??? DOES AMERICA TRULY LIVE UP TO ITS IDEALS??? PS: Keep watching, but not just sports...
curtis johnson was very underrated. a great cover corner and a physical hitter who could prevent outside running. one of the reasons the fin safeties got so many int.'s, aside from being great players, was the seal tight coverage that johnson & foley consistently provided.

The only team to be perfect .The best compliment from a die hard Steelers fan.
The more i watch this team, the more i realize how smart these guys were.
A vicious defense that was as opportunistic as any that’s ever been. I witnessed them first hand and the noise of the pads when they hit was thunderous!
The only defense in NFL history to not give up a single point to the other teams offense in the Superbowl
Until the Ravens in superbowl 35.
Curtis Johnson's afro was tight back in the day

Manny Fernandez should be in the Hall of Fame.
The No Names were the best. They beat my Skins 14-7 in SB VII. Manny Fernandez should've been the MVP, he lived in our backfield.
Bruce Proctor Jake "shared' mvp with manny.

Ansparger as a Defensive Genius ~ when he left to go to LSU .....Shula & Dolphins Defense was never the same.
They never won a Super Bowl without him .
That defense had eleven stars and their 1970 - 1974 record proved it. 57 - 12 - 1
No-Name Defense is legendary.
Had the pleasure of seeing this defense the entire time it existed
Me too
From a life ling 305er Thank you so much for posting this.
Manny Fernandez was solid . Obviously Nick B was incredible may he RIP.
Brian Flores is bringing back the No Name defense and by 2021 we’ll probably be the best defense in the National Football league.
........ if only
our defense is amazing but we've lost flores, we'll see what happens tho
Hall of Famer Nick Buoniconti
The only one on defense
Ian Ward May he Rest In Peace
Rest in Peace #85
Rip
Loved 70s football
Individually there weren’t any names but together they were the “No Names”
Not the most talented, nor the most physical, but the smartest defense.I enjoyed every single moment of that team.
R.i.p Nick 🙏🏾
The killer b's of the early 80s had a few all pros - but, they were basically no names. I remember in 1982 the D-fence basically averaged forcing 3 turnovers a game.
R.I.P. DON SHULA
Bill Matheson started the tradition of the edge-rushing LB. Ten years later Lawrence Taylor perfected it.
IF they didnt lose Bill Arnsbarger and some players the WFL they would have won at least one more Superbowl
I agree
Two UGA guys on that defense. Bill Stanfill and Jack Scott.
When football was football.
So long Jake, you were a stud among men.
this video is awesome

Defense 🏈🏈🏈
Imagine quarterbacks today try to play with the old rules they wouldn't last one game.
They were bas ass ! One of the best ever ! Lowest points in 14 game year
Just before my time. Wish I remembered it. 0:58

Nine white guys. Tim Foley was the starter at the other corner. Lloyd Mumford was the back-up.
Funny how there's less white men on defenses now and defensive play is the worst it's ever been
RIP NAB
If Arnsparger hadn't left to LSU, how many more SBs could they have won?
Maybe SB 19 and 20 .
The Dolphins won a lot of close games that year
You had to have receivers, tight ends, and running backs could turn inside, outside, and catch to beat this defense.
Back when they were allowed to tackle the quarterback.

What were the GM’s and offensive coordinator thinking? You has to speed in the QB position but they wanted that stand still guy.
Awesome, and half those plays would be a penalty now
You should watch the five part AFL documentary. Those defensive plays were scary!
The game has turned in to soft hitting football you can’t touch the qb it’s a joke
🇺🇸👍🏼
Again, it stinks now, but that was a great time to be an NFL fan
Miami was a much better team the year following their perfect season. They played a bunch of crap teams all through their perfect season,
I call bs on the only thirteen mental mistakes on defense all season. What do you call off sides, late hits, a blown coverage?
Imagine that defense playing now 😂😂 They'd just get their asses handed to them.
