    I know this will sound ridiculous, but I always thought it would be great to reside in a place like Smuggler’s Cove.
    I mean, it’s peaceful and serene, and it has a history of pirates. If you wanted to travel, you could go by train! It just looks like the perfect peaceful place to go when on holiday or in retirement.

      Same! Pre-covid, I used to visit family up in Camden, Maine. Not too many pirates up there, but it's a lot like Smuggler's Cove. Very peaceful & pretty seaside town. Always wish I could live there. This game reminds me of Camden so much.

    What I love so much about all of Walter Wick’s work- books and games alike- is that he manages to perfectly capture a sense of childlike wonder with just a single photo, and he does this with every single picture he takes. That city made of wooden blocks and toy cars brought to life? Done. An adventurous mood as you search for pirates’ treasure? Done. The spookiness of wandering through a haunted manor? Done. That city of the future? Done. Those fairy tales you always read? Done. I feel like there is a huge societal pressure to get over our childhood senses of wonder, imagination, and curiosity, and I really wish more people would hold on to it. Obviously, we’ve got to live it the real world most of the time, but to be able to occasionally stop and pretend to be a pirate, a knight, or any other kind of fantasy is so important. That’s why I really admire Walter Wick, and why I still regularly come back to his work; he is clearly a man who still remembers these childlike wonders, and will never fully let go of them, and I think that’s an amazing thing. So, on behalf of all the I Spy and Can You See What I See fans out there, thank you, Walter Wick, for all the amazement you’ve given us.

    • @Icicle_158
      @Icicle_158  3 года назад +20

      Seconded. What makes Wick such an integral component to the games is his devotion to his craft. The locations in their own right are dizzying enough: a classroom chalkboard, a model city, a New England hamlet, an abandoned mansion, a reef, a castle made of sand, a carnival, even the surface of an alien planet.
      What further elevates this panoramic portfolio is Wick’s meticulous construction of each set, especially the minutiae that makes it more than a mere level. No matter where you are in the series, every frame alludes to the presence of occupation. Treasure Hunt is the quintessential example of this motif, from the clubhouse in the shed to the businesses in town and ruins scattered throughout. No matter where you go, the sense of small-town familiarity can be found throughout the game.
      Perhaps that is what Wick intended to highlight in each of his photos - the kind of memory that never loses its original impact as the years trundle forward. In other words, a kind of nostalgia tempered with the professionalism of age. It is one of the key reasons why this series was able to form such a legacy in the minds of those who played it growing up, a piece of childhood media that deserves the luxury of archiving.
      Such an accomplishment is due in large part to not only Walter Wick’s photos, but also Jean Marzollo’s riddles and the digital contributions of Black Hammer Productions, Gusto Games, and Artech Studios. Their passion and labor has shown what it takes for a game to transcend generations and maintain what made it fascinating for its original fans, especially as they make the leap from childhood to adulthood.

    These I Spy PC games are some of the best games for children, they need to be brought back in their full glory. They look exactly like the books, and incentivize exploration, memory, and discovery, whereas most 'educational' children's games are just school simulators, this one is pure critical thinking and perception. More children of today need to play these games, they're far too valuable to let vanish into the past.

      I would say that you would be better off buying a physical copy of the game from an online marketplace, like eBay or Amazon. Of course, having a compatible computer is another key aspect.

      @@Icicle_158 Will probably do that. I wish I hadn’t lost my copy.
