    Heath, I appreciate that you brought up Austin’s admiration of the films. He doesn’t hold back from making appropriate remarks about how ridiculous certain aspects of a film or their productions can be, but he is not looking to bash or be snarky. It’s a fantastic book and I can’t wait for the next volume.

    You just gotta love Cannon movies, even if it's just for the idiosyncracy of 'em as a film company,
    and their movie output was tonally all over the place,
    like you'll get thoughtful heartfelt movies like *Barfly* right next to *Delta Force* with no buffer inbetween! 💖 💖 💖

    Way to go Heath! Another great interview. I LOVE Cannon Films! Remember when I just told you I wasn't interested in book collecting? Will scrap that.This book looks absolutely AMAZING and I definitely plan on purchasing it in the near future. LMAO when you mentioned the little room in the back with the curtain. Brought back a memory of my then 6 year old son, whom I always let pick out his own movie from the kids section, wandered in there while I was distracted reading the back of a video box. When I realized what happened I ran in there to retrieve him . He was just standing there all wide eyed starring at the box covers. When we got home I had to have one of those father to son talks I wasn't planning to have for a few more years.

    Oh wow my heart is in this conversation. I have to get this book. One of the personal highlights of my filmmaking career was when one of my films played a film festival alongside The Interplanetary Surplus Male and Amazon Women of Outer Space. I was able to sit and chat with Sam Firstenberg about filmmaking and I nerdy gushed about what an impact Revenge of the Ninja had on me growing up. All ninja movies are compared to Revenge of the Ninja for me. For me now, I believe this was my first real super hero film. He signed my DVD of RotN too. He was a super nice person and that conversation with him continues to impact me today.

      That's a great story. Thanks for sharing it! Firstenberg really does seem to be the real deal and a great guy.

    In the UK, in the 80’s we actually had a chain of Cinemas run by Cannon, they often showed Cannon movies as well as films from Charles Band’s Empire studio’s, amongst other movies. The one where I lived closed down years ago and became a Casino.

    • @FunkSoulBrotherUK

      Yep first cinema experience was in my local Cannon cinema. They bought the ABC cinema chain and changed them to Cannon cinemas in the UK.

      Remember them showing Cannon films that had no right being shown in a cinema. Dont remember Charles Band flicks being shown though.

    Another wonderful interview with an accomplished author, who comes off as a great guy. Heath, you are on a roll! Have you thought of talking to Daniel Griffith of Ballyhoo Films or someone at Kino Lorber? I think anyone who watches your channel regularly would enjoy The Cannon Film Guide. I need to follow up with Austin to get a bookplate!

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  4 года назад

      Thanks for the kind words!
      I would love to talk to Daniel Griffith, and I’m waiting for just the right time to reach out and ask for an interview. I love his work, and he’s been kind to me in the past.
      Kino Lorber, on the other hand, has not. They continue to refuse to acknowledge my existence, and haven’t responded to my MANY email attempts or copious social media praise of them. Their reputation is growing as a company that seems to not want or appreciate publicity, so I’ll save my coverage for those who recognize the value of their fans.

    Funny I just saw this video now and missed it when it was fresh, because over the last couple months I have just been absorbing "80's action B movies" such as American Ninja, Avenging Force, and The Delta Force. It took a few movies in before I realized they just all happened to be made under the same "Cannon Films" studio, then realizomg I must be a fan of all their stuff and want to just absorb ALL of their movies now.

    This is a project that I myself might have attempted were I more of an authorial bent. It's no surprise to me that Mr. Trunick is in no way arch about his subject. One can hardly undertake a three-volume series, on one's own initiative, without a considerable respect and affinity for the material under analysis.
    I think it was Pauline Kael who said, "Movies are so seldom great art that we should not go unless we can appreciate great trash." And the Cannon films, I feel certain Mr. Trunick will agree, are some of the very greatest. I envy him his opportunity and eagerly anticipate the completed set. 😎

    • @goldenager59
      @goldenager59 3 года назад

      P.S. "Trash" I personally hold to be a despicable phrase when applied to people or their endeavors.
      "Juvenile", on the other hand, may be almost as scornful but in my opinion has more of an undertone of fondness to it. (Some of us are more embarrassed about it than others, but haven't we all, at some point and to some extent, been juvenile - in more ways than one?) 😏 🤪
