Okay! Hexagram! The opening track off the self titled album “Deftones.” According to the band recorded in their “dark era?” Multiple members had stated they were going through some tough times and like most musicians poured that into the making of this release. Loving your perspective on these videos and yes....you are one of us! 😂
That's part of what makes Deftones so awesome. The lyrics are pretty much open to interpretations. I always tell people they're such a good band and their music is so enjoyable. The last time I saw them live they killed it. It was incredible.
I read somewhere that this song compares the feeling of being a music performer in big shows with the feeling of being a suicidal car driver pushed by the people wanting to see what happens, thus the "worship/play" is like he asking the crowd to worship him and the crowd asking him to play just like "animals" giving each other what they want, even though he felt at that point that performing this intense shows was kinda killing him
Great video man! I think you’ve basically figured this out, but it’s worth saying - there are no wrong interpretations! There may be a meaning he had in mind, but Chino (the singer) generally writes lyrics in a more abstract, painterly way, to create moods and images for the listener to interpret how they want. I’ve seen reactors get too bogged down in trying to figure out the literal narrative sometimes, it’s more about how they make you feel. I think you’ve come up with some really thoughtful takes on their songs. Another good catchy, heavier tune is Rocket Skates, or for a Change style song, Minerva is a real beaut.and they both have actual videos!
Passenger probably helped bridge the gap for a lot of people. But it makes sense, both bands have always had a knack for having the right balance of heaviness, atmosphere, and emotion in a way not a lot of groups can pull off.
Hexagram is the sign of David. Which is the symbol of Judaism. The song is about martyrs who blow themselves up believing that it is right in their religions eyes and even their parents eyes. He sympathizes with them saying that it is a sweet gesture to want you please you’re family and god, but he would expect everyone to protect life around the world now. The sound of the camera is the same sound as the car bomb. And the martyr has a faint smile as it goes off
Something to always keep in mind is that Chino writes stories sometimes in some songs (both real or made up) and also likes to leave the meaning up to the listener in most cases. Not always as some can be more straightforward but even older stuff wasn't super clear. He got better at it. But you saw the beginning of it already with their first album. The way he wrote wasn't traditional in any way I guess. He doesn't necessarily love that era as he was super young but it is what it is. Overall I love how chaotic this song is and it had to grow on me for sure. Hands down my favorite album from them. May tie with another depending on my mood. Adrenaline is still fucking raw and amazing to me.
Great reaction. Been a fan since '98 . They don't have a bad album and they are in their own genre, try some Fireal and you'll see how bad ass they are on their first album. Adrenaline
Chino freestyles shit live a lot. It can be disappointing if you go thinking they'll sound exactly like the album. For the most part they do, sometimes even better but he does sing sometimes whatever is more comfortable for his voice in the moment. So the worship, play thing isn't replicated always to be exact like on the album.

Love the guy with the Tool shirt at 3:47. Coincidence that Tool fans are also Deftones fans? I think not.

Korea is deffinetly an underrated banger (they have a song called Korea, on their 2000 release "White Pony")

I think the lyrics are kind of a light commentary on the Israel/Palestine conflict, and the name "Hexagram" is sort of the clue-in.
Absolutely
