i used to ride a very short board (just at the chin). it was manageable as long as it was thick in the middle, with some width in the tail (this was a used, yellowing board). got my deepest barrel ever. everyone should experiment with board length. you would be amazed at the limitations. floatation is key.
Rule of thumb is to go 2-6" above your height so that fact that he is using a board his exact height makes it like a loose skateboard on the water, I am 5'8 and ride a 5'8. Feels better and more maneuverable
go small boards! I own a 5'4 and she's awesome hahah, the movement and freedom it ies me is amazing, but if it get too big I oculd have some trouble, specially since I dont surf like kelly hahah
its all dependent upon the waves, everyone is riding 6'0s and beyond. a regular 5'5 board would not have enough rocker or the rails you would typically want for this wave.
u guys think that board is tiny. no that incorrect. last summer i rode a 4'5 board. my friend snaped of the nose of a 5'4 board so he sawed it from the break into a regularly shaped board and started riding it again. most fun board i have ever riden. keep in mind that im only 4'10
Yep, they forgot to mention Kelly lost the heat on the big day cause he couldn't get a back up score. Problem was he was trying to paddle the 5.9.. potato chip in 8 foot waves and it was like a little toy boat, add to that Billy Stairmand ripped the fuck out of it.
Every year it goes big and onshore and they still choose to surf main break shit 20 mins drive it's offshore and pumpin Kelly doesn't take margs seriously he just likes the golf and local winers
i have a 5,4 aloha magic mushroom that i ride in 5 foot barrels all the time but i am only 45 kgs the board is 19 and a 1/2 wide and 2 and 3/4 thick and it does just fine

really, I'm 6'4", and a 6'4" board is a plank for me,… 6'1" to 6'1.5" is prime for me for general surf.

I ride a 5'7" in waves similar to this. Could go shorter if I had one. Its all about volume.
Its beause the type of surf it is why they say the board is tiny.. coz usually they would use 6'1 - 6'3's on this sort of surf.
