I found a guitar in a dumpster that a construction crew was using in Manhattan one time. The foreman told me a resident asked if he could throw some trash in it, and this old Dean flying Vx was thrown out. I took it home and everything worked fine. As a matter of fact it worked so well that the only thing I did was change the strings and installed new pickups and it's still one of my favorite guitars to this day.

Dave, this Bin-o-Face is a 1964 Teisco Del Rey VN-2 Baritone Made in Japan only for 1 Year electric guitar. I saw one in good used condition on Reverb Sold at $599. Lots of words spoken about the pickups being used by various major players. Surprise…seems you got a Japanese wonder. And yes it was Sunburst.

A quick searchy revealed that Guyatone and Lindell also sold this model, they were probably all made in the same factory and just OEM branded for whoever was selling them

    • @ZephyrRheinbrohl
      @ZephyrRheinbrohl 4 месяца назад +4

FUN FACT: It is sold as Lindell VN-2 in Europe (Del Ray was brand name only for USA) and, even if it is pure-blooded Teisco, it was made by Fujigen Gakki as subcontractor of Teisco. Really, really rare under all brand names she was sold. Great catch, even better than my 1976 Luxor SG made by Kasuga Gakki, also found in trash :)

I think it is a Guyatone looking at the used tremelo i have a trem like that from a badly mistreated guyatone Broadway that was beyond rescuing, like on Dave's the cover is gone, Teisco used another model, the problem with these guitars is that when the nameplate is gone everybody is going for Teisco because they are more valuable, even later Kawai's can be found named teisco.

    • @ZephyrRheinbrohl
      @ZephyrRheinbrohl 4 месяца назад

@@wietseterpstra8295 Sure that you can find Kawai named Teisco, because Kawai bought "Teisco" brand in late 1967. Used it for export guitars till late 1969, and for domestic, japanese, market till 1977.

My dad once made an acoustic guitar in 1952 to relieve the boredom of being a lighthouse keeper. I found it in an attic in a very bad state of repair. I took it to a friend who renovated it. I will be going to collect it sometime this year. It's never played rock and roll but it's going to.

I love your road trips, Dave, especially the ones near to home when you're driving around Lincolnshire. I was brought up in the Fens and so I really appreciate these flat land/huge sky environments. I always thought that it was a brilliant idea of Pete Townshend to name The Who's first live album "Live at Leeds", instead of "Live at (some swanky venue in London)". I wish you all the success in the world with Red Giant and if you ever get to the point of releasing a live album, I'd love you to release, "Live in Grimsby", or "Live in Scunthorpe/Skegness". 🙂

    Great and entertaining video, Dave.
    Thank you for that, sir.
A fellow I knew, Mikey, was a janitor at the local Army airfield.
He had found a beat-up, broken Epiphone Les Paul in a dumpster a few years ago.
He brought it to me directly, hoping I could make it work.
I glued, clamped, and set the neck (the neck had separated from the rosewood fingerboard for some reason.)
Cleaned out all the electronics with DeOxit.
I purchased a new tailpiece and tune-o-matic bridge, as the old ones were missing.
Polished it, restrung it, and did a nice set-up.
The guitar was lovely, and worked just fine!
Mikey and his wife were unbelievably happy with the guitar, naturally.
    I didn't charge them a dime.
Sadly, Mikey passed away from a heart attack a year later, at age 40.
At the memorial service, his wife let me know that their young son was taking over the guitar, and intended to keep it forever, in memory of his father.

I bought it brand new in our local musicstore, who sold them as "Hawaii guitars" After a bit of polishing it still looks close to brand new. Used some glue a friend uses to build airplane models. A little bit on with some spray stuff, hand held and it's still together years later. A paid a guy $50 to get it playing. Sounds and plays amazingly. Only thing it doesn't have correct knobs. Should be gold top over cream. 2 each volume and tone. I have all black. Felt good to save a nice old relic.

Just think, It has sat idly by in dark and dusty corner's of someone's house, garage, loft etc as the rest of the world continued to evolve around it. Spiritually speaking, That guitar has a little bit of someone's soul and passion in it, because it was saved from a journey to the compost heap. Hi Dave, A few things about that guitar.
That guitar went under a couple different names, but yes the VN-2 as well as a quad pickup model, the VN-4, were made by Teisco. This can be seen in the neck design/headstock shape, and the electronics (which can be found on Teisco models from that same year such as the SS-2L/4L from around the same time (1964 like you had figured out)
You were on the right track with the bracket that holds the pickups being inverted for some reason, however the orientation of the pickups is wrong in that current layout. on each pickup, the two height adjustment screws should be facing towards the neck of the guitar, instead of the bridge. Actually, the bridge pickup is the one that has the metal braided cable, and yes that is the cable that came with the guitar. Why did the use only shielded cable on the bridge pickup, and why did somebody before you decide to mangle it? who knows lol.
One more thing: the bridge vibrato system actually was the original one, but like on many of these guitars from the 60's, alot of players decided to scrap the whole arm. there actually is a housing that is supposed to go over the string retainer/ spring assembly, with a cutout for the arm (another Teisco design that can be seen on their own guitars.)
Anyways, whatever you decide to do with it will put that guitar in a better situation that it started in! Hope the info helps.

Oh, my! The trem tailpiece on that looks like it came from an E-J2. These guitars were sold as St. George, Lindell, Zim-Gar, and Teisco and more, but in 1964 they would have been made at the Teisco plant (they did not sell to Kawai until 1967). I have heard that if you know the different brands well, you can tell them by the truss rod cover shape (for instance, a lot of St John's will look almost exactly like Teiscos, but have the truss rod adjustment by the bridge pickup like some Fenders and Lindells have what is called "the tombstone" cover). Anyhow, I hope this one comes back to life!

Have loved and played the heck out of it for the last decade and a half, dropped it 10000 times, it currently resides as a 5 string after breaking the headstock (low E tuner position snapped off). But mine has the same fingerboard markings, which is why I got it to begin with, love that style that Teisco used. For such cheapies they sure sound good (mine has gold foils). I hope to fix mine up to minty freshness again someday, but for playing garage punk in A, it works just splendidly. Thanks for sharing your cool find!

I owned a Marlin “State Of The Art” bass when I was a teenager - I haven’t heard that name in decades! Looked cool, but sounded awful… sold it to a co-worker ARGH years ago. I still have my first-ever guitar (Marlin SIdewinder) in the loft…

Back int' 60s my mate Nige had a 4 pickup version of one of those.
I THINK it had "Airstream" on the headstock.
It had the strangest muddy greeny brown sunburst finish, much like the headstock on that one.

Me, I'd plug those trem holes an reseat the original.
Even with the chrome cover gone, it'll still look cool.
And I'd get a bar for that whammy ... make one even.
The original bridge looks rescue'able too.

I'm unsure about that neck pickup, are the splices going to hold? is that corrosion going to kill it? would it be worth having it rewound? or could the pickup be protected somehow eg wax potting?

Awesome score ! I had similar luck some years ago, with a '60s Japanese Sakai; all there, all working, all playable, but someone had refinished it to all red, with badly done flames! Have been rescuing and repairing old guitars for decades now, and I love the character of all the wear and bumps and dings (as long as they don't compromise the function of the instrument). Thanks for sharing your discovery. Cheers from rural South Australia !

Great video Dave! I love rescuing and restoring old guitars of any make and one in my collection is a Japanese 'Stagemaster' from the 1960s that I found on a local online internet auction site 'needing some attention'! Not sure how it ended up here in Sweden....Good find, that baritone! :)

They sound cool but are crazy microphonic.

Dave , this is not a Teisco guitar. This is actually an early Fujigen guitar. This was the second ever solid body electric guitar they ever made. They made this from around 1963-65 and they were primarily 3 separate models. The VN 2 , VN 4 and the very rare VN 3 model. The production specs varied throughout the years .
You mentioned putting a Gibson tuna- matic in it , I dont believe it's a good idea since the body is much thinner than a conventional electric guitar.

I'm amazed someone binned it, as even in that state you'd probably easily get £70+ for it on eBay. If you can't find a trem unit to match the original, or just don't want to bother with a trem, a replacement Teisco tailpiece could be picked up pretty cheap, and in my view would look better than that Gibson-style one you showed (it would cover most of the holes from the one that was taken off). I'd stick with the tune-o-matic though as Teisco bridges weren't the best, and you'd at least have a chance of tuning it properly. Looks like the electrics are wired up the right way at least (if not a great job), unlike the two Teiscos I've fixed up.

I picked up a Squier Strat from a guy who said it didn´t work for 40 euro. Had no way to test it at the time. It looked in decent nick but I wanted it for a project guitar. Go it home, plugged in to see if anything would work and... There is nothing wrong with it!! In fact, it is so good, it has replaced my MIM Strat! Yes, I replaced the trem for a Wilkinson fat trem block and a TUSQ nut then a slight setup and thats it 🙂

Deffs gonna have its own unique sound, wether it’s bad or good, I dunno. Most probably sound best through a Marshall set to that plexi chimey clean, with some chorus and reverb, is my guess.
Will be like when you listen to a Beatles song, and you try pick out what guitar is being used, and you come to the conclusion it sounds like no strat, Tele, or a 335. And it’s the rickenbaker being used, to produce that unique distinctive sound. That’s what I think this guitar will do, is leave everyone guessing as what’s producing that sound.

It still needs a paint job, so any recommendations would be much appreciated :)

If the trem was in the correct position, there isn’t enough space for the TOM. Looking at the frets, I would re-radius the fretboard and give it new frets. It will never be a collector’s item, might as well make it intonate cleanly. Those frets don’t even extend over the binding. If you put on a modern bridge, the e and E string will probably not even land on any fret wire at all. It’s costly, though. Can probably afford the tools to do it yourself over paying someone else.

As far as I remember all those 60's-70's solid body Japan electrics had a sunburst finish
of some color variant. If it can be taken down to original I feel it would be well worth the effort.
