@@TheLinuxYes Selena did NOT know Spanish. She learned Tejano songs phonetically with her father's help. She didn't start Spanish lessons until the early '90's. Eventually she became semi-fluent, but not until toward the end of her life. The ironic thing is that when she finally started singing in English, the public was amazed at how quickly she learned the language, when, in reality, it was her native language!
She was fluent for years before she died. To say "keep in mind that selena isn't a really speak spanish" is false. She wasn't raised in a Spanish speaking house, she learned Spanish while singing and she was very fluent by her late teens.
I just get overwhelmed with emotion when I hear this song and any Karen Carpenter song. They just both had so much to offer. Especially Selena because she was just on the verge of crossing over and becoming even more successful.

Selena’s dreaming of you is another english recording that is still highly played on today’s radio stations. The lyrics are so sad and haunting because it was released after her death.
For about 3 years before her passing, I lived like 2 blocks away from Selena. Saw her several times outside her home. One regret was never meeting her but people that lived around her had stories of her being super nice. RIP REINA! Queen of Tejano
This is not an easy song to sing. She makes all those changes in her range sound so effortless. And while she does have an airiness to her voice, she’s got some real strength in her voice, too. I love this song so much. Always have. Always will. RIP Selena.
I met her at the Acapulco Hotel Elcano Festival by pure chance, I was impressed with her dancing and how beautiful she was. As soon as she finished singing on the shore, she signed autographs, took photos with people, always very accessible and friendly, the audience was the first thing for her and she was willing to serve them. We hug. A great woman, beautiful inside and out.
My stepdad works in film & video and I remember he’d gotten back from a shoot for this (unknown to him at the time) artist. He asked if my sister & I had heard of this Selena and I had but wasn’t familiar with her music. He was very impressed with her as a person and seemed very sure that she was about to break through. There was that vibe if you’ve ever been around that. Anyway, it wasn’t but maybe a few weeks later that she was killed. Of course she really got big after her death. So sad. I could tell from what he said, she wasn’t acting like a diva on the set. Just really cool, really nice to the crew and everyone. Just another part of her legacy. RIP!

One of Selena’s inspirations is Mariah Carey! So glad you guys recognized that about her voice! A lot of people don’t know that but at her museum in Corpus there’s a huge article on the wall that she states who her inspirations were and Mariah was the first one mentioned!
Real recognize real! 💯 I remember on an interview selena mentioned that too of mariah. Im a big mariah fan! To have selena and mariah in the same sentence speaks volumes
I don't speak Spanish, but my favorite Selena song is "Como La Flor". I was intrigued by her emotion and the emotion of the audience while watching the performance, and I HAD to know what she was saying. The lyrics are so moving. It helped to have the lyrics (I know a little Spanish) and translation while listening to truly understand and appreciate the song. Simply Beautiful!
Selena was an up and rising star headed for the universal stars. Her life was cut way too short, tragically. I can’t imagine that had she lived today she had been up there with Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson. Rest in peace Selena.
She was going to be bigger than she already was. This was from her English language album and it was a big song when it came out. I loved her voice and this song is incredible. One of my favorites 😍

Selena was a beautiful soul that completely changed the world of Tejano music. This single came out not long after this album came out. She was murdered before she could film a regular music video for it. She truly did captivate the world with her charisma 🥰
Thank you for reacting to Selena. She is such an incredible talent and is never forgotten, especially with the Latin community. "Dreaming Of You" was the other English crossover song of hers to check out. I'd also suggest a couple of her Spanish ones, "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom" and "Baila Esta Cumbia". This is a perfect song. Sung by an exceptional artist! So sad she is not with us! I remember the evening it was announced she passed, we were in the car and all the radio stations were playing this song.
I had never heard of her until her death in 1995. I was the same age as her. I bought her CD, because I loved the two songs she did in English. This is one of them. I still have the CD. You also have to hear "Dreaming Of You."
I think of my mother when I hear Selena she was a big fan. Selena was a bright shining star that was taken away from us way too soon.😢 “Dreaming of you” is another good one
Amor Prohibido is a favorite. This song and Dreamin' were on HEAVY rotation when she died. Sad ending to a rising star, but her passing gave Jennifer Lopez her opportunity and the rest is history Quick update: If you are looking to explore other artists in other languages, I recommend Lara Fabien. I Will Love Again was my introduction, but when I heard Je Suis Malade, I got chills. I don't speak a lick of French. She has a hefty roster of songs and her voice is amazing. Adagio, Immortelle, Broken Vow, Part of Me...
She had such a great voice you can hear she has it in the low range all the way up to falsetto her voice is so weighty. I get what you guys say airy too yet very grounded and full.
"No me queda mas", is another of her greatest songs." Tu sol tu" and "que creias". She sang a lot of dance music like "baile esta cumbia" she was awesome!!
I remember the ads for the movie about her, but I've never seen it. The video montage here is so very touching, and clearly a loving tribute to a beautiful, extraordinary young woman. I'll have to add this album to my wish list. Thanks for the reaction.
I watched the Selena movie dozens of times (starring Jennifer Lopez who was phenomenal!) and I adored Selena the singer and person. RIP in peace always, sweet Selena.
I am so glad you chose Selena for your Female Friday. Great song choice too. She is so underplayed. Don't let her Spanish songs deter you from listening. Most of them have English captions so you know what's being said. Another superb music artist who left this world way to soon.
I met her briefly before she was taken away from us. She was so nice and BEAUTIFUL in person. My brother took me to see her and I was in Awe. Sadly both her and my wonderful brother are gone but never forgotten. Love you Joe and Selena
Once you start diving into selena music and performances, it's hard to stop. She was such a superstar and still so humble. There's a lot of great music she gave us. There are fun dance songs like la carcacha, baila esta Cumbia that are very popular. Then fierce songs like que creias, Los desprecios, Las cadenas. I cant watch como la flor without crying. There are a lot of English songs that she has too, like missing my baby, dreaming of you, captive heart, a boy like that. But its fun to watch live performances, she was and is very captivating ♡ love the reaction. This song for me is so ethereal and her voice sounds perfect on it.
Yes!! Please do more Selena!! Since you’ve done two English songs so far you have got to check out her original Spanish songs. Which is the majority of her repertoire. Her live performances were legendary and never forgotten. She was such an incredible dancer with tons of charisma and just plain love for what she did. In her short life she accomplished so much and won over the public anywhere she went. Please keep on her journey you won’t regret it. Not to mention that to Mexican Americans she was and will always continue to be a beacon for what can be if you’re yourself and give love to what you do. Definitely in line with y’all’s message, much love and keep ‘em coming 💕.
I literally can't think of any other female artist who LITERALLY had it all like Selena...voice, looks, body, dancing, storytelling ability, personality and on and on...
It’s a given to say that Selena’s voice was beautiful and elegant. But the compositions behind her voice were next level, and they take you to places unexpected and rarely felt.
I absolutely LOVE it when people listen to Selena for the first time, this is what will always keep her legacy alive. No matter how many years go by, her impact on the world will not go away. So with that being said, thank you both for checking out her music. I would like to request Bidi Bidi Bom Bom and Dreaming of You, aside from this song, those are two of her most popular songs.
To think she died at 23 years old. What a tragedy. She would have been a big, BIG star! She was so beautiful and she her voice was flawless. Her story was made into a movie starring Jennifer Lopes. It showed her personality. It's a very poinient movie. Love her. Great choice Amber. P.s. Love those braids girl!! ❤️
Thank you for reacting to Selena. I am one of your older fans from Texas. I started following Selena when she was 15 yrs. old and have always been a fan. I only got to see her live once in concert. It rained that sad day, March 31, 1995. The Dreaming of you Album was released posthumously. The family was waiting for her to go by the studio to record another song for it, but she never arrived. She only got to record four English songs plus one song she did with David Byrne of The talking Heads, called God's Child. She sings in Spanish while David Byrne sings in English. She improvised her part completely. It's a work of art, I highly recommend it. The rest of the album was finished with remixed Spanish songs. If you would like to here some Rock and Roll Selena, listen to the song "Ya No!". Her husband Chris Perez, guitarist and composer fell into deep depression after her death, a few years later he went back to music and into the studio and recorded his Grammy winning album Resurrection (The Chris Perez Project), where you can find the song he wrote after Selena's death called Best I Can, which I also highly reccomend.
This isn't in my wheelhouse of music taste but I find this song incredibly emotional and well done. Her voice is amazing, the guitar parts that come in and out is done so tastfully and the bass brings a bit of the funk.
I'm from Texas, and I Remember when her life was ended by a gun at a early age!! I remember Like it was Yesterday it was the 90s and everyone in school was crying 😭😭! Even Me I couldn't believe it!
Just keep in mind all she accomplished, in her short 23 years on this earth. She was violently taken away, on that fateful March 31st, 1995. Selena, will keep on living, in all that beautiful music she left for all of us. R.I.P. Tejana Queen. 💖
As soon as I hear Selena's voice my eyes well with tears always and I'm just so sad she was taken from us way to early. Could you imagine crossover Selena in the late 90's that would have been amazing to see.
Along with this, Selena: The Movie would be a good one for the movie channel. J Lo in one of her first movie roles. This song always gives me chills. It’s just so beautiful. This album, Dreaming of You (which is another great song) was recorded weeks before she died and was released after her death.
Before you guys move on to her other songs in Spanish, ya'll should def check out "Dreaming of you". As you were able to see, the music video for this song is just compilations of her, this is because she was killed soon after recording these songs for her crossover album. They did something similar with Dreaming of you, which was also part of what was going to be her debut in the American market. A treasure for her fans.
This is probably my favorite Selena song. In her movie it showed that she wanted to sing American pop music but her father wanted her to sing in Spanish but she didn't want to because she wasn't fluent in Spanish & had to learn the language so she could sing all the songs & know what she was singing. I think she was born & raised in Texas & her parents spoke fluent Spanish. Just to show all kids don't always speak the same language as their parents. My ex-husbands mother was German & he flunked German in high-school which was embarrassing to my ex mother n law. 💔 Selena's story is so insane & heartbreaking all because of greed! 🥺😱🤯
Selena has music that makes you feel every emotion. From true love and happiness to heartbreak and everything in between. She even covered Janet Jackson and Michael Jackson and various other 80' artist. Selena was beautiful inside and out. She would talk to kids about staying in school and reward some of them by taking them to McDonald's. She was humble and loved her fans. She didn't see herself as a huge star. She will always be the Queen of Tejano music. You don't have to understand Spanish she had a way of making you feel what she is singing. Dive in to her music I promise you will love her music.
Her story is SOOO sad. She was so talented and she had one of the best smiles I've ever seen. I just can't believe what a waste...we should've had her far, far longer.
It really is sad and the fact it was someone she trusted makes it so much worse. If it was just a random stranger or a case of wrong place, wrong time it would have been tragic enough but with it being who it was just makes the whole thing cut so much deeper.

I remember the ads for the movie about her, but I've never seen it. The video montage here is so very touching, and clearly a loving tribute to a beautiful, extraordinary young woman. I'll have to add this album to my wish list. Thanks for the reaction.
She was so special...this came out right out after she passed...RIP.
I watched the Selena movie dozens of times (starring Jennifer Lopez who was phenomenal!) and I adored Selena the singer and person. RIP in peace always, sweet Selena.
I love the movie also and have seen it several times from the time it came out. The soundtrack is really good too. Such a beautiful, talented woman.
“Anything for Selena’s!!”
Every time I hear Selena I get tears in my eyes. Thank you for reacting to this Beautiful soul. Rest in Paradise Queen Selena🙏🏽 🇲🇽
She had such a beautiful voice, and she was a beautiful soul.
Listening to this song and knowing she is gone , just makes her voice sound angelic❤
Dreaming of you is a good song from her as well and a favorite of mine
I literally can't think of any other female artist who LITERALLY had it all like Selena...voice, looks, body, dancing, storytelling ability, personality and on and on...
This song is so much more emotional when you know The Whole story and the movie
This song brings tears to my eyes every time. Such a beautiful young soul who loved life so much. There is a special place in Heaven for this Angel.
It’s a given to say that Selena’s voice was beautiful and elegant.
But the compositions behind her voice were next level, and they take you to places unexpected and rarely felt.
Check out the official video to the Selena song Bidi Bidi Bom Bom. So good. Very upbeat.
She was such a beautiful woman it is so very sad that she was murdered she didn't deserve that
She was a god given talent and even though I don't speak Spanish I still love her voice it was truly magnificent rest in peace Spanish Angel
This makes me cry just thinking about how she was taken so quickly and senseless. She was crossing over to mainstream and paved the way for so many. 😢
Such a beautiful voice. I remember this song. She was the first Tejana singer I remember crossing over to the pop charts. Gone too soon.
Selena has one of the most astonishing voice's EVER!
Selena is universal. Great choice!!!
What was Selena like in person?
Don’t know if u have seen the movie! U need to!!! She was amazing and her life was cut way toooo soon!!!!
Como La Flor indeed!!!
This isn't in my wheelhouse of music taste but I find this song incredibly emotional and well done. Her voice is amazing, the guitar parts that come in and out is done so tastfully and the bass brings a bit of the funk.
You guys need to watch her movie. It will answer most of your questions about her and SO much more. Very good movie about her life. Very interesting
If you haven't already, you guys should watch the Selena movie. It's really well done
I'm from Texas, and I Remember when her life was ended by a gun at a early age!! I remember Like it was Yesterday it was the 90s and everyone in school was crying 😭😭! Even Me I couldn't believe it!
Such a beautiful voice and taken way to soon
Just keep in mind all she accomplished, in her short 23 years on this earth. She was violently taken away, on that fateful March 31st, 1995. Selena, will keep on living, in all that beautiful music she left for all of us. R.I.P. Tejana Queen. 💖
Selena's voice is outstanding!
Dreaming Of You is so beautiful , such a sad story .
She was a very great singer ❤
Dreaming Of You! Is a must! Great Song!
Como La Flor is a must by Selena
I grew up listening to Bidi Bidi Bom Bom and Dreaming of You as well as this song
As soon as I hear Selena's voice my eyes well with tears always and I'm just so sad she was taken from us way to early. Could you imagine crossover Selena in the late 90's that would have been amazing to see.
I wish I could listen to her for the first time like you guys!
I love Selena ❤️ so sad she died so young RIP
Especially at the hands of a jealous fan/friend

Rip To A Great Singer Selena Quintanilla Perez, We Still Miss You Always
Along with this, Selena: The Movie would be a good one for the movie channel. J Lo in one of her first movie roles.
This song always gives me chills. It’s just so beautiful. This album, Dreaming of You (which is another great song) was recorded weeks before she died and was released after her death.
In a couple of days, this song was Number 1,
Before you guys move on to her other songs in Spanish, ya'll should def check out "Dreaming of you". As you were able to see, the music video for this song is just compilations of her, this is because she was killed soon after recording these songs for her crossover album. They did something similar with Dreaming of you, which was also part of what was going to be her debut in the American market. A treasure for her fans.
She is so beautiful, I could listen to her all day RIP sweet soul 💕
🥺😱🤯
Makes me cry gone too soon beautiful soul 🌹
She was so lovely. The Tejano music scene and music in general lost a sparkling star with her loss. So much talent.
