    Look at it this way, they broke another countrys law and the consequence of that is death. The Bali 9 knew exactly what they were getting into and they still chose to do it. Imagine how many lives would have been destroyed and ended due to the drugs they were exporting. Im not saying they deserve it as such but i definitely dont feel sad for them.

      i mean jesus they broke the law but the point is that things are very different from what they were 10 years ago and thus executing them was a blatant waste of two decent human beings which could have been avoided. basically you're saying they deserved to die by principle which means you're kinda fucked

  • @moyga

    A lot of people seem to be saying that you should be aware what the punishment is before you commit a crime. The severity of the consequences for a crime is largely irrelevant to most people who commit crimes for a number of reasons and this is why having incredibly harsh punishments has been shown to not have a significantly increased deterrence effect beyond a relatively low level of punishment.
    The reason the consequences are often unimportant is because most people who commit crimes either
    (A) think they will not get caught
    (B) are simply not aware, or not thinking about the consequences at the time of acting e.g. they commit a crime during a moment of panic, lust, rage, confusion, they are ignorant of what they consequences are, they have a moment of recklessness or foolishness, like teenagers who put their head outside train doors, they are intoxicated and so on, or
    (C) They are aware of the consequences and think they might get caught but they consider themselves to be in such a desperate situation that they have to do it anyway and take the risk, regardless of what the consequences are, this could be because they are being coerced by someone or because they feel they need to do it to survive etc.

    I can see both sides of the argument, it was cold of the Indonesian president to not show mercy and execution for drug trafficking seems wrong, especially as an Australian, but at the same time, I'm sure all drug traffickers are aware of the death penalty in Indonesia and what those 9 people did was illegal and if they were successful, they would of brought potential death to those people in Indonesia. It's Indonesia's laws and the Indonesian President was voted in to be strict on drug trafficking laws.
    If it was me, I would of let them live their lives in Prison and offered parole as a sign of mercy, but it's Indonesia's laws, don't do the crime, if you can't do the time, the law is the law, you have to respect it, no matter what country you're in.

    This is a topic I could speak on for hour and hours about, and I was actually in bali when the executions took place. Here are some facts;
    1. They were pulled aside at sydney airport, questioned (for which they lied and said they were going on a surfing holiday), and warned that info authorities were being informed.
    2. They did not leave there hotel rooms for 4 days when they arrived. (DING DING DING)
    3. They admitted to smuggling 5 TIMES prior.
    4. They had already been caught bringing drugs into Australia once before. (They didn't fucking learn then!)
    5. Andrew chan is responsible for putting a 16 year old girl in prison in Hong Kong. He threatened to kill her, if she didn't do it.
    I don't believe in the death penalty, I think it's barbaric and extremely outdated, but Australia had NO RIGHT threatening Indonesia and trying to tell Indonesia what they can and can't do! Also, of course they were rehabilitated. Everyone is sorry once they are in jail.

    If you swim in shark infested waters while covered in slabs of meat, and you get bitten, it's not the sharks fault. They knew what they were doing, they knew the consequences, and it doesn't matter how long ago it was, it's the fact that they done it in the first place.

      Drawback I am against the death sentence. But I don't feel any sympathy towards those that are not only stupid enough to put themselves in that situation, but to also be selfish enough to not only hurt their families but also the relationship between 2 countries.
      Also the fact that people keep trying to shift the blame onto everyone other then the drug smugglers, and the fact that people have even suggested a minute silence (the same honor that we give our ANZAC heroes) for those people disgusts me.

    • @DrawbackDrawback
      @DrawbackDrawback 9 лет назад

      Jesse Wrangell Yes I get that. They definitely shouldn't get a one minute silence or anything like that but the argument is about the death penalty and how these people don't deserve it because their crime didn't fit the punishment. Seeing as you are against the death penalty I've got nothing else to argue.
      We're on the same page.

    Their country their laws, these guys would of known the risk and penalties if they were caught. Justice is swift even if did seem cold, but it will send out a message that Indonesia do not tolerate drug trafficking.

    On the ball Alex Williamson these men have been innocent for years now and they can't have been executed for something that happened 10 years ago

    I don't think that the death penalty is right. But they new the consequences. And in every airport it says that the death penalty is the law.

    Obviously I don't agree with them being executed but the fact that all people seem to care about is that they're Australian as if that makes them special or different from the countless Indonesians dying everyday for the same crime. I don't see Australia fighting for their freedom or against these unjust laws but specifically for these people just because they were born in this country. Personally I have no sympathy for those idiots they knew the consequences, but my heart goes out for their family for losing them over something so pointless. Also if the government would have let them off it would have shown weakness and may have encouraged more people to try it knowing they may just get off. The fact that they were given a minute of silence shows them off as some sort of heroes when just the other day thousands of innocent people died in earthquakes in Nepal. You've been watching to many current affairs Alex
