- There are many strange and fascinating facts buried in the long, bizarre history of the Olympics. The Summer Olympics of 2016 look almost nothing like those from a century ago, and it’s not just the slick presentation and technological advancements in the individual events. Everything about the Summer and Winter Olympics used to be a whole lot weirder and, well, pretty backwards. In many ways, the games have acted as a microcosm of what was happening in the world at the time, for better or for worse.

*Fun fact:* Emperor Nero actively participated in the Olympics that were held during his reign, specially in chariot races and music contests that he himself introduced, "casually" winning in each and every one of those competitions (even though he even fell from his chariot during one race) After Nero's deposition and subsequent death by the Senate, the judges of said Olympics declared the Emperor's victories void

As a modern Olympian, I low key wish I could travel back in time and compete against the ancient Olympians knowing what I know in this age about periodization and training.

The Highland Games tradition in the United States has a similar history. When they started the competitions were strictly athletic. Then, sometime in the last half of the 19th century, piping and dancing competition was introduced. Today piping and dancing have become the main events (disclaimer: as a piper, I can't claim to be entirely unbiased) with athletics playing an important, but somewhat periferal role.

Yes. “Corn” was a translation quirk, not an actual reference to what we know as corn/maize today. They (specifically, British scholars) were actually referring to grain in general. Maize of course is indigenous to the Americas and wouldn’t be arriving to Greece for quite some time.

Even though gladiators did have groupies they regular kept women away from them in order to not corrupt them. Now they have become more brutal in how they get women and kids into the parties by providing mk ultra victims and then killing them after their programming breaks down which is around 30 years old.

6:17 - Apparently, you didn't bother to notice that that coin clearly shows the wrestlers wearing loin cloths. That's because it f***ing hurts to have your scrotum pinned to the mat (or more likely, sand) with your opponent's knee. Many races were also not run in the nude, but clad in full armor, with shield.

The modern Olympics aren't a really big deal these days. Maybe all the cheating has something to do with that. Anyway, I think that the IOC should go back to having ALL THE ATHLETES perform naked. Like in the olden days. I know I'd watch women's basketball or ladies volleyball or women's badminton, wouldn't you ??

People today hear "naked," and assume it means birthday suit, no more. It could refer to a man in his shirtsleeves, or a woman in her shift, both of which might look overly dressed in some contexts today: He's working in the fields; she's taking a dip in the private pond on her family's huge, private estate.

ok so why to you pixelate all the old masters works of art. vases, statues and art work. very few channels on RUclips do that. It's the only thing i don't like about your channel. Is it some form of of modern morality? These works of art have been around for centuries and displayed in very prominent museums. AND other channels so them without being demonetized or taken down.

Its funny- sex before a workout/performance is 100% better for you. After sex, the male body surges with testosterone because its replenishing itself. Therefore the athlete performs better due to higher testosterone levels.
