We did this trip in the beginning of MAY. Also, you can see all of these spots that we stopped at on a map at our Patreon - www.patreon.com/c/throughmylens
Troll here! Great tour of our state. Glad you two had a wonderful trip. Every year we drive up to a part of upper Michigan we hadn’t seen before. I’m 55 and still discovering its beauty. Can’t beat the crystal clear lakes. Great video!!
Worked on a large fiber build throughout the entire UP for a couple of years. I still remember my first trip to the UP and it was in the fall. Such an incredible and unique place. I miss the UP a lot and think about it often. Ive been all over the country and the UP will always be one of my favorites.
I knew very little about Michigan apart from its sports teams prior to your videos. Thank you for showing so much interesting footage and teaching me about this awesome state.
Troll here from Detroit😂... Glad you guys enjoyed our "hidden gem" of a state. Next trip 3 must see things: Fox Theater, aka downtown Detroit's crown jewel. And "The Big House", 30 min away in Ann Arbor, aka the biggest stadium in the Western hemisphere. (Record 115,000+ fans for football). Woodward Dreamcruise 1st weekend every August. With over 2 million bring out their toy cars, it's by far the biggest "Cruise" in the world. Any car you've ever heard of will be there, Model Ts to Hyper Cars.
Yooper here, been watching you since before you really got big. The large part of the Sturgeon River gorge is farther down river. It really does get much larger than what you saw. Yes Yooper and Troll.
Michigander here. June is an excellent time for waterfalls because there are leaves on the trees but you also have more recent snowmelt so the falls have more water. 4:12 - I'm surprised you didn't go to Lake of the Clouds 27:21 - Oswald's Bear Ranch in Newberry is worth the detour, if you visit again. 1:28:15 - I'm very glad you went to Marvin's! They are being forced out soon by retail developers.
Loved the video, my wife and I have been discovering a lot of Michigan the past few years. Muskegon is a beautiful city to spend some time as well, great burgers at the Station Grill. Also, Hell is a quirky little place.
Good to see you guys out and about, and scenes from my home State warms my heart. Yes, the UP has its fair share of tourist trapped Pops🙄 and yes ‘Trolls’ occupy the lower peninsula😅
So amazing to be able to come along on these journeys with you and your pops, especially as an Australian. Your videos have introduced me to parts of America I never knew about.
Great video! When you come back to Michigan to have to visit the Porcupine Mountains State Park in the UP. The lake of the clouds, bonanza falls, presque isle waterfall loop, cascade falls and agate falls trails are not to be missed!
Welcome to my state! Michigan has so much to offer, and it's absolutely beautiful. Thanks for sharing what we have to offer. I got engaged and married in Charlevoix, which is where my husband's family owns a cabin, so we spend a lot of our time in Charlevoix. I'm glad you enjoyed your time there! Fun fact: the Mackinac Bridge is the longest suspension bridge (between anchorages) in the Western Hemisphere.
My favorite place to get Pasties is in St Ignace. The place is close to the bridge and ia called A Taste of the Upper Peninsula. Best pasties are the original with beef and rutabaga with gravy! When I was 3 and 4 we had to take the ferry across from Mackinaw City to St. Ignace while the bridge was being built. Vendors used to come to the line of cars waiting, and sell pasties.
There are so many beautiful places in Michigan to see. The Slweping Bear Sand Dunes, Atlanta Michigan area is filled with Elk and Bear and fun to try and see. Ludington State Park as a unique trail to a light house with crazy beautiful sand dunes and a place you can see a sunken ship.
I’ve lived in Michigan my entire life and I never even heard of Atlanta Michigan ! It looks so beautiful, I’ll have to go and check it out ! I live in canton Michigan
I'm a born and raised troll and I don't get to the UP as much as I would like. Great video, I loved the different waterfalls you went to, especially Pictured rocks. Glad you enjoyed your trip to my home state.
I know it is difficult to hit all of the best spots in Michigan but you missed Ludington State park and Silver Lake. Alpena is great too just out of your way on this trip. .Overall you hit some great spots! Definitely stay at Grand Hotel next time, it is worth the experience. You guys did a great job covering Michigan!
Thank you for sharing your trip to Michigan. We were pleasantly surprised that we had visited nearly all the same spots on our own month long trip to the UP in July. Watching your video was like going back and reliving it all again. Too bad you couldn’t explore the Keweenaw Peninsula while you were there. We spent a week hiking, biking and kayaking, visiting a copper mine and climbing to the peak of Mt. Baldy. We’re still working our way thru all the photos and videos for our blog and RUclips channel, RView From Here. Thanks again for sharing!
Love your videos. I'm a lifelong michigander. Been to some of the places you went and have found some places I will be going. Thank you. You two would be fun to go on a road trip with.
What a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon! Michigan looks beautiful- I enjoyed seeing the new video parts and liked seeing the other videos all put together for a cohesive look at the state. My favourite part was that giant wooden troll. Thanks Josh and Pops!
Downtown Detroiter here you were not far from my condo…! Glad you got to enjoy Detroit and what it has to offer. It’s a really cool city and so much to do and getting better and better after years of strife. We love it here. We also have a place up north in northern Michigan and you covered so many areas that we go to all the time and love it too. So many beautiful areas and lakes and hiking trails and nature and really nice small towns. Michigan is a great state and so glad you guys enjoyed it. Come on back anytime, your video is really really well done!
The black hole was slightly terrifying!🤣 i laughed about that for 15 minutes. As always youve given us another great video and narration. You two are wonderful😊
Ahhh!!! You two always come to my rescue when I need to get away. Thank you for leading the way to new adventures. I’ve taken advantage of your San Francisco adventures!!
The Upper Peninsula is great. Hopefully you are able to see Marquette, MI, Copper Harbor MI and Houghton MI along with the Porcupine Mountains. It's beautiful!
This is a wonderful video, thank you so much for sahring this. I especially love how you call your dad "Pops"! I am born and raised in Michigan yet haven't explored the U.P. in years. Using a lot of your tips for a planned trip in June of next year. Cheers to you and Pops.
I've stayed at little motel in Mackinaw, highly recommend, took my friends from England there and to the island. Born and raised in Michigan and there's nothing like a Michigan summer!! Great video 😊
I watched this last night and loved it. Used to spend summer vacations in Michigan and miss it so much. I've been to a lot of these places but I was heavier on the lighthouse tours. You just missed Grand Haven by just a few miles and it is a jewel in the Michigan crown. The Coast Guard Festival in late July is stellar. I can say the best thing about a hot central Indiana summer was going north to Michigan.
Beautiful video guys 😊 I live in a little town called Central Lake, between Petoskey & Traverse City. Michigan is beautiful Winter, Spring, summer, and fall! 👍🏻🤗
This was great. Thanks for an awesome saturday josh, pops. Absolutely incredible thanks for spending the afternoon with us. Greatly appreciated and enjoyed!!!
Long slide overlook is one of my favorite places. We have done a lot of overlanding trips in the UP on ATV's and Long Slide still stands out over many of the amazing sites up there.
Great video. I remember seeing Castle Rock years ago when touring the area while our sons were at hockey tournaments in St. Ignace. Now I want to go back and explore the area, even if it means a lot of steps. :) The UP is definitely worth the visit... in the summer.
Loved this video! Thank you for showing me things in my state that I've never seen before! Kilwins chocolates and Detroit pizza alone make Michigan special.
The GR public museum has one of my favorite exhibits. The wildlife exhibit that folds from Corn field to forest are the stages that would be taken if the farm lands were left to revert to their natural forest ecosystem. Mitten is rad. Sad you missed Madcap for some coffee.
For anyone coming to Michigan from out of state, you will most likely come in on I69 out of Indiana after getting off 80/90 east west toll road. As soon as you come into Michigan the first city you will come to is Coldwater Michigan. I grew up there. Around 14000 citizens but if you like the water the south, and west side of town are lined with lakes linked together with channels. The south chain is around 22 miles in length, the west probably 10-12. South chain lined with million dollar homes and an island with a golf course on it. West chain more the locals, EXCELLENT fishing, walleye, perch pike bass, seriously world class fishing. Most cities have a lake maybe a big lake but it's unique to be able to travel 22 miles through 7 -8 different lakes. Also a 1950s style drive in root beer stand,as well as a drive in movie theater. Also an 1800s steam powered locomotive called the little river railroad that does short day trips, sometimes a theatrical experience. It's small it's quaint, but my home town has a lot to offer to someone on vacation. Check it out
The Black Hole evened the score for Pops. He's afraid of heights and you're claustrophobic. The UP was gorgeous. Like Pops I like waterfalls and they were amazing. And like him too many steps. My feet and ankles won't do em anymore. Love the mushroom houses. Amazing how many parks Michigan has. Lake Superior is an awesome backdrop to almost everything. With all the goodies you two eat it's a wonder either of you can fit into your clothes. That fudge really looked so good I could almost taste it. Thank you for the armchair tour of museums, historic sites and tourist traps.
Born n raised in lower south east Michigan love seeing different places I haven’t explored yet but want to.. n oddly enough I’ve never had a pastie never even heard of of them till I hit my 40’s lol one thing to do on my bucket list is to find me a yooperlite in the UP..
There is an old indian tail about the Manitou Islands and sleeping bear Dunes. The island are the baby bears and the Dunes are the momma. Look the tail up. It is kind of a sad one. And you stopped in my home town of Cadillac!
You two Missed going north when you were at the Mackinaw Bridge to Sault Ste.Marie to the Locks to see the Bulk Carries going thru the locks Up Really Close to You .!
You did an excellent job of showing many the Upper Peninsula’s charms. Just had to let you know that I checked out the Pink Pony this summer (2024) per your review. It did not disappoint. I watched your Mackinac video.
Trolls here such beauty and majestic scenery in the up for sure . Thanks for the video veiws . Your young and strong 💪 great way to see the up from here in michigan❤.
By Grand Marias you were at devils slide. Lol oooohh. I've got home movies of me running down it and falling, tumbling down lol. Thanks for a great memory.
Your Pops, gentle majestic man...wink! So also thanks for bringing us on tour...myself from up in the Sault Ontario side of the border I'm happy that you covered all this area!
I love this video..I live in Onaway michigan...the place where the big musket and the big gus chainsaw where made, they where built by moran iron works ..absolutely wonderful video...thanks for what you do!
I am with Pops! No heights LOL. Loved this. I live in Ludington and have only taken one vacation to Virginia Beach in my adult life. Never took a Michigan vacation. Will have to put it on my bucket list.
Being a " Michigander" myself, I really enjoyed this video. I live in the lower peninsula, but also have property in the UP, and I have driven up/down countless times, but after watching your video, I'm going to take my time, & check out some of the places you stopped at.
That was a fantastic trip beautiful scenery ❤ I love you and your dad bonding in these trips your a good son 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 keep traveling together 😅 and seeing the country God Bless You Both 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I have lived in Michigan my whole life as my father & mother, and all my grandparents as well, and No we don't call ourselves trolls, yuppers are kind of stuck up and call us that, but we don't do it..... yuppers are on their own scale. We are all Michiganders, that's what we call ourselves.
You and your father did an amazing job with this trip , I’ve lived in Michigan all my life. We actually just took a week trip this summer and did some exploring. When I was a small child my parents took my siblings and I on lots of trips in Michigan , but I was young so I don’t remember that much of the U.P. But I am thinking of taking a trip to the upper peninsula this coming summer. Your trip will make a good road map to some awesome things to do. Thanks again for the great video !
I have lived in Michigan for all but a few of my 75 years. My wife and i really enjoyed this video! It was so well made! You visited most of the highlights. I would suggest a few places in the U.P. to check out on your next visit. Porcupine State Park is not far from Ironwood and the ski jump. There are several good waterfalls on the Presque Isle River near where it flows into Lake Superior. Another highlight there is the Lake of the Clouds. Copper Harbor is located at the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula. Marquette would be a good place to stay a little longer, particularly Sugarloaf Mountain just north of town. Great view of Lake Superior, and i know how much you like steps! Sault Ste. Marie is at the eastern end of the U.P. It is really cool to watch the great lakes freighters go thru the Soo locks. I would also point out that Mackinaw Island is really crowded from June through labor day. It's a great place to visit, but be prepared for the crowds. Again, great job and thanks!
1:16:06. Love the old rugged Cross museum set at the site of the McDowell funeral home. It was owned by my relatives and I used to spend some time there spending the night above the funeral home.
Thank you for reminding me about ore dock in Marquette. I couldn’t recall in my memory what town was that. I also had another picture of building I can’t place on the map.
We did this trip in the beginning of MAY. Also, you can see all of these spots that we stopped at on a map at our Patreon - www.patreon.com/c/throughmylens
Glad ya you guys made it finally! 😁
I hope you guys did Dark Sky park in Mackinaw city it's incredible
You deserve an award for this video. This is the most complete video I've seen for Michigan. Thanks for covering both peninsulas.
You said it! Your video is half the reason why I came home to Michigan.
Pure Michigan! Love your channel. So happy you and Pops enjoyed our beautiful state!
Thanks so much!! It was incredible!

Best video I've seen about Michigan 💙
Michigan is one of my favorite states! So many hidden gems and best state park system! Loved this episode/love your channel💗
I wouldn't argue, it is incredible!

Me too and I have lived in Michigan all my life. Great video.
Yooper here, been watching you since before you really got big. The large part of the Sturgeon River gorge is farther down river. It really does get much larger than what you saw. Yes Yooper and Troll.
Appreciate the support over the years! I will have to hike further down next time!
@ThroughMyLens hope you get a chance to go back to the Upper peninsula. You need to explore the Keweenaw area.
Born and raised in Oxford, Michigan. I had an awsome childhood. I now live in KY. I miss my town some days.
The Dark Sky Park west of Mackinaw City is a hidden gem. You can find fossils and beautiful rocks and wade in Lake Michigan for a long way out.
Glad to see this as I missed it last time I was up there. Good to know it's worth it! I'll definitely stop by on our trip north next year. Thanks.
Josh I love your videos and soft tone to your voice. You are so blessed to be able to share all this with your dad.
Michigander here. June is an excellent time for waterfalls because there are leaves on the trees but you also have more recent snowmelt so the falls have more water.

We are all Michiganders, that's what we call ourselves.
Absolutely! 👍🏻
Well done content as always!
Glad you enjoy it!
I just love your channel. Thanks for all of the fun.
Thanks for watching!
I've seen all 5 of Thomas Dambo's trolls in Washington but my goal is to see all of them worldwide! I love Benny the Beardfisher!
It would be so cool to go on a journey to see them all! I just saw one in the Virgin Islands a few weeks ago
Love your videos . Thanks again for taking the time to share your adventures with your dad. I swear I could taste those warm donuts.
We really enjoy your videos since you focus on the simpler pleasures in travel.
Glad you like them! Thanks for the comment!
No problem, I was blown away when I saw it!
You'll want to visit the Kellogg factory in Battle Creek, Michigan, and the magic capitol of the world in Colon, Michigan.
