- The AM38 test boat, better known as the Mule, touches both sunlight and the sea for the first time. Half the size of the AC75 racing boats set to be used in the 36th America's Cup (Auckland, New Zealand, 2021), the Mule has New York Yacht Club American Magic, the U.S. Challenger for sailing's highest prize, flying across Narragansett Bay near Newport, Rhode Island.
Bloody hell that looks quick. I can see some carnage on the horizon
Love it or hate it, you can't deny it is an amazing piece of technology. I love traditional sailing but it's these sort of advances that trickle down to "ordinary" yachts just like F1 does with cars. Shine on you crazy diamonds!
Super high end racing yacht. Guy doing up a screw with a ruler :😂
measured turns....
Imperial system
Hey you've gotta work with what you have haha. Duct tape is still gonna work even on a seven figure piece of carbon!
If you're not used to slotted screws that's probably not a bad idea, keeps the tool from slipping off and maring the deck. Of course he should have used a brace and bit, but they probably don't have one. I would have lent them mine if they asked...
No slip
It is going to be a cracking America's cup, can't wait!
Wow I can’t wait for Auckland. This gets me excited
the best scene is at the last 15 seconds where the sailboat, a powerboat and the seagulls were all racing together, all seemingly having fun
Send it T.Hutch - I'm happy to see an american challenge looking on point!
From Annapolis!
Technology demonstrators leading the way. Gotta love 'em.
Awesome boat and very fast! Thanks
i love to sail but i could never love it that much hats off to you
Looks good out there. Well balanced and moving swiftly nicely! ;-)
'executing the game plan' ah corpospeak. Joy
Sponsored by that most American of companies Airbus.
Beautiful
Doesn't Boeing have its version available yet?
@Brian Buckmaster The fuck is wrong with you m8
Quality boat being made with one ruler at a time
Very cool guys. Looking forward to seeing you in Auckland.
I call this design the "Pissing Dog" Sure it is a nice blend of hull and foils, but having a foil sticking out to the side like a dog taking a piss will certainly lead to some boats getting tangled up considering the close proximity racing that this drag racing kind of event encourages. Love to watch each time, and good to see that the boats were not simply going to continue getting larger cats and requiring more crew.
Very innovative we are us kiwis' seeing such a magnificent prototype come to life is very satisfying.
Sailing is being redefined!!! I'm very proud of how it has evolved. Good luck to Team Oracle at the next Americas Cup. Hopefully, the cup, as the name hints, will come back to the States.
Haha Team Oracle have not entered. After stacking the deck in the last event and getting destroyed regardless, They have not entered. Little Larry can't handle losing.
@@_BrianJones No Oracle and others are focused on sailgp... A world foiling sailing program with foiling 50 cats that should have been the next ac boats not these silly new ac montri's . So lots of awesome foiling in 2019 with these cats, the superfoilers, extreme sailing series. AC is only a shadow compared to theses events unfortunately.

There's a reason that its called the AMERICA'S cup, because it belongs to America.
@@__________7483 So why with all the resources can't you build a boat or train a crew who is able to win the cup then.
@@milesmoore8705 You keep telling yourself that Miles if it makes you feel better. Will your " Extreme sailing series " be still going in 150 years? Lots of history in the Americas cup that is why it is the premier sailing event. Larry is just a sore loser a typical American trait
Really S T U N N I N G. It´s state of the art in sailing. That´s the attitude of the cup. W O R D.
Great video and congrats on your first sail.
Its a CGI video, not real...
Amazing.. I've been waiting for this type of clip.. thanks so very much .. Fantastic
Look 👀 out porpoise 🐬........
this could cut you in half.
I can’t wait till I can buy one at Walmart. I love 💕 it.
THAT´S REALLY OUTSTANDING AND BREATHTAKING.
Finally seeing it in action, cool
Damn that is quick... Can't wait for team nz reveal.
OMG. This is the future of sailing. A McConaghyn38 re-built for Americas Cup training. They will be 75 ft long . Imagine.
So I was station is NATTC Pensacola and I got to see the mule on the gulf doing practice rounds and was able to get some great shots of it and the support boats
Faaaark that looks fast af!
I would have loved to be part off the electrical engineering développment !!
Nice work!
This is so exciting!
And this is just the MULE. I love the America's Cup Culture it demands you dream big. It chooses the path least travelled [ or sailed ] and expects you to re-discover your personal potential daily and invites everyone to raising the standard of excellence more frequent than daily. HGBLACK
Sick boat!
Goose bumps
it looks so bleeping dumb but so freaking rad at the same time
paul GLOVER bet it's even more rad being on it screaming across the bay mate. Image what two full size boats going balls out will look like. Can't wait
Did you mean fucking?
Waterworld. I,M LOVING HOW HIGH-TECH IS MAKING BOATS SOO COOL
What, you never seen hydrofoils?
Beautiful
I'm curious what kind of lift/load distribution you all are using on the sails. Elliptical is what most industry guys use in the airplane world but recent studies of old ideas are proving that efficiency is still hiding in plain sight in regards to the bell shaped lift distribution model that creates negative induced drag at the tips. With as much twist as sailboats have in the sail, I'd think that Horten and Prandtl's philosophies might have a place in the sail trimming and designing world. Any info on this topic??? Thanks.
FYI: "MULE" (Note: According to Wikipedia: A development mule (test mule, or simply mule) in the automotive industry is a testbed vehicle equipped with prototype components requiring evaluation. They are often camouflaged to deceive competitors and thwart a curious automotive press.)
I'm impressed!
Magnificent - bring it on!
The dude with the multi purpose screwdriver musta been a kiwi...
Bravo, c'est incroyable, RDV au Vendée globe
Dans des creux de 10 mètres ?
So this is what the America's Cup has sunk to? The rot started to set in following the 1987 event.
Incredible ! Just waouw !
Excellent
Greetings From a 6 Metre Called Vega!
With this type of boat, it seems more fit to treat races as they do in cycling, a time trial bike and a road bike. The UCI, pro cycling's governing body, had concerns with using the extreme features of a time trial bike; arrow bars that can hook another rider, precarious rider position in close proximity racing and other extreme bike features, they simply found them unsafe for group racing. It seems these AC75's have very similar design features (or issues?), like protruding wings that can hook another boat, precarious racing positions. It seems the sport is heading towards a time trial type event and not close boat to boat tactical racing around a mark. One bad hooking of two boats and both boats could be done for the entire series. Maybe just make two separate boat constructs; one for time trialing and one for close boat to boat racing.
Very cool.
I wonder how the speeds compare to Ineos UK's T5? anyone hazard a guess?
Love it!!! How much?
Amazing!
cool vid . cheap shot on the name,. NY yacht club is back
New Zealand boat builders are always thinking outside the box, and everyone will copy them.
Ficking awesome boat! I want my Catalina 25 to do that !!!!!
Terry looks cold and uncomfortable, he wishes the boats were just regular Monohulls. Frankly I’m with him. Monohulls with t-rex foil arms are just amusing. The big ones are going to be yard sales over and over.
Insane!!!
Next time a powerboater says sails are slow, I can direct them here!
I hope that thing has airbags and seatbelts.
Awesome!!!! Can’t wait...
love it
Wow. LIFTOFF!!
Holy shit :0 im in love
It looks like the setting angle of the front wing needs to be decreased in order to lift the nose a little up.
Mega top
Now that's bad ass... Let's kick the world's ass!!!
Just learnt: Dude not even can distinguish a ruler from a screwdriver, while they build ridiculously fast, slightly unorthodox -sailboats- winddriven hightec machinery ...
Still got a sail and a hull, ergo sailboat.
With both vertical and windward lift generated by a single foil I wonder how control surfaces, attack angles, fore and aft location, and dihedral are controlled, not to mention the offset from center drag. Got any technical info available for a retired foil builder?
drive.google.com/file/d/1xZRwGU-q4zGlD1jfStdY2kpzVB9PM96w/view section 13. Beyond those regulations I'd expect much of the info is proprietary.
@@LeCharles07 Thanks, I'll read that.
I don't think I said what I meant to say, sigh happens more often than I like to admit. This is probably not the place, but I want to start a discussion about the forces involved in making the thing fly and how to control them. The design is reminiscent of the 1940's US Navy ladder foiler rather than a moth with a single, central foil. Can't think of any other successful wing foiler (for want of a better term) monohull that actually flys.
My interest stems from 1963 when I observed an engineer type try to get a single aquacat hull to fly on wing foils on lake Quannapowitt in Massachusetts.
such a nice sailboat why does it run on a 3000HP engine?
First dibbs on the nick name:
FLYING MULLET 🇦🇺🤠👍
Was that Courageous they pulled in next to?
W0W W0W W0W !
What happened to the Catamarans? I thought they were faster.
Consider total surface area of a catamaran in water then consider the same for a hydrofoil surface area when a certain design speed creates lift on the two or three aerodynamic wings in the water. Compare surface areas and the one with less surface area will have less drag than the cat with more surface area in water. The one with less drag at speed will be faster out of the water. The delicate balance of predicted speed to lift a sailboat out of water is what separates racing design in sailboats.
How many anzacs behind this 😁
Yes!!
But if you’re not in the water, how is it a boat ?
Well excuse me flying a drone at night over a bridge is a serious felony especially if it’s a Dji mavic pro😂
While I like this concept (not too crazy about the electric motor but like the shape and think it’s great at 40 odd feet long) I am wondering isn’t this the first time a completely unproven design at the scale designated has been demanded of builders? With big cats you still end up with big cats if the foils don’t work out but these? It seems like an amazing triumph of speculative design over practical engineering, shouldn’t you prove this works first at scale before writing your race rules around it?
Ipressive 😲
up to fifty per cent flight ability
How about some more videos of the boat being sailed and less chatter.
Nice to see America is catching up with the French, at last.
HOLY SMOKES!
omg, exciting stuff go the kiwis
Let’s get the CUP BACK!!!!
Lukas Ethan what are you talking about? We did get the cup back...here in NZ!
Is this team USA or Team Newzealand I'm confused.
Turning marks with anchor lines could be problematic.
W@@WZERs She Does Fly!!! Thanks
nice craft guys... the only question I would have is about naming a Rum Runner fast sailboat that's black with Black Sails " the mule " . I know you guys aren't into the drug scene but I can see you're in California so you should know that that word has some other connotations that might not be congruent with what you were trying to say.
Poignant sway of the power-pendulum obvious here from motorised towards renewables.!
If this doesn't generate excitement, nothing will! Hope the engineers built a lot of strength margin in the foils in case they hit some foreign objects during practice or God forbid, the race.
Can I have that when you are done...?
insane
HOW FAST IS IT ?
Wow
impressive, hope it will work. The Foil mania is sometimes going a bit too far. If it doesn't work, you can All Race on VOR 70 or VOR 65. Still amazing to watch, and motor boats can follow them.
American Magic??? Seriously? Knock off of Kiwi Magic, the name of the NZ KZ-7 boat in 1987. And this boat concept a NZ design. Aww shucks, nevermind, good to see the US up and running. Nice job boys, looks amazing!!
Why Boeing doesn't support these kind of things
Holy cats!
Electric motors to lift the outriggers. Hardly pure sailing
I stopped watching 1:45 in. I was hoping someone would explain what "The MULE" is but all of the narration seems to assume we are familiar with this project. You succeeded in not getting your message (whatever it was) heard.
Wouahhhhh
