    The writers of DA:I should really be proud. With Solas they created the backstory for what will be one of the best, most well-rounded villains in gaming history - probably one of the best in storytelling period. When I hear people talk about how Thanos is so 'well written' I want to roll my eyes out of my head. Thanos aint got nothin' on Solas in terms of being a well-written, tragic villain.

      Yeah, Thanos was a great villain no doubt- however I myself lean more towards Solas due to the fact he's not some enigmatic golden guy commanding lackeys from his throne. We get to know Solas as a person first- we grasp his ideals and understand his rationalization. We realize he's a empathetic and passionate man, who seeks wisdom and fights for what he believes to be the good in the world. Even if you make him hate you he feels nothing but remorse for what he'll being upon you-he shows compassion even towards his enemies and those he hates. That in my eyes makes Solas a more compelling villain then Thanos. Thanos is still a great villain however I believe Solas adopts a more grey area in this.

      You can tell that Solas’(Fen’Harel’s) storyline is the DA writers’ baby. I have full confidence in them as they really flesh him out in DA:4. I know he will likely be a casualty of the next game, but not until he really opens the door for so much more story and plot lines to follow. The way the writers handle mystery and reveal in dragon age is so well done. It’s as good as it gets in gaming.

    • @isaaclong6085

      I honestly would say Solas is more of an antihero than villain. He has no malicious intents and he is thoroughly sickened at the sacrifice he believes he must make to restore the world to its natural state (assuming you befriend him, if you punch him and are a total prick it's rather reasonable that he sees only hate in the current world). He is not doing this to kill modern thedas, he is doing it to restore peoples connections to the fade and the world as it should have been. He was a hero in the sense that he freed the slaves from oppression and sealed the power hungry pseudo-gods, but his impulsive decision to seal them and create the veil is his ultimate regret. He is aware that his decision to tear down the veil is not good, but as far as we know it's the only way. He utterly hates what he must do, and that is why he wants to bear the burden of the decision and let no other. In that sense, he is also an antihero. If you romance him as a female lavellan inquisitor, he will refuse to let you join his plan. He expresses that he must be the one to bear this decision, and that he is sorry. A villain is described as being deprived of benevolent intent and desiring total power and the harm of others; solas doesn't desire any of that

    Solas is such a beautifully written character because he's intended to be written off until you can't ignore him anymore. Like my first run through of DAI, I didn't like Solas. He seemed a one note downer who constantly whines and preaches about the elves without ever actually doing anything about their suffering. I rarely took him anywhere, glossed over his storyline and quest, and had the urge to say, "Shut up, Solas!" any time he talked. Then that lore bomb dropped and my second play through I did his romance and he never left my party. I was hanging on every word he said and loving all the hints I missed and the tragic romance between him and Lavellan. In terms of sheer impact on the world of Thedas, Solas will always be the best companion and love interest in Dragon Age.

    Regarding the fall of the Dales, there's a sidequest in the Emerald Graves that deals with the start of it: an elf fell in love with a human woman from a village near the edge of the Dales (Red Crossing). The elven man's sister convinced her fellows the humans were turning her brother against his own people, so the elves rode out to the village to get their fellow back. The elf's human lover saw the other elves coming and was killed but her screams roused the other villagers who were also killed by the elves - this massacre started the whole shebang with the Chantry and ended with the second elven nation being brought down

      I might add that was just the last spark.The excuse. In the Hakkon DLC the first Inquisitor is asked to return to the Dales to convince the Dalish to make peace and not antagonize the humans any further. And the Emperor of Orlais was trying to stop the Chantry from continuing to antagonize the Dalish with constant attempts to convert them to the Andastrian faith (which is interesting considering he was the emperor considered to be the one behind the resurgence of the Andanstrian Chantry and the Inquisition is later considered to be the ones behind the more militant attacks against non believers).
      So there was a lot of bad blood between Orlais and the Dales (mostly because the nobles wanted the Dales for themselves and the Dalish were kind of dicks to humans too). This event was the last straw as they say. A reason to consider the Dalish bloodthirsty monsters, and a reason for the Dalish to consider humans just backstabbing invaders.

      Solas also flips out about the Blight every time it's brought up...and he's evasive when asked about the connection between Elves and the Blight ("there's nothing any lore..." Doesn't outright say they are unconnected") Maybe the result of Elves hunting Titans the way they did led to Red Lyrium/the Blight and something about putting up the veil stopped it from consuming the world at that time?

    • @mduckernz
      @mduckernz 6 лет назад +14

      TLawton911 I thought Andruil perhaps used or otherwise unleashed the Blight from her use of the Void - which kind of sounds like a death-version of the Fade, where everything is corrupted, and it has a lot of power but it corrupts everything and everyone that touches or uses it - when she brought it back into Arlathan. Perhaps that's why it is black? (I don't know, too many unknowns.)
      So, maybe like an [unintended? deliberate?] Void-bio-weapon?
      Or... perhaps it is itself benign in the Void, but when it's brought back into the Fade or Thedas it starts to leak this instrinsic power it has into everything living around it, corrupting it in the process - which would make the whole Blight yet another a tragic mistake, if true, if unintentional. Or an act of great evil if it was intentional.
      I'm also interested in the relationship between blood magic, the Fade, and the Void, if there is truly such a connection. It's curious that it inhibits use of the Fade, and yet it bestows great power on those who use it... _but_ at the cost of corruption (though it curiously seems not to actually cause them to become Blighted). Is this Void magic seeping through the mechanism of death? IIRC blood magic requires actual death, not just blood (though, correct me if I'm wrong about any of this!). Seems too much of a coincidence, to me, from what I [think] that I know currently, at least.

    • @jamesmartel8381

      @@mduckernz blood magic doesn't inherently require death of someone. Talk to solas about in inquisition. Also we have DAO where you can become a blood mage. all it requires is blood. However the more blood the more power, so people take it further and use all of someones blood. Solas explains that blood magic is not inherently evil as long as you use your own blood or that of a willing participant. Also Merril in Dragon age 2 uses blood magic frequently (her own blood) she just cuts herself to use it. Same with a Hawke blood mage if you go that route.

The blight reminds me alot of the blackvirus in prototype. You can regenerate from an infected body , basically immortality, you can regenerate by corrupting and absorbing , it infects all, your consciousness if dominant controls the rest and keeps the memories. Still, we can hope for the best, last DLCs were much more condensed compared to DAI main game, and i think power amulet exploits were not patched for a reason :) hopefully you won’t be forced to roleplay an inquisitor herbalist with strong feelings for elfroot and shards this time around. (And claiming stuff, so much claiming stuff ~,~)

    The liar distinction is funny because in Trespasser an angry Lavellan can accuse him of lying and Solas says he only lied by omission. I think Solas' statement that what we found paints him in a better light than he deserves is him saying that he's painted as leading the slaves to freedom, whereas in his self-deprecating mind he only used them to further his own goals.

  • @damvid21
    @damvid21 6 лет назад +141

    I dunno if this is common knowledge, or if it's even relevant, but Solas actually means "light" in Irish (pronounced "sullis"). And, as an Irishman, I am well aware of parallels the writers have applied between the elves and the Irish. Dunno if that matters or not, just thought I'd throw it out there!

    • @francisarchambault9910
      @francisarchambault9910 5 лет назад +37

      Indeed. There's a lot, I mean, an absurdly big amount of our world history as inspiration within the Dragon Age mythos.
      The post-veil elves in shambles, scattered, tribe-like, Celt(Gallic)-like, overrun by the Tevinter Imperium (hello roman republic/empire). Which this Empire would steal and incorporate the technologies and culture (the old gods being the evanuris) of the elves, conquer the know world and prosper. Until the leaders broke it apart and a rebellion defeated it. New nations arise from the ashes, Orlais, Ferelden, Antiva, etc (France, England, from the roman empire). There lingers a shadow of the empire (resembling the Byzantine empire) locked in a war with a new foreign power, completely alien to their culture (The Qun resembling the Ottomans/Turkish empires).
      That's what I can think of, out of my head. There's far more.

    "He broke the dreams to stop the Old Dreams from waking". Is it possible the Old Gods and the blight are OLDER than the elves. If Dragons are the blood of the earth and are deeply connected to the fade then they and the Titans must be intrinsically part of creation. As most have guessed the Blight is the power the Evanuris sought this would explain the blighted Titan and the Blight starting Old Gods. I cant wait for DA4.

    THANK YOU!!!
    Dear god, the clap back I get from fellow Solas fans.
    Solas never technically lied and gave the player ALL the signs and warning that he was in fact fenheral.
    I never saw him as a liar, in fact I always took his word point blank, I didn't had a reason to look past it. He is a blunt and frank man. So I wasn't more so surprised that he was the dread wolf, just sad when I found I was right. From the first conversation I knew he was an ancient elf....I didn't know I got it right at the time and I was just joking around with my friend but still. He said he wasn't a city elf, and yet he isn't Dalish. So I'm sitting there "Well then your an ancient elf. There are only 3 kinds of elves, and you certainly don't look like the rest of us...not to mention you sure are tall." Not telling someone isn't lying.
    On a side note. I still think Solas is Charitan, and yes I came up with this myself. Just through even more obvious means, and I didn't have to dig or grasp extra evidence. You can find it too.
    At the Emerald Graves there is a haunted mansion where undead just keep spawning and at an annoying rate too. In that mansion there is a safe haven, the library if you go to the far back of that library there is a painting of Sharitan and a Codex. It was a painting that kept him as he was. He was not altered to be human or hold a key. What I saw was a bald elven man hunched over holding an orb. I remember noticing it after I un-paused the game, and lucky for me the camera angle had been at that sweet spot where Solas was walking by it. So I had a face to painting reference. And I became even more suspicious of my lover. Even the fact that Solas knew so much about the orb was just too damn convenient. I figured he had come back to help the elves, since Dragon age has been hinting at his return since origins ( I'm a codex lover sorry XD ) I just didn't know what his plan was or if I was even correct in assume he was in fact the dread wolf. The whole time I was thinking and sorta hoping that he was a red herring. Anyhoo, I setup my Dragon age playthroughs to help him get all those sweet resources in hope I could join him. BUT NO!! He just took my shit and left me by myself.
    I apologize if my comment is all over the place. But talking about dragon age is like a nerd trigger for me. I can never contain myself.

    Sigh just as I thought I have finally crawled out of the Solavellan hell I stumble over this video which spurs a complete relapse into oblivion. Already watched it twice because I like your insights. I must say that the way Solas is as a character and his voice actor just made me fall head over heels for him. His backstory, motivation, voice cadence, the lingering sadness and regrets are all very real and touching but it is topped off for me by his tombstone in the Fade where his biggest fear was to die alone. I just pray to all that is holy and the Maker that in DA4 we can somehow redeem him and there is more there for my female Lavellan...I mean I romance him like 3/4 of my playthroughs...(the one exception is Cullen when I really need a "and they lived happily ever after" fix after Solas crushes me yet again.

    My personal little theory is that no matter what his opinion of you, he found something good in modern people of Thedas and that makes him doubt the thing he is about to do, but the guilt and all other bad feelings push him to continue with the plan, though deep inside he wishes that we would stop him. That might be the other reason why he kept Inquisitor alive, even if they didn't get along. And if you are his friend or lover he says something like "I would cherish the chance to be wrong again" or smth, so there's that.
    My personal cannon would be if my Lavellan could convince him to drop his plan, help him work through all his emotional baggage and then start making up for his mistakes and fixing stuff, because I personally feel like dwelling on the past is a sad and silly way to live when you can start looking forward and building new future, but that's just me :)

    Solas is by far the most interesting character for me in DA:I. Hoping to learn more about his origins in DA4
    My current theory regarding his backstory is:
    - The elf we know as Solas was originally a young dalish elf that voluntarily or involuntarily left his clan before he got his vallaslin... (like Minaeve in Haven who was also given a backpack and sent away into the woods because their clan had too many mages.... would also explain why Solas has a very low opinion of dalish elves when you bring up the subject with him as a elven inquisitor)
    - This young elf was no ordinary elven mage, but a dreamer (like Feynriel from DA2) and he taught himself about the world & magic by travelling the fade (would explain why Solas has a lot of spirit friends)
    - The young elf came across Fen’Harel whilst in the fade & they became bound together (much like Sigrid Guldsdotten & her spirit from the Jaws of Hakkon expansion)
    - This duo, a young elven dreamer bound to the spirit of Fen’Harel, would become known as Solas & would eventually set out to tear down the veil that Fen’Harel helped create in ages past
    - Fen’Harel provided Solas with the knowledge to acquire his orb, a “somnaborium- vessel of dreams”, to provide the power needed to bring down the veil, however as Solas did not actually have the power of Fen’Harel due to the fact he was only guided by him, this is why he gave it to Corypheus to unlock, and thus starts the events of DA:I
    A similar kind of character is Flemeth / Mythal, Flemeth is Flemeth but she is also bound to Mythal who is an intrinsic part of her

    My probably favorite dialogue party banter is with Solas and Varric. Solas claims the Dwarves are part of a severed arm i.e (arm of a titan or apart of one we assume) and cannot dream or cast magic, is sad that they lost the deep roads, and tells the story of the fisherman who lost everything his wife,his people,his friends, but is content with catching fish drinking fermented juice, lol also wine, and looking at the stars and says why would anyone be pleased with doing nothing when they have lost so much. Varric says that Solas thinks that the fisherman gave up but he sees it as he strove on, while alone he had the will to get up everyday after losing everything he caught fish to feed himself, found pleasure in wine, and looked at the stars at night probably to reflect on the past but live in the present, and that he chose to live in the now instead of letting the past rule him and that's the best way to get back at life when it takes everything from you. Just imo more evidence that he is not an endgame villain even with options and that he can seek wisdom from the friend he has met in the inq.

    I like it when people take the time to analyze the egg head's character, I feel that most just take the black and white approach to him. Yes what he plans to do is without a doubt evil and there is arrogance in him, but there is more to him...at least what we know so far. Note that even with negative approval that selecting one the dialogue will get him to say it's not your fault that you are the way you are so perhaps he blames himself for all races' current state of existence besides the tranquil bit anyway. Going back on the fall of the Dales however while it is true that the actions original rather inaction of the elves in the second Blight led to Orlais and many other growing human nations to become increasingly hostile to the Elven empire it was the Emerald Knights that were the actual match that started the flame for their conquest and the Exalted March. The Emerald Knights had attacked a human village nearby because they suspected one of their own was going to give up their secrets because he planned to become an Andrastian all so that he could be with a human woman. This was more or less propagated by the individual in question own sister who killed his lover and the rest of the village which inadvertently got him killed too .

    Amazing video! There are so many facets to this character and you managed to touch on every one of them :)
    Though I kinda have to disagree about the End of the Dales, the Dalish Kingdom had reasons for not helping Orlais during the Second Blight. They became more isolationistic during the years because the Chantry (which is deeply affiliated with the Empire of Orlais) sent many missionaries to convert them to Andrastianism. After all, the Maker can only come if all people of Thedas sing the Chant. And there have been skirmishes on their borders, even before the Blight; it's unfortunate that Red Crossing was the Catalyst that brought all the boiling animosities forth...
    While not helping Orlais is still a controversial choice, I think it's also important to try to understand why exactly a whole kingdom of people are isolating themselves from the rest of the known world.
    And because the vilification of Fen'Harel only began in the Towers Age after the Destruction of the Dales, Solas maybe would have understood them too imo.
    (Also, Orlais occupied Nevarra during the Third Blight & they only regained their independence 30 years later, showing how opportunistic they can be... )

    Honestly, I totally understand what Solas wants to do and why and I can't even find a logical or rational reason to dissagree with him.
    I think his only fault is his impatience. He woke up and saw the world in ruins, everybody is now mortal so they've all got a death sentence anyway, everyone is cut off from the fade which is wholly unnatural and spirits are corrupted into demons daily. The veil itself is entirely unnatural and the cause of pretty much all the chaos in the world. And Solas did it. He destroyed the world, everything we've seen in the dragon age games: it's all broken. We are seeing a world that's torn apart. Solas wants to fix it.
    Yes, that will cause immediate destruction and chaos but only in the short term. I completely see why Solas cannot care about the short term. 100 years is nothing to an immortal: in 100 years every being in Thedas will be dead anyway (because of him). To save the world, to bring it back to it's natural state and undo the destruction he caused, sacrificing many of those people now in order to bring lasting peace and restore the world forever after would seem like no price at all.
    It is, after all, nothing compared to what he already did in creating the veil in the first place, which not only destroyed the world at the time but kept it trapped in this state forever or until he undoes it.
    So, I can't actually dissagree with Solas. However, he is not pressed for time like he was when he created the veil: there is no imminent threat that means he must act right now or all will be lost. Everybody has adapted to the veil, he can take as long as he likes to find a way to fix it AND mitigate the ensuing damage. I feel like the only reason he's all like 'I have to do this asap' is because it's so fresh for him, he woke up, saw what he'd done and was consumed by guilt and panic. He's rushing to fix his mistake because to him it feels like he only just destroyed the world, but it's been destroyed for centuries upon centuries; fixing it right now won't be any different to fixing it later but for Solas he can't see past his emotions at the moment.

      Sheechiibii Fox He has one of the best character arcs in the entire game. The fact that he is so cold towards killing millions of people because of his inability to be patient and act rationally makes me unsympathetic towards his inner struggle and his attitude toward the current population. He views the elves of the current games as flawed and he cares for their lives just as much as the other races, which is no care whatsoever. While good intentions are noble, nothing can justify genocide.
      DA:I had a heavy emphasis on faith and how it drives people forward, Solas wants to destroy that faith because he knows it to be wrong and so do you. But one of the characters in skyhold( I forgot who it was) says to you after you return from the fade to never speak of the events and that andreste never did bless you.
      In short, he is full of faults caused by noble intentions and monstrous goals and aspirations and methods.
      I may be a bit biased on the fact that I dislike Solas and my compassion for all sentient life drives me to save as many people as possible because it breeds hope as the world crumbles around them. I will always oppose the idea of genocide and being so caught up in the past, you can't pull your head out of your ass to look toward the future.

    • @Sheechiibii
      @Sheechiibii 6 лет назад +2

      EmeraldClips -MajorFailGaming- Well I'm not on his side as far as the death count is concerned either, that's what I meant when I said if he wasn't so impatient I'd be on his side.
      I can't fault him rationally or logically for the reasons I gave. But emotionally I can fault him because just like you (and ironically Solas too) I don't want to see a genocide.
      From Solas' perspective though, that of an immortal, I can see why he can put rationality and logic above the emotional argument. He broke the world and he wants to fix it.
      I don't think his attitude towards the modern elves was hate for them or uncaring. It's because he put them in the state they're in that he's so angry about it. Same with everyone else, if he didn't care he wouldn't want to remove the veil.
      If you thought you'd made everyone tranquil (which is how it appeared to him) would you not want to fix it? Would you not hate what you'd done? Solas is looking to the future: he wants the future to include a world not torn by the veil.

    • @KnickKnackNic
      @KnickKnackNic 6 лет назад +5

      Sheechiibii Fox But what gives Solas the right to take away what is already here? The logical path is to improve the current iteration of Elves to be equals with the other races. If he is an immortal being he can easily wait and work up the current state of elves because he is immortal. Since he helped save the world he could be the beacon of hope or a leader the Elves need. But due to his impatience he needs to fix everything as soon as he possible even if it cost a genocide.
      Solas is way to stuck in his past mistakes and undoing the wrong he can't see any other path. He has been possessed by grief and anguish over the Elves disparity he has the idea that the new world is faulty and that it shouldn't exist, completely disregarding it. So no, rebuilding a future by destroying the future for everyone so he can recreate the past is a faulty rational look at the situation.
      And what is truly tragic is that he essentially caused DA:I and after he undid his mistake there, he cast away everyone he cared about. The only time it has any emotional weight if you romanced him. Other wise, he erases Cole's memories, he could cut off your arm, and causes the events of the Trespasser dlc in the first place.
      Yes if I made everyone tranquil it would pain me, but killing a soul isn't healing it. Not everything should be burned down and built anew. Solas needed to be reasoned with and since he couldn't accept any suggestion or help, he deserves to be stopped. And how much chaos he causes will determine his end.
      I play as an Elf every time, but I can never bring myself to support Solas and tend to bring the show the world that and Elf can accomplish things and deserve to be equal. And the fact that Elves leave the Inquisition to try and be superior to the human population and joining Solas, breaks my female Elf's heart.
      (If you like Solas, you will hate my preferred romance companion)

    • @Sheechiibii
      @Sheechiibii 6 лет назад +1

      EmeraldClips -MajorFailGaming- See, I didn't initially romance him but I still understood where he was coming from even without that extra perspective.
      I totally agree with you really, he needs to be stopped because his impatience will cause destruction that maybe could be avoided.
      Why does he have the right though? Well because he created the veil, it's his actions that put the world in the condition that it's in, his power and responsibility.
      How is wanting to fix the world not looking to the future? If the fade were water in our world and you created a veil that cut most of it off, wouldn't it be your responsibility to help try and return the world to it's natural state? I'm just saying I get why he us the way he is, even if I want to change his mind on being so impatient with it.

    As always, great video. But answer me this, please. What do you think about a theory that Solas did not actually kill Felassan, but rather made him tranquil? Because I really like it. Here's the deal. In the ending pages of The Masked Empire, Felassan enters a dream, kinda like Inquisitor did with the help if Solas. And it was there, not in the physical world, that Solas killed him. And in DA2 keeper Marethari mentions that dying in a sleep like that results in tranquility. There are two reasons I think Solas could've done that. First, Felassan was a friend and Solas maybe didn't want to take his life, but rather made him harmless, so Felassan wouldn't seek revenge. Or, and I think that reason's more probable, Solas didn't actually know that killing him in the Fade would result in Tranquility. After all, Solas seems to believe that he's possesed so much knowledge that he rarely is wrong. His name means Pride, after all.

    • @Fr0st1989
      @Fr0st1989 7 лет назад +14

      Pretty sure Solas does tell the player in Trespasser that he did kill Felassan
      you're also forgetting Solas hates the idea of the Tranquil, believing it to be a fate worse than death

    • @GhilDirthalen
      @GhilDirthalen  7 лет назад +28

      Oh man I have heard this theory before and I HOPEHOPEHOPEHOPE that the theory is true, because Felassan is great. It would make sense, basically for the reasons you described. My only problem with it, is that now you have this dude who knows a lot about Solas just floating out in the world, Tranquil and probably pissed that he hurt him. Tranquility can be cured, and I wouldn't be surprised if Solas already knew that. So unless Solas picked up Felassan, and he's just chilling at his base, or went out and actually killed him, Felassan could be a major loose end- which seems super sloppy of the Dread Wolf who trapped super powerful mage-gods.
      That being said- Felassan for romanceable companion 2k19: The Solas-like romance that doesn't end with him leaving you.

      JustMike It is possible because Solas does not see the people of present Thedas as actual people(unless he is romanced). A lack of connection to the fade seems to be the same as being dead in his eyes.

    I have some mixed feelings on the idea that Solas was a spirit of wisdom once-- I think it's probably true, but remarkably ironic. Also, the nuance between wisdom and pride is a lot closer than one might imagine. In DAO, when visiting the Dalish elves, the poet-tree tells you the reason Sylvanwoods attack is because the spirits took on a shape that confused them. No eyes, no mouth, the like. My own personal theory on Solas's backstory was that he was a Spirit of Pride/Wisdom that took a body (at Mythal's request-- I'll get into it later), and as a result, his nature changed because he was susceptible to influence by his body chemistry. Endorphins, self-preservation instinct, hormones, etc. So instead of being an impartial, 3rd-party, unbiased wisdom spirit, his body tempered him into something more like Pride. This is evidenced by Solas's comments on him being hotblooded as a youth, and not being into gambling "anymore". Essentially, flexing on all them kids with his knowledge sounds a bit prideful, don't you think?
    This ties into a little bit of my own personal headcannon around his name. In an interview with Weeks, I think the same one you mentioned in this video, he notes that the literal meaning of Solas's name is actually "One who stands tall", which can be interpreted as pride but not necessarily. I bring this up because I have another headcannon--this one a little more tinfoil than my others--that Solas was brought into being at Mythal's request to be a General at war, but with her vallaslin on him. When he eventually broke away from Mythal to become the Dread Wolf, he "burned her off his face" (took the vallaslin away), and rose up as a leader of the slave rebellion. I believe that more than just "pride", "one who stands tall" more represents his desire to stand up for the disenfranchised, rather than something more akin to plain arrogance.

      After listening to a few of her videos, I've started to think that maybe elves are the descendants of spirits that took on a physical form and that mythal, and others, led the way. After the veil was created the remaining elves lost their magic because they were separated from the fade, similar to the origin of the aldmer in the elder scrolls.

I dont see Solas as some evil villain but as a man trying to restore his people to greatness and to return the world to how it should be(without the veil). I really do hope that in DA4 you can support Solas in bringing down the veil not only to restore the evlen people but also to seek the answers that would lie within doing so. Also the world without the veil truly seems like something marvelous if you talk to Solas about it. Imagination being able to shape reality and having spirts live amongst the people, and elves having their immortality once again. I hope in the next dragon age you can try to help Solas out but also try to limit the damage done to the people of world.

      because killing all of the other people and cultures in Thedas, who weren't even in existence during the fall of Arlathan and in no way responsible, is such a noble and honourable goal.

    • @Sheechiibii
      @Sheechiibii 6 лет назад +5

      vats1955 All those cultures only exist based on lies and ignorance of the fact they're living in a broken world that's torn apart and chaotic. Every culture struggles because of the veil, all the people in Thedas and all the spirits in the fade are suffering because they're living in a destroyed world. Heck, people's mortality itself - death - is due to the veil.
      Why shouldn't those cultures end and new ones be allowed to grow in a Thedas that's whole instead of broken? In a healed and fully functioning world, rather than the wreck we see in the DA games.
      What's the issue? There will be a lot of deaths? In 100 years every being in Thedas would be dead any way - because of Solas' veil. Without it some people die now but the world is healed. Can you really say it's evil to think of long term prosperity over short term breathing (most people in Thedas aren't really 'living' in the state it's in)?
      How many people die every day in Thedas, or worse? How many spirits become demons? Seeing that continue - forever - just because short term it would be chaotic to fix isn't all that morally superior really.

    • @vats1955
      @vats1955 6 лет назад +11

      "Most people in Thedas aren't really living"
      Are you serious? You think that if you asked some farmer he would prefer death for a noble cause because he and his family aren't "really living" anyway? And what makes you so sure that the culture of the Ancient Elves and Evanuris provided a superior way of living? By Solas's own admission, they constantly warred against each-other, branded the faces of their own kin and turned them into slaves and some of them (Falon Din) required oceans of blood to be appeased. Status back then was determined by the extent of your magical power.
      Honestly, your whole rhetoric sounds really familiar; the sacrifice of millions is justified to build a better, more "pure" world. And we don't even need to ask the guys living in the world now, they're sure to be fine with the fact that everything they know and love and their entire culture will be destroyed. An acceptable sacrifice for the greater good.
      Fuck that shit. You think wiping out people and cultures is acceptable because life is full of problems with the Veil? Guess what, there were problems pre-veil too. And for someone who allegedly values free thinking, Solas is incredibly quick to just disregard any kind of say the common people of this world might have.

    • @Sheechiibii
      @Sheechiibii 6 лет назад +2

      vats1955 I didn't say anything about cultures before the veil. Culture isn't the point. The point is the world is destroyed, and everybody is going to die and suffer forever because of it. That's the facts about the destroyed world.
      In 100 years time that farmer will be dead and so will all his children, not like you're suggesting he be saved or his life made better or more protected. He can't be because the veil brought mortality and death to the world. It causes spirits to constantly become demons and magic to be severed from all but a few people causing war and slavery all the time everywhere.
      You're saying you don't want him or others to die but you have no suggestion to save him or his family or anyone. Not in the Thedas that is torn apart by the veil. Where will your farmer be in 100, 200 years? Dead. Same as mine. Where will his children be if the veil is still there? All dead, and their children too, if they didn't suffer a worse fate to demons. With the veil gone and the world no longer torn apart and magic everywhere, in 100, 200 years their descendants will have lives in a world that's not literally destroyed.
      You're acting like I want hordes of people to die. But it's the world you think should continue as it is - destroyed - that causes the death and horrors we see in the first place. They all die in the future you'd pick so don't act like you're trying to avoid them dying cause that's not possible. Immortality only exists in the world when it's not torn apart by the veil.
      It's not like I wouldn't prefer a less destructive way to restore the world to it's natural state, all I'm saying is that goal is not evil or even really immoral. Especially from the pov of an immortal.

    so what was solas doing in between taking on a body and becoming a rebel leader? there are mosaics of him in temples that revere him alongside the other evanuris, so does that mean he was, at a time, of equal status to them? did mythal place him among them as a spy of sorts, or was he genuinely their good friend and ally until he became disillusioned with their empire and decided it needed to be broken down and rebuilt? solas was obviously their enemy at one point, since they were putting out propaganda against him, but then that doesn't make sense as to why temples from the empire's time have him portrayed along with them in holy places. i once read a theory that he was both: he acted as their friend while being a spy, but two-timed them by also being a "masked vigilante", if you will. i guess it would explain the whole story about him walking among both the evanuris and forgotten ones.

    I love your videos. your so concise and smooth with how you dish out information and theories.
    I am Terrified and excited for DA4. I don't think Solas exactly has the power he needs yet. he's waiting and biding his strength and I am terrified that he may end up wanting to use Fenris. we can assume he knows of Fenris and his Lyrium and while it might take a bit of work, Solas could manipulate Fenris easily "I can remove your markings" (and take them for my own) I have an awful sneaking suspicion the DA4 protag might have to fight Fenris or other Lyrium enhanced Elves. I mean. if Solas brings back Magic for all the elves just think of the power Fenris would have. and how much use he could be to Solas.
    i imagine a side quest where a village has been wiped out because Fenris accidentally destroyed with a wave of his hand. I do truly feel it will all connect. Fenris and his markings. the Qunari Mage, enhanced by lyrium, boss battle in Trespasser. something is going to happen.
