  • This is a segment from the Rescue Swimmer Mindset Podcast. Vince sat down with an active duty PJ (who was also a USCG Helicopter Rescue Swimmer) to learn about his journey through both military pipelines.

Can you give me some pointers on injury prevention and healing injuries. I’m preparing for going to the guard in hopes of becoming a PJ. I would like to sign January and I know there is some sort of interview process. I’ve been running, swimming, rucking, gym, sandbag workouts, etc. right now I got killer shin splints that are taking a longer time to heal than I wanted. Also I sprained my AC joint on my left shoulder and that’s also taking a minute to heal. I truly need pointers on how to prevent and heal injuries when your training rigorously for joining special operations. Thank you

      - properly warm up before every workout. Jumping jacks, toe touches, arm circles, swimmers. Don't stretch, do dynamic stretches.
      - hydrate. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Before, during, and after training.
      - stretch after every training session. This serves as a cooldown period. Stretch the shoulders, legs, wrists, neck.
      - recover as well as you're training. You're getting injured, because you're not recovering as much as you should. Have good nutrition. Give your body good protein such as peanut butter. Eat more fruits and greens.
      - sleep well. Get 7+ hrs of sleep everynight. Go to bed early and wake up early. Any less than that and your minimizing recovery periods, meaning higher chance to get injured.
This is all from Iron Wolf. You can find his recovery and training on youtube.
Stay focused. Best wishes to you.

Big key for getting rid of shin splints completely is doing tibialis raises as part of your workout

@@Iamheresometimes you should look it up, but a big part is that selection is more character based than kicking you out for being 2 push-ups short during a fitness test. It's still got the same attrition rate and it's really hard, but they want to make sure they are not taking on people who will be bad teammates even if they can make it through training.
Its also more focused on doing the things you have to do on the job, like rucks and carries.
There are other differences but that's a big principle behind it
