      No one has the power to take away our happiness, as it is our eternal inheritance, however, while dreaming we can seem to give them that power only because in our forgetting we can assign the fault to someone or something outside ourselves thus maintaining our innocence and making them the reason for our unhappiness rather then our choice to forget our reality. However, we can change our mind, as you have decided to do.
      "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent", Eleanor Roosevelt. You can substitute many different words for Inferior.

    Pretty sage advice. I get upset about corrupt mayors that steal money from decent people. But, that's a bit silly since they all do. Then there's the war(s), famine, global warming, upcoming election, etc.. I wrote "let them" on a piece of paper and stuck it on my fridge. Going to work on it because it's exhausting and doesn't do any good. Thanks for another great vid.

    I think you should do more videos like this....for those of us who are preparing to or already retired- wanting to live off grid- and doing it alone can sometimes feel lonely and isolating....I think sometimes as a loner myself we feel misunderstood- like we don't have much in common with most people...and we can't relate to many things they fill their lives with or things they find important- UGH, for me, I find many people exhausting and ignorant.....as a loner and introvert I do recognize the wonderful aspects of my free life....wouldn't trade it....but I am also painfully aware of the patterns of my "OFF" days....when I feel unhappy....and ruminate about things....the days when I find it harder to connect with my inner peace and happiness- I am a work in progress- choosing happiness....we do not have to be miserable as you say! I am in Tucson, trying to retire early on a shoestring....waiting for the right rural property to come up for sale in Apache County....something with some sort of small living structure in place that borders state land so I can hike with my doggies....as long as it has good bones and no water damage I can fix most things....You have a very soothing voice....and are inspiring....keep doing what you are doing....and if you run out of video ideas I think you should try making some deep insightful videos like this one...to inspire those of us that are struggling with the loner lifestyle....feeling like a little bit of a misfit sometimes....and struggling with insecurity...and negative emotions....but I will overcome- just like you....I want something similar to what you have....for me, that is the key to happiness....I've done the city thing....I'm ready for something different- thanks for the inspiring video!!

    Thank you for this. I'm certainly not the expert on the subject that you are, Mike, but it always seemed to me that both the Stoics and Taoists had similar views on this. I find it very interesting that wise people from different cultures, times and places in the world with no contact could come to so many similar conclusions. Ancient wisdom is a very fascinating subject.

    Needed advice, currently reading The Book of Joy with the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu, it has been an amazing reminder about how to cultivate joy and contentment in any circumstance. They talk of not only the Dalai Lama’s exile from Tibet but also Buddhist monks spending multiple decades in Chinese Gulag’s, the 26 year imprisonment of Mandela -all while maintaining their humanity and compassion. Thank you, as always for sharing your wonderful insights with us.

    "In simplest form, it can be said attack is a response to function unfulfilled as you perceive the function. ²It can be in you or someone else, but where it is perceived it will be there it is attacked."
    "When you are angry, is it not because someone has failed to fill the function you allotted him? ²And does not this become the “reason” your attack is justified?"
    The world we see and experience is a projection of our inner world. Change our inner world and the experience changes. "Projection makes perception." It is always a choice and is, in reality, the only real choice we have here in this seeming world. "I could see peace instead of this." The quickest way to peace is to relinquish all judgments.
    "And just like a little stream
    meandering through mossy crevices
    I, too, have become hushed and utterly clear"

    I have a property in a rural remote setting, but I have a couple of neighbors. How can I make my property more private and more hermitlike?

    • @wildernesshermit
      @wildernesshermit  6 месяцев назад

      Good question Joni, it's tricky. Over the years more people are moving into the area where we live. We now have 2 close by neighbors, 1 rarely seen and one full time along with a community-commercial well about 100 yards from our place. We're fortunate to be surrounded by trees which helps the visual aspect of privacy. I've simply adjusted my expectations of wilderness solitude to accommodate the reality of life events. I've gotten to know the full time neighbor in passing, a pleasant guy, and so when I see or hear him I say to myself, "Oh there goes Mike.'' and don't give it any further thought.

      I really admire your attitude. Some people (music guy) just can't handle quiet. To inflict your noise onto others, though, is selfish and moronic. John Cleese once said there's no cure for stupid and I think he falls into this category.
