I'm the percussionist in gaudy hawaiian shirt! This was the highlight of my time at UNT. I became a huge fan of Zappa after stumbling on a clip of Ruth Underwood playing Rollo Interior on tv when i was 12 so I was thrilled to have the opurtunity to play in this group. I thoroughly enjoy reading the (mostly) positive comments on here so thank you all! What some might not realize is we only had 2 rehearsals as a full band before this show
Ignore anything negative here. Those are from whom Frank would label "people writing about music who know nothing about it".
outstanding...2 rehearsals.. Frank would drill his lineups months before going on the road ...y'all did amazingly well. I can't believe I missed this.. I live here! nevertheless, you did great sir, along with this group of fine musicians.
Thank you!!!
I saw Zappa 3 times in Austin in the 80s. I really enjoyed this performance.
You did a great job. Zappa really gives you a work out. And it looks like you all enjoyed it thoroughly.
Screw the negative comments. I saw FZ live and he would love what you are doing. I'm a life long FZ fan. You are doing a great thing with fine, complex music. I salute you for your performance and your obvious joy in FZ's music. Salute to you people.
Frank Zappa would've been very proud of this wonderful performance!
Thanks! I agree.
@@arthurbarrow2847 ARTHUR OH MY GOD THESE PLAYERS AND YOU SIR IF YOU DO COME BACK TO TEXAS WILL YOU TELL ME SO I CAN SOMEHOW COME ? TO ALL WHO PLAYED THIS NIGHT IM CRYING....
Tremendous! Such musicianship and attention to style. Thank you for posting this!
What a tribute to Frank. He would be proud!!!
Frank would have said :
"Gail, please give some coffee to this excellent fine musicians".
What an illuminating way to start my day. It makes even this "horribly fore shortened glass of orange juice", sound pleasing!!!
Still one of my favorite moments as a student at UNT. (I'm on drumset). Thank You Dr. Klein!
Some great memories, John... and thanks for your excellent contribution!
Great drumming
Not that I was hoping for it, but, I was certain a young drummer could not make it through an hour of Frank without a hiccup. It is wonderful to be wrong sometimes. John, you let it rip beautifully. Masterful performance. Just ran into this two days ago and it gets better with each viewing. Thanks.
Very cool, Great job!!!
You slayed it. Great job!
FZ said Arthur was the best bass player he ever had. His playing on Shut up n Play Yer Guitar is glorious. And this so good to see him out playing FZ music with the another generation of music lovers. Positive vibrations...!
Hearing a big band or orchestra play Zappa's music seems to expose the musical genius even more. I don't know.
I got chills going from Black Page to Sofa. Sometimes it's just so beautiful, I'm moved to tears.
Me too.
This comment wont matter.... But I actually cried when they played Sharleena ! This is amazing.... I don´t knoe ehy the fuck I am in tears right now...... Zappas music touches me like nothing else.....God damn it....!
It matters to me! I get pretty emotional about Sharleena, Sofa, and a lot of others. That means it's good music and is touching you in a way that only music can, and is doing its job!
Me too. How humiliating, but in a good way.
I wept and blew my nose throughout this amazing performance. I saw Zappa in 1974 when I was 17 years old at a medium small round theater in Phoenix. I got tickets 2 hours after they went on sale and got 2nd row. I sat in awe, but now at 67 I just cried as the melodies and amazing riffs flew through my soul. Thank you to all of these fine young performers!!!
Damn it brings tears to my eyes to see a project like this in 2015!!
It brings tears to my old eyes watching this in 2024.
This is where it all begins. Teachers, students, great compositions, and supporting artists; all striving to learn, understand, perform, and enjoy great music. Unless you're born a genius, which is so extremely rare, this is how it's done. And, they chose one of the most challenging of composers to grind, hone, and polish their craft. Every one of those young men and women deserve a great token of appreciation from all of us who love great music. Parents, teachers, and Frank himself can not be proud enough. The only thing that was missing, was a forceful conductor to inject that depth that Frank was so well known for........... I hope the year since this was done, found you all happily continuing in a great tradition of unparalleled passion and enjoyment of this profound art form....... Never be afraid to do Broadway the Hard Way.......
I can only imagine how proud their parents must be,,,God Bless these kids
Thank God our youth is not totally lost. I could kiss everyone of these musician’s parents right on the lips! Thank EVERYONE so much for the elation I have received tonight. Oh and the guitar solo at around minute 46, Zappa is applauding “where ever you may be.”
Arthur unleashed the special ingredients of what makes a Zappa band go, and these cats poured it out here. Brilliant, superb.
Dude playing the xylophone absolutely nailed Peaches. Great stuff.
Brilliance, Arthur Barrow and his members. Great performace
Not a lot of bands could pull off this music. To quote Frank himself, "This one's hard to play!
Wow, all I can say is, after being a Zappa fan for decades, this is a great performance of his works. Kudos to all the musicians, Arthur and the director of the College Rhythm Band, Joseph Klein! To see young people not only playing this unique composer's music, but obviously getting off on playing it has restored my hope in the human race today. Bravo!
Agree impressive ....
they are quite good ..
but if you want to see best most zen covers of zappa go to "Voice of Cheez"..
yup!
This is wonderful. Makes me very happy to hear the music passed down this way. Thanks to Arthur Barrow.
I'm 70 yr Zappa freak, love that you bunch of friends, musicians, keep the music alive, it's unique, think have watched this before, my gal nearly got called Charlene, Sharlene, ?!?! Keep up the brilliant work people, love this along everywhere, ..... Remember Frank and his audacity, capability, virtuosity, and everything else,
Its great to hear that Frank's music is appreciated by young people and brought on the stage at such an outstanding level. Wonderful!
End-to-End, what an incredible group of musicians, thus I say End-to-End. Also thank you for the dignitaries that fought for the funds and put together the talent to bring so many poets to the stage. Without EVERYONE there could only be void.
Fantastic! I just wish the camera had spent more time on the amazing percussion section because that is (to me) the foundation of Frank's best compositions.
As a 50 year Zapp fan, this is OUTFUCKINGSTANDING! Thank you.
This is very complex music really great musicians !
chunga's revenge, this tune takes me back to the 70s in my room in high school writing my term paper using encyclopedias
Wow, I would have really loved to have played in this band! Things really come full circle for this HS band member and FZ fan in the early 80s. Like some others who commented, I got a bit teary-eyed listening and watching this. It reminded me of band life and the joy of FZ's music. Bravo!
A veritable tour de force - really enjoying this. I don't know how they did it with so little rehearsal time! Great play list! Hard stuff! Gets better & better!
It’s wonderful to hear these kids who weren’t born when Frank died playing this music. Maybe there’s hope.
I'm very honored to have been in bands (separate ones) with both guitarists. Amazing musicians, and great people too. Was sitting somewhere up front smiling ear to ear through this whole show because everyone on stage did an incredible job.
Brilliant choice of songs, completely forgot just how fantastic they were. Well done guys, you did justice to them all ✌️
Excellent! I hope history records this tribute to a talent and a era that probably will never be duplicated.
All the performers here should be well proud of what they accomplished.
That was the best 57:37min. I spent in 2016 so far. The Montana solo and the far right blonde singer always bopping to the music made my day. Congrats M. Barrow and all of the students/musicians. Most excellent job.
Plus she took on Ricky Lancelotti's falsetto at the end of Montana; I held my breath
Great stuff. Love that the guitarist shreds like Frank.
Always warms my heart to see universities embrace FZ's music. I think it becomes especially more important, as we can digitally enhance sounds real-time, that we get to hear real music, real-time, with warts and all.
What an outstanding group of talent.
Sooooooo damned good! Who knew Zappa would be so alive still, his music is timeless.
I really want to thank you guys for this precious gift you gave us. I literally have tears in my eyes watching you play this immortal music. Thank you so much. Besides, Arthur, you and Vinnie really changed my life.
Wow This was awesome!!!
Bravo! Very impressive all around, and great to see young people making good choices of repertoire. Ich bin der chrome dinette indeed.
thanks! the repertoire selection was all mine! so thank again!
Very well done!
Little house is practically perfect
Wow, I didn't expect that ! Amazing selections done amazingly well. Sharleena has always pulled the heart strings and they nailed it. Bravo !!!
Wonderful! The Next Generational Wave of Zappa Fans...and True Music Lovers! Great Initiative Arthur! Bravo!
Arhur kindly teaching the new genaration the Word of Zappa's music. Beatiful!!!
Excellent ! ! ! Pur bonheur, pure happiness. Powerfull and exact ! Bravo
Very, very good! Long live Frank Zappa's and those that play it well!
As a 40 year fan of Frank, and a musician of just as many years, I whole heartedly salute this group of students for investing in the work it takes to learn and perform correctly Frank's music. Y'all rock!
Must be a younger pup than me first saw him 75
Frank’s music still lives. I would give anything to be in a big band playing his stuff
Great choice of songs! Great arrangements! I would honestly show this video to someone to give them the idea of what Zappa was about musically, rather than some of his own original performances. You've made Zappa more accessible and palatable with this show. Most people need to be introduced gradually, and this is an amazingly good stepping stone. Also hats off to the sound engineers. I hope you all managed to stay in music in some capacity. Best of luck.
Just awesome, guys. You blew my mind. Big Zappa fan here.
great, great performance and awesome tracklist
Zappa's universe expanding, a beautiful thing.
That the musicianship is so thrilling is at times almost easy to miss because you are constantly swept up by the joy on the ensemble's faces, communicating that they are experiencing one of the great experiences of their lives - and enormously to the benefit of all who get to feast on the this beautifully produced recording of this singular performance.. W O N D E R F U L . Thank you all so very much.
Good point Sir... well spoken!
Brilliant performance. Enjoyed every minute.
Really nice to see the next generation performing some of Franks classics!
Stellar arrangements, superbly executed.
Dentonites ...a proud heritage special kudos to the trumpet player on the black Page pt 2
Simultaneously a great performance, and yet beneath the original enough to make you appreciate just how difficult this music is to play. What an accomplishment.
That was great. And you really hit Sharleena. That's such beautiful song. Wonderful black page. Wonderful dynamics. Great singing and playing. Montana intro spot on and wonderful guitar solo. Well rehearsed 🙂Thank you. That made me happy.
I'm from Argentina and a big fan of Zappa works. You must be proud for such a composer you gave to the World
challenging charts cudos to the students for attempting these songs. Anything to keep Franks music alive is ok by me.
Thanks Arthur, he applauds from up there.
I am immediately struck by how orchestral these arrangements are ❤
Loved this. Zappa is truly a genius. I first heard his music in Vietnam as The Mothers of Invention and Rubin and the Jets. I’ve followed his growth as the most influential composer of our generation. UNT experimentalist jazz program is a credit to his stature. Arthur Burrows. Shazam, Dude.
just stumbled upon this - EXCELLENT! Passing the torch - Frank would be pleased! and they're good!
Very well done especially on percussion, hard to play Zappa songs for an hour straight.
Your probably lucky Frank wasn’t around, a major perfectionist. He used to always complain about not getting things absolutely perfect.
Absolutely beautiful! A work of passion and respect. The singing/chorus, in particular, was SENSATIONAL!
And thus you live on, Frank!
Great performance, tastes for more.
As you say in English, I am a fan of Zappa since the seventies and I have his music in the ear. Bravo for your band, it is very good and especially there are only young people. Zappa is the greatest rock composer of the 20th century, and it is not easy to play. Bruxelles
Outstanding! Eyebrows and all.
Arthur is an awesome human being and a fantastic musician. You ever heard Joe's Garage? I mean... those first few bars alone!
heel mooi........very good guys......thats what Frank would love it to hear
You all rule! Thank you for some great music. Zappa hits the spot!
This is so refreshing. Brilliant! Thank You!
Great googlymoogly, Black Page was just groovin.
I've seen Zappa played at UNT a few times. Good to see they're keeping his great music alive. And btw, every song played, some of my Zappa favourites. GREAT! set list. Kudos
Hail yes! This is great - great set list, great arrangements, great playing and performing - everyone just shines! I'm so impressed and just plain delighted.
Wow This makes me so happy to watch and listen to! What an amazing performance by the entire ensemble. It makes my heart warm to see young folks find so much joy in Frank's music. John Sturino is a BEAST on drums! Thank you Arthur for leading this effort!
Thirteen contains parts from Tink Walks Amok. I never madw the connection before. Amazing performance!
Absolutely fantastic to listen to on headphones. Frank would have been proud.
I had this playing in background while working at my desk, had to see who it was, stayed for the duration of the best UNT performance I've ever seen. Fine piano [David Falterman] in Little House. The trumpet [Kole Pantuso] in Village of the Sun, that white guitar flies in Montana, and the girls got the fast parts down pat. And Anna Jalkeus, unbelievably, got the high note at the end. Did I mention the sax solo at 57:36? Much of this performance, particularly the instrumentals, is undistinguishable from Zappa's own. Mega kudos to the audio engineers [Derek Miller and Ermir Bejo] Whenever it pops up on my feed, I consume it once again.
Killer! Arthur Barrow is amazing as are the players in this clip! UNT rocks!
What a wonderful teacher he must be!
Absolutely terrific! That's what I call a university!
Great performance! FZ's music remains interesting. And the band is really good with the complex rythmic, melodic and harmonic structures of the songs!
very impressed good job by all......HUGE ZAPPA FAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Coming from a life long Zappa FREAK, I must say that was incredibly impressive and enjoyable. WELL DONE!!!!!!!!
Killer setlist as well.
but not as magical as "Voice of Cheez"..
if you want to see best most zen covers of zappa go to that..
so they say that to master anything one needs to invest 10.000 hours..wow alot of hours.trombone play killed it
Fantastic! Really well done. So glad to see Zappa's music being appreciated by younger kids. They all seemed to be really into it. Bravo Arthur Barrow.
Youngsters,thank you.
What a TESTAMENT to Zappa as a composer, The undying respect he earned from people who played with him (Thank you, Mr. Barrow!) and the persistence of vision for the teacher, host, arranger, sponsors to have this music brought to such BEAUTIFUL life.... "Music is THE BEST."
The depth, breadth and SOUL of his music is brought to life so well here.
kids listen up! Frank is here to teach indeed!
The great Mr Barrow on Bass, very fine technique from all those young musicians, exquisite arrangements, you've made my day, kudos !
My guess is not a single one of those young folks every heard of Frank Zappa or any of this music but I bet they dig it now! Great job!!
I really can't believe how good this is. They get in the groove. Frank would have loved this. It was never about shake you booty, this is his message. His lyrics were meant to pull you in to what really mattered.
Thank you!
Kudos Arthur and the rest of you guys. FZ is surely smilin'. (NTSU School of Music is my alma mater too!) 🎶
What an amazing performance by everyone! Thanks for bringing the memory of those Zappa songs back to me.
As a huge Zappa fan, I sometimes listen to bands covering his material. Much respect to all of them. But this ranks as one of the very top performances I have seen. Outstanding: 1)I am sure Mr. Barrow brings some magic, 2)for sure the musicianship, but also, how natural it comes from each individual and as an ensemble (many other performances sound stiff) and 3)the energy -a factor that was important to Zappa and that sometimes gets lost when playing the notes: here the energy/tension is incredible. I spent one evening listening to this performance and I truly enjoyed it end-to-end. Bravo to everyone!
