@@GrimGearheart not everyone just sits at home on their time off. People go back country hiking and camping or boating. I myself have had to stay outdoors more than once when that wasn’t the plan. I live about 15 minutes from a wilderness area. To go out there without a way to start a fire is not wise. If you are out there and don’t have a lighter and you need to start a fire, well you might get lucky enough to find an old board washed up and be able to pull the threads on a cotton shirt or sock and fray them up enough that you can start a fire and not freeze to death before someone can get to you.
FYI, Thanks for sharing this somewhat unknown method for getting an ember. It seems like many people are not familiar with it. If using cotton, it must be 100%. You really only need a half of an unrolled ball with about a half teaspoon of WOOD ash. Other fillers work, e.g. Cayenne Pepper, or Rust, or other Natural items. The cotton can be replaced with various other types of Fibers. Your roll was way too huge and you notice it didn't light in the middle like a good roll will, it lit where it wasn't "over-rolled", at the edge. This is one of those skills everyone should know and with practice it will become second nature.
I taught physics and chemistry for 28 years and for the last 10 years before retiring I used our chapters on energy and energy conversion as an excuse to teach every manner of fire starting I could think of without lighters or matches. Of course the first thing we learned was how to gather tinder and actually use matches and lighters correctly. But in addition, we learned all the other primitive methods. Somewhere out there about about 850 young people who have learned the Rudiger Nehberg method demonstrated here as well as rattan fire thong, bamboo friction method, hot spark ferrocerium, real flint with real steel and charcloth, fire bow, using a convex lens and a concave mirror such as a soda can base, battery and steel wool, and of course the most difficult one, the fire plow. Once you know how to gather tinder, its all about creating an ember.
Check out David West. He gets fires started with all manner of things. Tea spoons, water bottles, empty bic, yucca. I haven't come across anyone else that can start a fire in as many different ways as David West.
My dad worked as a prison guard in Korea, in the 1960s. Matches were not allowed for inmates. So, they'd make a rope about 1/4" in diam, with rice straws. They then rolled it between two boards like in the video. When it started to smoke, they broke the rope open, and there would be an ember they used to light cigarettes.
This is a great video, thanks. I’m gonna try this out. I do have a question though. Is there a way to do with without having two pieces of wood plank to rub them between? I may not have that handy.
You don't need perfectly planed flat pieces of timber. Roughly hewn flats made by scraping dried branches with the sharp edge of a rock actually work more reliably. Heck, you can even use flat rocks like pieces of slate, shale, or flagstone.
Thank you for this video. I am 66 years old and have never ever seen anything like this. I learned something new.
Anytime! 👋
Never saw this before. Gonna have to try it out. Thanks for the info.
I've only seen one other person show this and I think it is something that needs to be learned by everyone.
David West ?
Bushcraft Tools is the other person that I've seen do this.
Why in the hell would everyone need to learn this shit?
I learned this one from David West channel. I make mine about 1/6 the size of the one shown in this video and have an ember in less than ten seconds.

that donkey sounds like the violins in the shower scene in Hitchcock's 'Psycho' 😱

I have also seen this before, great way to start a fire, ty for sharing........
Anytime! 👋
Very cool 👍 😃 , iv got bow drill down and I've mastered the bic lighter , lol but this is a new one for me and my boys

That's a new one to me thank you I will have to try it!
"It's physics, y'all."
Good method
Thank You for the information. Stay Safe and God Bless You and your family.
Thanks gonna add this one to the toolbox 🧰!
Do you think old man's beard lichen would work as fibers?
Awesome
Are you planning on doing season 2 on Netflix
This is a great video, thanks. I’m gonna try this out. I do have a question though. Is there a way to do with without having two pieces of wood plank to rub them between? I may not have that handy.

Hey Hawk, that mission was only halfway completed. I didn't see no fire.
"it's physics, y'all"
Rust works as well if you dont have Ash.
Also can used cigarette buts tobacco in lieu of wood ash or rust.
Is the ash just an abrasive agent or something about ash specifically that makes this work?
It is an anrasive and an ember extender.
".............. donkey."
What about adding a minor amount of char to the mix?
COOL WAY
when is the next season coming to netflix???
I make mine about 1/6 the size of this and have an ember in less than 10 seconds.
I always carry flat 2x6 boards in my backpack for fire rolls. Don't you?
Donkey has something to say to you I think
I learn this from David West.
🎉top
yee-haw
Who would have two perfectly planed and flat pieces of timber on hand ?
You don't need perfectly planed flat pieces of timber. Roughly hewn flats made by scraping dried branches with the sharp edge of a rock actually work more reliably. Heck, you can even use flat rocks like pieces of slate, shale, or flagstone.
How about just keeping matches in your fire kit 😅😅😅
The problem is what came first the ash or the fire ??
With enough practiseand experience you can fire roll / Rudiger roll with just natural fibers. It is more difficult though.
Cool but … you need ash from a fire to start the fire , if your needing to start a fire I presume you havnt already had a fire lol
Rasha forever
Has anybody watching this video ACTUALLY MANAGED TO DO IT? I haven't.
Awesome! Hey, can you use beard hair as a substitute for cotton for the fiber material?
Witch craft
Not easy at all
Rust works better than ask
