I came looking for fabric cutting help, as a very frustrated lefty. Your two ruler idea, and showing a left handed perspective, have literally saved my quilt project. THANK YOU!!!
This is the best video for cutting and sub cutting with the 2 ruler method. I can get more accurate cuts doing it this way by not moving fabric!!!! Thank you for showing this
As a complete newbie I get paralyzed when it comes to cutting fabric just like the one you demonstrated for the rectangle. I second guess myself and freeze . Something so simple as 3 1/2 x 5 inch on a long strip confuses me. But your video on just that has turned on a light. I just need an additional ruler…Thank you. You would be surprised how many ppl like me could benefit from your directions! I would like to see , if you don’t have any, a complete tutorial for a window valance .. a standard window … from the very beginning start with calculations to show the windows, the cutting of fabric to sewing. All videos start with the cut pieces…. Don’t worry about video being too long, some of us will be extremely grateful, others with more experience can easily fast forward 😁😁. Once again thank you!!!!
You are an amazing instructor. You are actually teaching with the thought that some of us are actually are beginners and know nothing. So many of the videos presume that we know how hold down a ruler and cut. I organized everything to begin a project and gave up because I could not make clean cuts even though my blade was sharp. I learned what I was doing wrong in your rotary cutting how to video. . Now you showed me how I was cutting incorrectly - when I would get half way up my ruler it would move and I ruined the piece of yardage. But, a more important problem is that I am on blood thinners and could have really sliced my fingers. Thank you
Thank you, I'm a Lefty I very rarely see people showing us how to do things left-handed. I must congratulate you with cutting left-handed when you are right handed well done 😀 Your tips and tricks are very useful thank you for sharing.
I followed this method today for the Sarah block from the women of the Bible quilt. It worked perfectly and much, much more accurate than left to my own devices. Thank you, Vanessa.
As a lefty I have problems with this. Thank you so much for this video. It cleared the confusion as to how to hold and cut my fabric. You are a great teacher. I appreciate you
As a LEFTIE I appreciate this tutorial so much! Thank you for teaching me how to cut correctly! My sister cringed watching me cross my arm over to cut the wrong way! She said it looked dangerous! Well duh! 💡light bulb just turned on!
Your videos are always so clear and concise, really appreciate that! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I'd like to suggest using a cut resistant glove on your ruler holding hand. I've started doing this after a couple close calls with the rotary cutter. Yeah, we always think it's not gonna happen to us, but it can. (check out your fellow RUclipsr Whitney Sews video about this...ouch!) Maybe you could carry some cute gloves in your new shop. Some of them also have grip fingertips to help grip the ruler. Gotta protect those creative hands! :-)
Thank you Vanessa! I have never quilted, but am plucking up the courage to start with my first project. I thoroughly enjoy your inspiring videos, and have watched them all - quilting and others. Off to a well-informed start to my quilting phase. Thank you once again!
This video is really helpful. I just finished your raglan T-shirt class and learned several new techniques. I just signed up for the quilt club and this will be my first experience with quilting. I have both of these rulers but had no idea that they are used together for cutting. Your great tutorials are why I signed up for the club. Excited to get started! I
Great tutorial as usual! After cutting to straighten the edges, rather than flip the fabric over (sometimes it flips unevenly), look at what you trimmed off. If it's two layers, you're good! Another tip relates to you mentioning wasting fabric by trimming too much when squaring it up. In your example, you needed 4 pieces measuring 5" x 5" and 4 pieces measuring 3 1/2" x 5". Typically, you can get 8 cuts of 5" out of a width of fabric cut. So why not cut out the 5" x 5" pieces first (they are the largest) then cut the 3 1/2" x 5" pieces from the remainder. I noticed you cut two 5" strips. If the pattern only needs one cut, you'll save yourself that other strip :)
Wow - that is such a fabulous idea. I could have used this recently because I made my first quilt and it was not as exact as I thought it would be. I have joined your Quilt Club because I need more "training" exposure to work on more quilts. You are a great teacher. Thank you.
Hi Vanessa. Thanks for all of the informative videos. Is there any particular reason you don’t use the measuring lines on the cutting mat? I haven’t had any issues with that method but was wondering about you thoughts.
I do know that she has said in the past that she doesn't trust the lines on the mat because they're not very accurate, that's why she never uses them, also she said that if she could she would have a mat that was completely plain no grid lines on at all. Vanessa did say she would turn the mat over and use the Plain Side if she had one like that. She just uses the rule's nothing more, that was the way she was taught.
Yes, this is very helpful. I am left handed. I would like to see how you handle larger pieces like 10 yards. I need to straighten the edges and cut 2 1/2 yards off. It has been washed and is wrinkled . I find this much yardage overwhelming to work with. I am a newbie.
Excellent tutorial! Thank you, I think I had gotten a bit sloppy in my cutting, BUT I have been doing much better lately, went back to doing what I was taught! LOVE YOUR FABRIC CHOICE! Do you do web orders, minimum cut?
Thank you for sharing this. I just am wondering why you are not using the cutting mat to measure out the long strips? Is it not good to use the grid lines on the cutting mat to line up your long straight edge ruler to cut the strips? I am still learning..
Carla Lissa yes, the fabrics are beautiful! I was by there today and got what I need for our first quilt! I’m so excited and Vanessa is so helpful. This is going to be so much fun. I have learned so much already from these little tips.
Since you're not using a grippy ruler, how do you keep the ruler under your hand from slipping around? I find that even when I am putting firm pressure on it, it slides slightly, leaving me with wonky widths.
I will be working with my granddaughter teaching her to sew this summer. At what age is it ok for a kid to use a rotary cutter? I realize it depends on the kid and not only their age number. So how do you know they are ready?
Hi Vanessa Nice tips . Already sign for the quilt club. Will it be possible to add all these free video in our quilt club so that we all have it directly in our account too? Thanks
Hi I have a question for you. I was sewing with my Serger sewing machine and my needle came out. This happened to me twice. I put the needle back in and then the needle hit the needle plate. was wondering if you can help me figure out what I'm doing wrong.thank you
I'm super new. I get the small square ruler technique but how the heck do I cut for 18" and 12" squares. I just want to make simple bandanas for dif size dogs. Thank
Hola Vanessa!!. Me encantan tus videos. Pero me gustaría que hicieras más en español. Yo sé un poco inglés paro me cuesta mucho seguirte ya que hablas muy deprisa. Thanks y un beso.
4 was just an example. Typically you’re cutting a lot more so I like to cut the larger number for the width of the strip so I can get more of the smaller dimension (in this case 3.5”) cuts when I sub cut it.
I understand, I do the same thing. But new quilters might not understand (or think of) the difference if you’re cutting a bunch or just a few. You might want to mention this, in your inimitable style! (Just MHO...)
I came looking for fabric cutting help, as a very frustrated lefty. Your two ruler idea, and showing a left handed perspective, have literally saved my quilt project. THANK YOU!!!
Glad to help! 🙏🏽❤️
Thank you for showing left handed cutting! I’m new to quilting and I was struggling to figure it out and my friends are all right handed!
Glad it was helpful!
This is the best video for cutting and sub cutting with the 2 ruler method. I can get more accurate cuts doing it this way by not moving fabric!!!! Thank you for showing this
Thank you for this tutorial. This is the best tutorial I have seen about cutting fabric as a lefty.
I love the 2 rulers and your “the fabric you’re keeping should be under” it saved me
Loved the two ruler trick, never thought of that before. Thank you 🙏
This left handed newbie really appreciates your explanation and demonstration. Thank you.
As a complete newbie I get paralyzed when it comes to cutting fabric just like the one you demonstrated for the rectangle. I second guess myself and freeze . Something so simple as

Thank you thank you thank you for showing how to do the 2 ruler method for lefties too!!! I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it!
Brilliant! I measure 10xs before I cut. This will give me so much more confidence. Thank you!
Thank you Vanessa for always looking out for us left handers!
Such a safe practice!
As a lefty I have problems with this. Thank you so much for this video. It cleared the confusion as to how to hold and cut my fabric. You are a great teacher. I appreciate you

Those tips are very helpful.
THANK you🦄
Do you ever use the lines on the cutting mat to measure? Is that not as accurate as the two-ruler method?
I'm so new to this & this most brilliant! Than you D

Hi Vanessa
Nice tips .
Already sign for the quilt club. Will it be possible to add all these free video in our quilt club so that we all have it directly in our account too?
Thanks
Yup! I'm doing that today. :) Thanks for stopping by and joining the club! Can't wait to see what you make from our upcoming projects!
Cutting with the left hand, are there left and right hand rotary cutters? does it make a difference? (I use both left and right hand)
You can change the blade to the opposite side, Olfa rotary cutters give this facility!
Hi I have a question for you. I was sewing with my Serger sewing machine and my needle came out. This happened to me twice. I put the needle back in and then the needle hit the needle plate. was wondering if you can help me figure out what I'm doing wrong.thank you

Will this way make sure we dont get an elbow in our strips?
What kind of starch do you use
Be sure to close the blade on your rotary cutter EVERY time you set it down for safety!!
Hola Vanessa!!. Me encantan tus videos. Pero me gustaría que hicieras más en español. Yo sé un poco inglés paro me cuesta mucho seguirte ya que hablas muy deprisa. Thanks y un beso.
👍🌹❤️👵🏻
Whet do you get such large cutting mats?
I put 24" x 36" mats together. I use these ones: amzn.to/2W27h8d Hope that helps!
Amazon, for one!
What is a "patrick" piece?
Patchwork piece
Hola, porque no volvió hacer vídeos en español 😥
It wasn't lined up at the bottom.
Hi what’s your canals an speaking Spanish
Is it just me or does she have a strange way of pronouncing the word "patchwork"? It sounds like "patrick"....
Hi Vanessa, since you only need 4 of the 3-1/2” x 5” rectangles, why wouldn’t you cut a 3-1/2” strip? Seems like you’re wasting fabric!
4 was just an example. Typically you’re cutting a lot more so I like to cut the larger number for the width of the strip so I can get more of the smaller dimension (in this case 3.5”) cuts when I sub cut it.
